ACI removed a deteriorating porch and replaced it. They were great to work with because after removing the old porch, the wood on the house did not meet inspection so another unexpected contractor had to be called in. ACI was able to secure another contractor and keep the project moving.

I found Tony through internet search. He was very quick to respond and set up a time to quote the job. From quote to job completion was outstanding. Tony and his assistant were timely, courteous, professional and excellent at home remodel. I knew I made the right choice once I saw the time and care they put into laying out step mats, plastic sheeting, etc...so they wouldn't track anything through my house. They repaired/patched drywall and painted both my bathrooms. They installed a vanity and faucet and added backsplash to both bathrooms. They did this in a little over a day and at a great price. I took numerous business cards from them to pass along to my neighbors/friends because I was so pleased with their work. I will most definitely use them on future projects.

After having two contractors mess up the foundation and framing (by not following the permitted plans) of my new room addition, I hired Blair’s. Shawn, Ty and Jake came in and fixed the foundation walls and brought the framing up to code in order to pass inspection. They came in and literally saved the day. Everyday they come on time and have followed the plans as they were intended. They have been upfront with me on costs and have worked hard to keep me up to speed throughout the process. I highly recommend these guys for big and small projects.

I requested Drywall estimate for a ceiling removal in the kitchen (old drop ceiling with the plastic sheets for Florescent lighting ) . Kelsha responded quickly and personnaly showed up to introduce himself. I quickly realized Kelsha was more than just drywall contractor. His work and helper were there when they said and performed perfect in removal of many parts of the home I was remodeling. We did total bathroom remodel as well as walls removed throughout the home. They cleaned up everyday they were on the job and never had to question anything. Kelsha was so talented in Finished Trim, Drywall, and general construction all the stress of the multiple projects in the home Kelsha performed always in a professional way. Always was the early man on the job and kept in touch thruout with other trades to cordinate the work load . Kelsha would constantly call to inform me of progress and what I needed to purchase to keep the flow moving forward. I forgot to mention his ability in framing walls whenever needed which I found myself needing during the remodel. We added and removed multiple walls and Kelsha finish work made them all look as if they never happened. I strongly recommend Kelsha Speedlimit Construction for all your drywall , framing and finish Carpentry jobs. Small or large you will be happy with Kelsha on the job.

They came in and fixed the damage caused by another contractor I had hired, not through Thumbtack. They were timely and were very cautious of my funds. They attempted to reuse as much as possible so that I didn’t have to buy all new material again. They painted, took out and replaced vinyl floors, and fixed anything I needed. They are not fast, but are very efficient, detailed, and quality oriented. I will use Mid Ohio Contracting for all of my house repair and update needs in the future.

Craig was on time for our 9 am appointment. He quickly diagnosed the leak I had around my window as a crack in the stucco. He caulked it and as a preventive measure the entire window frame. His price was reasonable and he gave me a quote on another job I asked him about. I recommend Craig.

Very timely reply to my search. Owner and his crew captain came to look over the job for true estimate, including a better plan/layout to my idea (they're the professionals). Every step was clearly explained. Work began that night (or next day?). Crew captain explained who would be coming with a brief description of each employee. Owner and crew captain were either here throughout the process or readily available. Communication was excellent! Workers were kind and respectful. Entire staff was accommodating. Work began late morning and they stayed on the job until it was finished (late into the evening, they had to be starving!) which suited my schedule perfectly. My only dissatisfaction (I am the ultimate perfectionist, and the daughter/sister of finish builders) is the craftmanship was not as precise as I would have liked. Respectfully submitted.

After another contractor failed to show up to work on my drive, porch, & patio I found Thumbtack, and 5 Star Concrete was quick to respond to my project request. Joe came out and gave a fair estimate and we agreed to go forward. 5 Star delivered from tear out to finishing details. We now have a new front porch with walkway, driveway and a patio for some outdoor living/entertaining space. The crew worked well together and although I tend to be paranoid regarding contractors, I was very impressed and feel very good about the entire experience. Thanks, Joe and the 5 Star employees for a job well done.

Here we found Matt, someone who has patience with great work attitude, reliable. We are very pleased with the result of the excellent job Matt did for us. We will definitely contact him again for our next project. You will not go wrong with Matt.

We hired NRE to paint a 2 bedroom condo for resale. The job was completed within 6 days. The price was lower than most other contractors and the work was fine. On the day we met with him to do an onsite estimate, he said he thought he could have the estimate to us later that day. He ended up not responding that day/night but when we reached out to him the following day, he apologized and gave us the quote. No big deal! He told us the amount/types of paint he needed and we provided those so he could begin the project. He expected to complete the project by Friday, but we were at the property Friday and it was not complete and he was not there. Again...no big deal as it was clearly near completion. However, we expected it probably wouldn’t be done until the following business day (Monday). We were not concerned at all! However, the job was apparently completed over the weekend because we were emailed an invoice on a Sunday evening (April 22, 2018 at 4:30pm). Since we had not expected the invoice until Monday, we simply planned to pay it Monday evening. Before we had a chance, he had emailed us back to threaten a lien on the property. While we totally respect that NRE deserves to be paid promptly, it did seen very heavy handed after we had been relaxed about other minor timeline discrepancies. So for that we would rate NRE 4 stars instead of 5.

I had a roof leak that they responded to very quickly. This led to them putting on a whole new roof! They didn’t charge me for repairs at all, did an amazing job, and did the roof in one day! They cleaned up well after and they were very professional. They’re a great company to work with, and they made the stressful process very easy for me!!! My roof looks great and I would definitely recommend them to anybody!

Kyle was the general contractor for our home remodel and addition. We've gone from being a 1700ish sqft home to nearly 2700 sqft, each room updated to our standards. Kyle was here everyday, working alongside with hired out sub-contractors or taking on an entire job task by himself - something you don't necessarily see with most general contractors. There is no job that he cannot do and because of that, I can honestly say that thanks to Kyle, our house is now a home.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

  • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
  • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
  • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
  • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
