Becoming a bit stressed with planning my parent's 50th anniversary party, I looked for caterers. I received 4 replies and A Catered Affair was the only one offering variety of foods and a reasonable cost! Greg was extremely easy and fantastic to work with...he and his staff were friendly, professional, and delivered what they committed to. I received rave reviews on the food from those attending the party...I would definitely recommend them and use them again for future events! Thank you, Greg and John, for making my parents very important milestone so special...and for making my dad's favorite dessert...pineapple upside cake!

Prestige Catering catered a dinner event for about 70 people. I ordered chicken marsala, specifying "low salt" and it was excellent. Many people complimented the chicken. The vegetables were fresh and flavorful and the desserts were excellent -- not one left! Salad was fresh. I was very happy with the food and appreciated the pleasant and helpful staff sent to help us on the night of our party.

Chuck and his staff at A Catered Affair are simply the best! Great prices, beautiful presentation. Their menu is vast, and they are able to accommodate dietary restrictions as well. I have used their services over the years for small and large cocktail parties, charity dinners, my family Christmas Eve party, my niece's bat mitzvah, open houses, business lunches, retirement party, and more. I even chose my venue for my wedding because I was able to use A Catered Affair there! I had seen some hors d'oeuvres in a wedding magazine, and they were able to duplicate them perfectly for my wedding reception. And their prices are so reasonable!

Maria catered a holiday dinner party for 30 people at my home. We had extra last minute guests and she accommodated everyone. She worked hard to ensure we were within budget and accommodated changes I requested. The food was absolutely delicious - best Tres Leches cake I've ever had. Everyone raved over the food. Both Penny and Brian were very pleasant, helpful and efficient in setting up, serving guests and cleaning up. Couldn't have asked for a better experience.

I had The Happy Chefs handle a birthday celebration dinner party for 10. Chef Jay and his crew did a top-notch job. Chef Jay was great at communicating before the event. At the event the food and the service were tremendous. The guests all raved about the food and clearly had a memorable evening. There were a number of courses/interaction points and their professionalism, personal interaction, flexibility and politeness were absolutely first class. In short, it was a spectacular event and I recommend The Happy Chefs without hesitation.

We used Bailey Family Catering for an outdoor company picnic for around 200 guests. We wanted traditional picnic fare (burgers/brats) with onsite grilling. We selected Bailey for their competitive price and because their menu offered just a little more pizzazz to the typical picnic food than the other caterers that we considered. Bailey did a fantastic job. They encountered a few obstacles at the event, like getting their truck stuck in the mud and a troublesome grill. But they really overcame and delivered. Most guests weren't even aware there was an issue. I just heard about how great the food was. Deanna was fabulous to work with. She was very responsive and accommodating. We will definitely be hiring Bailey for our company picnic next year.

We had an morning event hosted by another company. Sabrina was great and adjusted to the time limits and various challenges of the morning. She was incredibly friendly, detailed and made the whole process a breeze! I sincerely appreciated her arranging to come back to clean up even though it was not a full service catering event. The food was delicious and presented nicely. Happy to support a local business and will definitely keep her in mind for our next catered event.

Mikes Somkehouse BBQ catered our wedding gathering (post wedding) and it was more than amazing costumer service. They arrived on time, with everything we requested for, and the catering was exactly what we ask for. The BBQ was awesome, along with the sides. Plenty of food for everyone. For our next large gathering I would definitely consider this service.

Cuisine East West catered a dinner party at my home, and the food was plentiful and of excellent quality. Guests asked me for the name of the caterer, and were excited to take home some of the leftovers! Charlie worked with me to customize an elegant menu, and all the dishes were exactly as requested. Will definitely look forward to working with Cuisine East West in the future.

Nicole provided catering services for my daughters 16th birthday party her food was the talk of the party. I don't know Nicole, but I heard of about her food through word of mouth via a co-worker. Her Macaroni and Cheese, Cheese Ball, and Baked Pasta are to die for. All of her dishes are very seasoned compared to my cooking. She's a very well managed and polite young lady. I will most definitely be using her services again this Summer for our family reunion.

Smoker EZ BBQ catered my wedding on May 16th 2015. We had about 150 people attending the wedding, and through multiple emails / phone calls with Craig, we got an estimate on how much food we would need. The day of the wedding they showed up on time, prompt, with enough people to serve the food and keep the line moving. The food was delicious as it has always been with Smoker EZ. Our guests commented over and over how they loved the food, and how much better it was than the usual wedding food. I would highly recommend Smoker EZ BBQ for any event / party / situation that required food.

Streetside 62 has excellent food for a good value. The restaurant is a terrific place to have a meal in the dining room and a cocktail on the patio. Their catering is top notch (of course it helps dealing with the owner directly). The food does not drop in quality just because it is a catering job. The 2 weddings and a few corporate events catered by Matt where very very good. Would recommend to anyone for sure.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

    • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
    • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
    • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
    • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
    • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
    • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
