Introduction: TAMA Martial Arts was founded by Master Taningco in 1976. TAMA offers a safe and challenging learning environment for you and your children. Empower yourself or your child though training in the martial arts at TAMA Martial Arts Center. It will help develop discipline, self-confidence, respect, patience, perseverance and honor. The TAMA curriculum focuses on developing an individual, giving each student the attention he/she needs to progress at his/her own level of understanding. It's a great outlet for energetic kids and a great program for children who are inactive and wish to become active while at the same time improving their life skills. Our program instills self-respect and discipline while enhancing concentration, dexterity and coordination. Our Kenpo karate program offers classes for all ages. Our Mighty Mites program is for children 4 to 6 years old. We have a children program for kids ages 7 to 12 years old and youth to adult program for children from 13 to adult. We do have several family classes that you and your child can participate in. We also offer several avenues of self-defense-oriented classes. These are the following: * Aikido and aiki-jujitsu classes teach the classical Japanese self-defense that uses throws, joint locks and blocks. * Krav maga encompasses all of the modern-day self-defense techniques from Europe and the Middle East. * Muay Thai kickboxing offers an aggressive defense as well as offense techniques. It is a great cardio class that will get you into shape in no time. We also have children classes for muay Thai. * Brazilian jujitsu classes are available for those who want to improve their ground techniques. It is similar to what is used in the MMA areas around the world. We have other adult classes available in the following areas: 1. Filipino Kali/JKD 2. Tai Chi Chuan (ancient yang style) 3. Tien Shan Pai Kung Fu 4. Kempo Karate Jiujitsu 5, Muay Thai Kickboxing 6. Brazilian Jiujitsu 7. ISD Program (similar to Krav Maga) 8. Aikijutsu

I started at TAMA a year and a half ago, and I absolutely love it. It is my home away from home. There were two things that impressed me most within my first week: 1. Everything was relaxed, yet professional. - I was very intimidated when I first thought about learning karate; I had visions of the large schools seen in movies like the Karate Kid. When I entered Tama I was immediately put at ease by the friendly personality of Sue, the front desk attendant. 2. By the second class, everyone knew my name. - The first week, all the instructors and many of my fellow students knew my name. I would walk in and people would say “Hi, Rachael!” And I would say “hi” and think to myself “whoever you are” because I had not learned all their names yet. ;) When it comes to the classes, we work hard and have fun. In the group class for ages 13+, there is plenty of variety. Boredom is never an issue, because we are always doing something different or doing a variation of a previous drill. Mighty Mites: I do not have any children in this class (I don’t have any children at all.), but I do volunteer as an aide to Master Taningco during this class. What impressed me most about the Mighty Mites class was how much fun Master Taningco has with his students. It is great to hear the student’s laughing at a joke Master Taningco makes and to see there enthusiasm as they enter the building. “Where is Master Taningco?” they often ask. There is no doubt that students admire and love Master Taningco, and Master Taningco feels the same towards them. For parents considering starting your Might Mite (4-6 year old child/children) at TAMA, I highly encourage it. Your child will be welcomed and put at ease immediately. Master Taningco: There is no doubt that Master Taningco possesses a wealth of knowledge when it comes to the world of martial arts. But what I most admire is his patience. Anyone who knows me knows that I ask questions; I will be the first to admit that I don’t understand something. No matter how many times I admit my confusion and ask for help, Master Taningco works with me until I understand the technique. Another mark of a good instructor aside (from patience) is one who knows how and when to praise. Master Taningco is observant of the progress his students makes and does not shy away of complimenting their improvements. A simple word of praise can go a long way. Often times learners (of any subject/discipline) can feel frustrated at what seems to be a lack of progress; we don’t often see the progress we make, and it can be discouraging. But, a simple word from an instructor can boost our confidence and let us know that while we may not see or feel the change, we are definitely making forward progress. In short, I recommend visiting and trying out TAMA. It is a friendly, family-oriented environment with programs for all ages. TAMA offers great instruction in a non-intimidating, always pleasant atmosphere.

When I first came to Dayton I was looking around for a martial arts school to continue my training. I spoke with one of the instructors on the phone and it sounded like a decent place so I joined a few classes. That was all it took for me to be a lifelong student of Sifu Taningco and TAMA. He is a patient teacher but presses his students to achieve all that they can. He is excellent with adults and children and has learned over the years exactly how to best reach all sorts of students. His knowledge is broad and deep as one would expect from a lifelong and full time practitioner of multiple martial arts disciplines. His enthusiasm is shared by the assistant instructors at the school so even on the days when he isn't teaching a particular class you can be assured that you'll receive competent and compassionate instruction. I highly recommend TAMA for anyone interested in learning a martial art whether you are a complete beginner or an experienced practitioner.

Master Manuel Taningco is an excellent instructor. He teaches each student at their current level of expertise while trying to help the student advance to higher levels. Master Taningco’s technique is: 1) to be gentle, but honest with the student; 2) to provide the reason why at the student current level of development; and 3) to help the student to enjoy the learning process.
