Jim did an excellent job installing our new kitchen faucet, which required an additional hole to be drilled in our counter top. He was very responsive in our communications leading up to the job. We would definitely recommend his services!

What we thought was a simple clogged drain turned out to be a blocked vent as well. Chuck was prompt, friendly, and considerate. He worked very hard for nearly 2 hours to get the kitchen sink draining properly. Our plumbing was being difficult, but in the end, Chuck won the battle! He did a great job, and despite it being such a tough job, he did not over charge us. I highly recommend Chuck's Service Plumbing. He will be the first one we call for future plumbing jobs.

I requested Drywall estimate for a ceiling removal in the kitchen (old drop ceiling with the plastic sheets for Florescent lighting ) . Kelsha responded quickly and personnaly showed up to introduce himself. I quickly realized Kelsha was more than just drywall contractor. His work and helper were there when they said and performed perfect in removal of many parts of the home I was remodeling. We did total bathroom remodel as well as walls removed throughout the home. They cleaned up everyday they were on the job and never had to question anything. Kelsha was so talented in Finished Trim, Drywall, and general construction all the stress of the multiple projects in the home Kelsha performed always in a professional way. Always was the early man on the job and kept in touch thruout with other trades to cordinate the work load . Kelsha would constantly call to inform me of progress and what I needed to purchase to keep the flow moving forward. I forgot to mention his ability in framing walls whenever needed which I found myself needing during the remodel. We added and removed multiple walls and Kelsha finish work made them all look as if they never happened. I strongly recommend Kelsha Speedlimit Construction for all your drywall , framing and finish Carpentry jobs. Small or large you will be happy with Kelsha on the job.

I am a single female on a tight budget who knows very little about home repairs/remodeling. I am wary of being "taken" due to this, and thus have put off my kitchen "redo" for several years. Paul and his assistant, his granddaughter, have been outstanding. They have been punctual, communicative, offered suggestions, and come in under budget. They have also been quite patient when I have added a couple of things or changed course mid-way (glad they aren't reviewing me as a customer :). To top if off, they are positive and enjoyable to be around. My refaced cabinets look great and my backsplash and new range hood go in next week. I can't wait to see the final results!

I can not say enough wonderful things about working with Amy! I moved into an older 5000 square foot home in Lewis Center that needed completely remodeled and she helped with every detail to help me and my family create our dream home! Together we decided on a timeless country estate theme. We started by choosing all of the paint colors for each room and light fixtures from chandeliers, sconces, ceiling fans and canned lighting. She shopped with me at multiple stores for furniture, countertops, backsplash, flooring, and carpet. She worked around my schedule to meet with me many times and provided me with multiple options for rugs, furniture, lamps, mirrors, art, bedding, buffets, tables. I made all the large purchases and she personally shopped for the smaller Knickknacks and Decor to include throw pillows, items for my built in book shelves, centerpieces, etc. She is also an artist and did a beautiful had painting in our powder room to really give it that one of a kind feel. My husband and I could not be happier! She is so personable and friendly. When meeting with designers before we decided to move forward with her I liked that she met with me free of charge, and provided base pricing for each room, rather than an hourly rate like many other designers. She is passionate about her work and puts in the time and effort to make sure you are in love with all of the selections. She made the process easy, fun, and affordable. I would recommend her to anyone who wants some assistance in a sprucing up a room or in my case an entire home. Anyone who has seen my home is so impressed with what she has done and I have given her contact to many people that I know personally. She really is the best!!

I can't recommend Mid Ohio Contracting enough! They were able to repair some tile work in my kitchen and master shower and their work seamlessly flowed to the rest of the tile in the area. They were able to schedule me within a week of coming out for the initial consult. The value was incredible and was thousands of dollars less than the other quote i received. I will certainly call Mid Ohio Contracting in the future for any home repairs!

Wow! What a huge difference Lisi made to our home! Every area she touched is now transformed into a space that’s used more effectively and lived in more comfortably. Lisi efficiently worked through organizing children’s closets, basement crawl spaces, seasonal decorative items, linen closets, the kitchen pantry, family memorabilia and other areas that needed attention. Her expertise and partnership is invaluable in helping identify what can be donated, sold, thrown away or kept in an organized fashion. She respectfully suggested ways to organize our belongings in a way that makes sense. We can’t thank her enough for her dedicated hard work in getting a difficult task accomplished with thoughtfulness and care. I highly recommend her services to anyone who is ready to make their home clean, organized and simplified.

Kelli brings a smart look and feel to her work. In my case, she provided the guidance and assistance I needed to clean up my home and impart some order and style to a plain (and admittedly messy) living space. She is conscientious and professional, and will help apply some laser-like focus where needed!

Luke Blazek extensively remodeled my badly designed master bathroom and out of date kitchen! My bathroom tub literally sat in my bedroom. Luke built a separate room for my floor to ceiling glassed in shower and new cabinets and a separate water closet for my toilet. He also built a nice sized walk in closet. I can't begin to tell you how happy I was with the end result. It far exceeded my expectations! Luke is an excellent carpenter. He does great quality of work. It is never done half way. He has great organizational skills. He started and finished the job and never left me in mess for weeks. He also remodeled my upstairs bath at the same time as well. Luke remodeled my out of date kitchen. He designed a lovely functional kitchen. It is easy to work in as well as entertain. I had awful syphots (sp) that needed to be replaced. The entire wiring of the house was in these syphots. I also had duct work issues. Luke easily took care of both of those problems without tearing up my entire house. I have beautiful kitchen that I love to spend time in every day because Luke did a lovely job of renovating a 1980's kitchen. Over the years I've had lots of work done on many of my houses. Luke is only person that I have had come back and work on my house. I trust Lukes' judgement as well as his strong work ethic. Luke does great work!

My husband and I bought a new house in October 2015 and inherited very ugly and worn hardwood floors - over 1,500 sq.ft.! Scott and his crew came to the rescue and went above and beyond our expectations - the floors look stunning! I have to say that Scott has excellent customer service and is eager to please! No doubt that you should hire him for your next job!

We had DS redo our unfinished half basement space. It was a particularly difficult space to do as the furnace, hot water heater, craw space and storage shelves needed enclosed but maintain full access. The ceiling required 2 soffits in order to maintain height and one wall an angle to save floor space. It was their design ideas that we liked over their competiters right away and the workmanship was spot on.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.
