We hired Steve to install a ventilation fan in our bathroom. The existing fan was not vented to the outside so it sucked moist air straight into a space in the wall. Steve came out to take a look and discovered we could install a fan in the ceiling so I could get one with a light that I really wanted. Steve also installed a new switch for the new light/fan and gave me two new outlets! My bathroom only had 1 in the vanity, so this was a BIG DEAL for me! Steve patched up all the holes from the wiring work and also the big hole from the old fan that was in the wall and it looks great, we can't wait to paint! The job was finished in a day and a half, quicker than we initially expected and he left our bathroom cleaner than when he started. I definitely recommend Steve for any work you need help with around the home, we will certainly be calling him again in the future. Thanks, Steve!

I needed wire added to my split rail fence for my dogs. Brandon found the right product and did a great job. I later asked him to add another gate and he installed it in a day.

I hired Greg with “If I had a Hammer” back in November 2016 for a complete bathroom remodel, new siding, new electrical and plumbing and several other renovation needs for a bank owned home I purchased. I tried to get multiple bids from different contractors that specialized in different work that was required but Greg was the only contractor that assured me his company could handle all of my project needs in one bid. I had a strict budget and only expected to get the essentials handled because I knew the cost of each project. Not only did Greg go above and beyond on the bathroom remodel but he did so many extra tasks around the home that completely brought my house together. He literally treated my home as if it was his (a lot of contractors will say they will do this but HE actually did). I have to tell this one example because I think it says so much about what kind of contractor & person he is. I had to have a mold remediation specialist come in for mold in my basement/garage (the only other contractor that I used) and I was unable to oversee their work due to other obligations. Greg came to the house to check on the job and saw that they were doing an extremely poor job. He took pictures of their work and sent it to me. This was a huge deal because I would never have second guessed the remediation myself since I was unfamiliar with it. I asked them to come back and asked Greg if he would oversee it for me. My basement is beautiful and entirely clear of mold because of his efforts. I highly recommend “If I had a Hammer” for all of your project needs. Greg himself is a man of few words lol so don’t let that throw you off, BUT I can promise you he is trustworthy, hardworking and genuinely loves to doing the work that he does – which is a rarity. You will NOT regret hiring him.

Had Ryan wire a fan on my screened in porch. Was impressed with work. All finished work done properly. He also layed 130 square foot tile in kitchen, dining area & bathroom. I love my new floor. It looks fantastic. Had to level floor & put in new subfloor first. Worked until job was completed. He can do almost any home improvement. I will definitely have him come back to do any additional work on my home.

Hired Eco Construction Services LLC to install a bi-fold door at an occupied rental property. He was punctual. The job required shortening some 2X4s installed by a previous tenant as coat hooks and getting a new door track from Home Depot.I would hire again.

I've used him for so many jobs... Update entire home after destructive tenants.... Tear up and pull out old carpeting, replacing all blinds for every window, install dishwasher, washer and dryer, garbage disposal, level several separate room floors in preparation for tile work (this made the biggest difference in my home)....He is excellent at shaping the tile to the right shape and size, back splashes, replaced hot water tank. Before I go on further I need to go back and explain that in 3 separate rooms that had to be leveled and tiled, he had to reinsert new floorboards and this was true in 2 other small areas where the floor would be layed with new carpet. He has inserted new security cameras for my peace of mind, ran wiring to my garage and I'm sure I could go on and on. One of the things I appreciated the most is that he always cleans up as he goes. Another is his pricing. And quality is always included in the value! He's got an energetic personality that can always pull a smile from a person who is having a bad day! I keep his number handy and once you use him, you will too!

I met Kim and Joe when we bought a new house. I believe the first time she came over was in January or February of 2015. She came in, looked at everything that needed to be done, took meticulous notes, made a list, and offered to clean light fixtures while she was making changes and make them look good and new. Being overwhelmed with work, family, etc., this was a welcome offer! Her list was more comprehensive than we could have ever imagined! She has an amazing eye for detail, problem solves, and finds the most economical solution. Kim is organized and keeps a running list of things that have to get done with every client! She's simply amazing! Joe is awesome at getting things done on the list! He's handy, solves problems, and is a great complement to Kim. They both have done numerous projects for us from changing out light fixtures, to attaching a chandelier lift, built a vent for a de-humidifier, installed hardwood floors, hung pictures - the list goes on and on. There isn't much these guys can't do!!! If you've got a project, ask them - they likely can do it with all their construction background! Thanks Kim and Joe for making our house so nice to live in!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much is a redwood fence per foot?

A redwood fence is a long-lasting home investment that can add beauty and major curb appeal to your home. Redwood fence installation costs are higher than those for pressure-treated pine or cedar, due to the relative scarcity of the wood. Pricing can vary for redwood fence installation costs based on regional labor rates, current prices of redwood planks, the height and linear feet of the fence, and any custom designs or features. Redwood fences, in addition to being beautiful, are naturally more resistant against bugs and rot than less hardy or dense woods. Redwood fences also generally fare well in wet or humid climates due to their natural oils — which also make them easier to maintain. Materials costs per linear foot for redwood planks can range anywhere from $6 to $20 or more, depending on grade, quality and height.

How much does it cost to put up a chain-link fence?

Chain-link fence is one of the most affordable options for adding safety and value to your home or business. The national average chain-link fence installation cost is $2,750. Chain-link fences are relatively simple for the pros to install; a fence of less than 150 linear feet can often be put up in under one day. A good rule of thumb is to add an additional workday for each additional 100 linear feet of fence to be installed.

Chain-link fence installation costs are affected by the fluctuating cost of steel, regional labor rates, the height of fence you select, and the features you select, such as a powder-coated finish. The industry standard is galvanized steel, which is rust- and corrosion-resistant. Galvanized chain-link fence installation cost, including labor and materials, is typically $12 per linear foot. For a more contemporary and elegant option, black powder-coated galvanized chain-link fence might cost approximately $15 per linear foot on average, including materials and labor. For industrial sites or businesses, 10-foot-high galvanized chain-link fences may provide additional security, but also have an added cost. A 10-foot-high chain-link fence could cost $17-$18 per linear foot, including labor and materials.

How much does it cost to install a vinyl fence?

A new fence can mean added home value, increased curb appeal, and improved home security. The national average vinyl fence installation cost is $4,600. Vinyl fences have a number of appealing qualities such as their durability, their lasting good looks (they don’t weather like wood does), their versatility, and the fact that they require little to no maintenance such as staining. Fencing companies typically charge per linear foot for vinyl fence installation. They calculate their estimates based on materials to be used, height of fence, linear feet of the proposed fence, and the accessibility of the terrain. If the workers need to level the land before work begins, your vinyl fence installation costs will probably increase. Vinyl fences are typically more expensive than wood or chain-link. For example, one company might charge $19-$22 per linear foot for a basic 6-foot vinyl privacy fence. Another company might charge $25-$35 per linear foot for standard vinyl fencing, while decorative fencing with custom detail could increase that cost to $50 per linear foot. For a 6-foot-high white vinyl privacy fence with two walk-through gates (plus demolition and disposal of the old fence), the cost of the total project could run $8,000. A 4-foot-high, 36-linear-foot white picket vinyl fence with one gate could cost $2,600.

How much does it cost to install a wood fence?

Help define your property line, protect your home and yard, and boost your curb appeal with a new wood fence. The national average for wood fence installation cost is $3,250. Wood fence installation costs will vary based on your geographic location, the type of wood you select, the height and style of wood fence you desire, and the condition of your property. Pressure-treated pine is a common and attractive choice that is usually resilient against rot and bugs. Cedar is another budget-friendly option that, although more expensive than pressure-treated pine, can be more affordable than redwood or teak. A wood fence requires maintenance to ensure its long-term health and beauty, so keep future staining and painting costs in mind when you’re calculating fence installation costs. Here are some examples of how height and material affect the approximate cost of wood fences:

  • 6-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence: $15-$17 per linear foot.
  • 4-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence: $13-$20 per linear foot.
  • Cedar fence: $18-$25 per linear foot.
  • 6-foot-high, double-sided (meaning both sides are uniform), pressure-treated pine fence with 6x6 posts: $25 per linear foot.
  • 12-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence with custom detailing: $75 per linear foot.
  • 6-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence with a custom lattice top: $30-$50 per linear foot.

How much does it cost to install a fence gate?

Adding a gate to your fence can be a practical way to provide access to a yard, work area or outdoor living space while ensuring safety and privacy. Gate installation costs will vary based on the gate material you select, the size of your gate, whether you install a fence at the same time, and any special features you’d like to add. Standard opening size for a single-wide gate is 4 feet; a double-wide gate is 8 feet. A small gate may be for decoration; a double-wide gate can be mounted on a rolling caster system to allow access for cars or wide loads. Here are some examples of average fence gate installation costs:

  • 4-foot, single-swing chain-link gate: $100 for materials and installation costs.
  • 28-foot wheeled chain-link gate on a caster system: $800-$1,000 for materials and installation costs.
  • 4-foot, single-swing wood gate: $75.
  • 8-foot double-wide wood gate: $150.
  • 4-foot white vinyl walk-through gate: $300–$400 for materials and installation costs.
  • 8-foot, double-wide white vinyl gate: about $800 for materials and installation costs.
  • White vinyl gate fence more than 8 feet wide: $1,200-$1,500 for materials and installation.
  • Arched black powder-coated aluminum pool gates: $175-$200 per gate.
