I needed someone to install kitchen backsplash that would look nice with my new granite countertops. Thumbtack sent me 3 professionals that they were recommending for the job. I went with Dave Peters of Diamond Contracting LLC based on many positive reviews and a Top Pro classification from Thumbtack. It turned out to be the perfect choice as Dave Peters is a perfectionist and works on your home as if it is his. He has a keen attention to detail and is excellent at suggesting ideas for the perfect materials and color matches. I love his installation of my backsplash using spacers to assure straight lines and working adeptly around the many outlets and light switches. The backsplash and grout go perfectly with my ceramic tile floor, wooden cupboards, and granite counters. He also installed some stone veneer panels to replace ugly fake wood paneling that is a 100% improvement – looks beautiful. I also needed some power washing on the roof and vinyl siding of my house where algae, mildew, mold or moss began growing in the moist shaded areas. Dave did an amazing job with this knowing the perfect cleaning additives for the power wash to kill and clean this nasty stuff. If it is quality workmanship that you are looking for, then you need to get ahold of Dave Peters at Diamond Contracting LLC to discuss your job and provide a free estimate.

Only took one day to complete the house and garage roof. There were several roofing nails exposed to elements on the shingles which could cause leakage when it rains. Ohio Roofing returned within a few days and fixed this problem. Overall very satisfied with their work and response to issues.

We had a great experience with Summit Building & Roofing. The Project Manager David worked with my insurance company to get my roof replaced when they initially only wanted to cover half of it. Great job!

Prime Construction and Restoration replaced my roof and gutters after a tree fell on it. They did the work 3 months sooner than other companies wanted to, and they handled all the insurance paperwork. He explained everything in Plain English and got permission from the insurance company to pay for all the damage not spotted by the insurance adjuster and/or to bring the roof up to date with newer building codes. The quality of the work was great and the service was excellent. I highly recommend Prime Construction and Restoration for your roofing needs.

Just hired for a new roof. Tim was professional and courteous, texted us an hour prior to our appointment time, and arrived on time. He had great recommendations while respecting our thoughts/wishes. Answered every one of our questions throughly as well as ensuring we understood every aspect of the work he would be providing. His quote was what we considered a fair price, and he provided multiple payment options. Copies of the job proposal/financial paperwork were in our hands before he left. Job is in scheduling/pending completion, more to follow...

Great company!!! Helped with every step along the way. Roof was completed in one day. I would give 5 stars but after the new roof was put on our sky lights leaked. I was able to send a message and someone was out bright and early the very next day to fix the problem!! I greatly appreciate that! Now I pray the fix works and there are no other leaks. I highly recommend this company!!

I had a seriously clogged downspout that caused sheets of water to pour from the gutter. Tom did a great job clearing that problem, clearing the tree needles from the roof that would have returned the problem, and cleaning all the other gutters and down spouts. I particularly like his method which uses a hose to ensure that the gutters are clean and running well.

I am very happy with the work Hi-5 Roofing did on my roof. From the estimate to the final walk through after the job was complete Fernando (regional manager) was professional, knowledgeable, and friendly. When he gave me the estimate he worked with me and offered me different options that fit my budget. When I decided to hire him he made sure he got all the proper city permits and any obstruction near my roof such as power lines were taking care of. The materials and crew arrived on the day scheduled and finished the same day. Since I was at work for most of the day Fernando kept me informed of the progress. When they were done my roof looked fantastic! The area around my house and in my garage was cleaned up nicely. Overall I'm a happy customer.

Brad and Ethan were punctual, friendly and professional. They got the work done quickly and the price seemed quite reasonable. I can’t comment on the actual quality of work because I wasn’t up on the roof with them. But if the gutters are clean and the leaks are fixed I’m pleased. I guess I will know for sure the next time it rains! My impression at this point is that I would definitely hire ProWorx again.

I had a rental unit I was selling that had a great deal of stains on the roof shingles. The roof cleaner I bought at Home Depot did not put a dent in the stains. I found Forza on the internet. Dwayne removed all of the stains which definitely contributed to the curb appeal of the house.

Mr Favret responded to my request immediately and I was able to get a hold of him for a deck inspection and recommendation in a reasonable time. He could have up-sold installation of deck flashing on the ledger board, but recognized that siding was in place as well as wall flashing making the deck flashing redundant and unnecessary. He saved me time and money. I highly recommend him.

We recently just got our entire house done by Absolute Restorations and it was a great experience!! We had hail damage and originally got 1200 from insurance. After talking with Jason, he worked with the insurance company to get us a brand new SLATE roof, all NEW siding including the detached garage, all new gutters, shutters, and a new vinayl inner porch ceiling. He worked with insurance 100% and we as the homeowner had to do very little work to get it all approved. He was great at staying in touch and keeping us up to date on what was happening. The roofers and siders have been amazing. They clean up each night and are super friendly! I would recommend Absolute Restorations to anyone!! We have a brand new beautiful house and we owe all of work to this amazing company!! -Korie

Dennis and his team were beyond professional and efficient with the job at hand. Though a huge part of the work they did was roofing, it was no easy task as they were salvaging what was left of my family's home after a somewhat devastating fire. After dealing with such a family tragedy and the emotional turmoil that goes along with losing so many things a family acquires over time, and losing a sense of security you lose when dealing with such an incident, the last thing you want to deal with is contractors and workmen who don't respect your loss and your space. Dennis and his team were VERY sympathetic to what we were going through as a family. Thy worked very hard to complete the job in a very efficient way and went above and beyond by actually handling several other repairs that were not a part of the scope of work, without ever saying a word about it, or billing for it...just simply did it, because they knew we needed it done and didn't want us to have to deal with another decision or problem after what we had been through. I HIGHLY recommend this company and their professional and expert services!! Gill Thompson

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why do I need to clean my roof?

Over time, algae, moss, lichen, dirt and even salt (if you’re near the ocean) can build up on your roof. These buildups can affect the look and function of your roof unless removed. The buildup of organic materials such as moss on a shingle roof can prevent water from sloughing off as it normally would. Trapped water can rot the roof or cause early deterioration of your shingles. Even if you don’t have a shingle roof, moss and lichen absorb water, and that wet material adds weight and stress to your roof — as well as providing a home for insects and other pests, and collecting dirt. For reflective, cool roofs that redirect heat away from the home, algae and moss growths can hamper their ability to deflect the sun, which can affect utility bills. Visually, moss, dirt and algae growths on a roof can have a negative effect on perceived home value and curb appeal. For example, black algae streaks on your roof may cause a potential homebuyer to assume that the roof might need repair or replacement, when it only needs to be cleaned.

Can a roof be cleaned?

Yes roofs can be cleaned, and yes, it’s a real thing. Roof cleaning may actually be a wise investment to prolong the life of your roof. Overgrowth of moss, grime, lichen or algae can all shorten the life of your roof. If you have black streaks growing on your roof, they are likely caused by gloeocapsa magma algae spores that have landed on your roof and taken up residence. Once the algae has grown into streaks, the organism has usually been growing for several months and it’s high time to have it removed. If you live in a rainy part of the country, such as the Pacific Northwest, there’s a good chance you’ll find moss growing on your roof at some point. The northern part of your roof, as well as any parts that remain shaded all day, will provide a wet, cool haven for moss to flourish. Unfortunately this water-absorbing moss can damage your shingle roof, leading to rot if not removed. Beyond roof health and function, a clean roof can boost your curb appeal and potentially boost your home’s resale value. The national average for roof cleaning costs ranges between $270 and $350, although prices can be higher depending on how large your roof is, how steep your roof is, and what type of cleaning is necessary. Typically pros use either a pressure wash or chemical wash (made with a concentrated bleach solution) to remove algae, lichen, moss and dirt.

What chemicals are used to clean roofs?

Roof cleaning is done to remove moss, lichen, algae, and buildup of other grime and dirt. There are several methods for roof cleaning, which can include a chemical soft wash, pressure washing, low-pressure washing and hand washing. When a chemical soft wash is used, a bleach mixture is sprayed onto the roof. The bleach-based solution is absorbed by the algae or moss, which dies from exposure to the chemical. The roof is then sprayed with a low-pressure rinse of water, which loosens the now-dead material, allowing it to slide off the roof.

For homeowners, the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association recommends a mixture of 50 percent laundry-strength liquid chlorine bleach and 50 percent water. Professional roof cleaning companies will use an industrial mixture that is still safe but may be more effective in eliminating algae and moss growths. Asphalt shingle roofs are the most common type of roof, but each roofing material will have its own cleaning needs, so it’s best to consult with your roofing pro before diving in. Don’t do it yourself unless you can safely navigate your roof, the chemicals and a sprayer system. When in doubt, leave it to the pros.

What is a standing seam metal roof?

A standing seam metal roof may be a strong, durable, safe choice when you’re considering metal roofing installation options. A standing seam refers to the raised seam where the sheet metal roofing panels join. Traditionally, shingles and roof panels lie flush to the roof, making them more prone to rust or penetration by water at their seams. In a standing seam metal roof, the raised (or standing) seams run vertically from the roof ridge to the eaves, with no horizontal seams. In addition, the fasteners joining the metal panels together are concealed, providing even fewer opportunities for water or moisture to build up. The cost to install a standing seam metal roof will depend on the type of metal you select, the size of your roof, and the cost of roofing labor in your region. Materials will play a major role in your metal roofing installation costs. If you select standard galvanized steel, the cost per square (100 square feet) might be in the $150-$300 range, while a high-end choice such as copper or zinc could be between $1,000 and $1,500 per square. Here is one example of cost:

  • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.

Can a metal roof be installed over shingles?

Metal roofs are durable, environmentally friendly, safe and budget-friendly. If you’re considering an update, metal roofing installation doesn’t have to mean completely removing your old roof. In many cases, metal roofing can be installed over your existing shingles. Research building codes in your state, as many require that after two roofs have been installed, all roofing materials must be completely removed before a third roof can be put on. This protects your home’s structural integrity and your family’s safety. Carefully read contractor reviews and choose someone with extensive experience with metal roofing installation. One concern when installing metal over shingles is that over time, condensation can build on the shingles and cause the metal to rust. This will lead to rust around the panels, making them more likely to come loose in a storm. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000. The wide price range represents different roof sizes, different types of metal, and the cost of labor in different parts of the country — and can also include the cost of removing an old shingle roof prior to installing the metal. As a line item, the average cost of removing an old roof to prepare for installing a new roof, plus adding new roof decking, costs on average about $45-$75 per square (the pro roofer’s term for 100 square feet), depending on the pitch of the roof. Always make sure you have a clearly written contract and a warranty on both the labor and the metal.
