Mike was on time and very professional. He installed three ceiling fans. These ceiling fans were a little out of the ordinary and heavy, one weighed 25lbs. He did a great job! I would most definitely hire him again to work in my home.

Blaise was excited for the opportunity to be creative in the design of my kitchen. I loved his work so much: attention to detail, artistic/modern features, and reasonable pricing all within a timely manner. He finished the job faster than anticipated and I was extremely impressed. Therefore, I let him take on the unfinished remodeling of both my den and media room-- projects I have put off for years. With considerable expertise and well-timed planning, he and his team had the projects completed before my long awaited family reunion. Needless to say, my family and friends could not stop admiring the work that had been done. “Beautiful” was the most word they used when describing my renovations. I would indorse him to anyone.

Jeremy was able to come to my home today and do the facia board repair on my garage which was damaged in a wind storm. He was here when he said he would be here and did an exceptional job. I would use him for other carpenter work and will recommend him to friends and family.

Kara listened carefully to our ideas about our decorating project in our living room and sunroom and adding furnishings to several additional rooms. She asked insightful questions so we could clarify our thoughts. She offered creative ideas and promptly researched all aspects of our project. She kept us up to date on plans, expected completion dates and delivery dates for ordered items. She was clear about costs and stayed within budget. If we exceeded our budget, it was because we decided to upgrade to higher quality fabrics, rugs and/or furnishings. Kara was always professional and demonstrated a sincere interest in helping us achieving a beautiful, comfortable environment. When we finished and I had guests, I loved hearing them say “Wow, this is beautiful!” Kara has my highest recommendation for your project

I am truly pleased with my kitchen, bathroom and laundry remodel – the results exceed my dreams. I walk into the spaces weeks later and still cannot believe they are mine. As a recent first time visitor to my home walked from the living room to the dining room, he asked if I minded if he looked into the kitchen. As he looked around, he said – “this is spectacular.” It is a pleasure to share my experience with Ruthann Capozzi and the Capozzi Design Group. I met Ruthann when she presented a Kitchen Remodeling Workshop as I prepared for my remodel. I was impressed from the start with her overall knowledge and ability to communicate clearly in responding to questions. Later, I found the whole team to be equally professional and focused on meeting my interests. Ruthann provided guidance as I made choices, although at no time did I feel pressured to force her views when we differed. Throughout the project Ruthann and her staff maintained communication with me as well as with the various trades people to keep the project on track. I knew when workers would be in my home, what would be occurring, and was consulted when decisions needed to be made on placement of outlets, handles, etc. Throughout the project, workers cleaned all areas at the end of each day, informed me when they would be returning, and what if any restrictions there were on the work in process. All workers were polite, introduced themselves when they arrived, and showed respect for me and my things. When there were delays in availability of key trades people, Capozzi staff were able to explain changes in the sequencing of work and step in to work on other aspects of the project to minimize delay. All three projects were being completed simultaneously so when there was a delay in one area, the team was often able to work in the other areas. Clearly I am well satisfied with the professionalism of Capozzi Design and would (and have) recommend them to anyone interested in a kitchen or bathroom remodel.

I put my house on the market in February. With 2 kids under 2 my house was a cluttered nightmare. Nicole came in and quickly got the house decluttered and staged for the sale. I'm convinced she's the reason my house sold in 12 hours! We've bought a new, much bigger house, and I've already contracted her to help me stage my beautiful new home. Loved working with her and I can't wait to work with her again!

Ms. Platt is the epitome of professionalism and expertise. She came to my house and really listened to my needs. She reviewed the look of my house as a whole unit to see how it all fit together. Her knowledge of color, fabrics, layout, etc. helped transform my home into the vision of my dreams. She was very gracious and extremely responsive. I plan to use Ms. Platt this coming winter to complete my house. She is one of the most professional artists I know with my 30 years of business experience. Her work ethic and results are outstanding.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.
