I contacted city pro not knowing what to expect in regard to my problem. I had a garage full of items needing to be trashed. Was I ever surprised at the response. Not only were they willing to help but immediately responsive. Met with them less than two hours later and all my problems were solved including the trash. Their service was absolutely great . The price was more than fair and it was so easy. I highly recommend anyone to give them a call if you need help

AJ and his co-worker were great! Arrived early, took care of everything I requested. Gave me guidance on where I should put my new medicine cabinet. (See photo attached). Also gave me great info on a new garage disposal that I am thinking of purchasing. Thank you so much! Will be using your services again for sure.

I just needed some drywall and insulation installed in the ceiling of my garage after I fixed a busted pipe. He was on-time, quick and efficient, and did a great job leaving the site clean. I had to go to work in the middle of the job, so there were a couple little things we agreed to that were forgotten, but overall I definitely recommend him.

I hired Greg with “If I had a Hammer” back in November 2016 for a complete bathroom remodel, new siding, new electrical and plumbing and several other renovation needs for a bank owned home I purchased. I tried to get multiple bids from different contractors that specialized in different work that was required but Greg was the only contractor that assured me his company could handle all of my project needs in one bid. I had a strict budget and only expected to get the essentials handled because I knew the cost of each project. Not only did Greg go above and beyond on the bathroom remodel but he did so many extra tasks around the home that completely brought my house together. He literally treated my home as if it was his (a lot of contractors will say they will do this but HE actually did). I have to tell this one example because I think it says so much about what kind of contractor & person he is. I had to have a mold remediation specialist come in for mold in my basement/garage (the only other contractor that I used) and I was unable to oversee their work due to other obligations. Greg came to the house to check on the job and saw that they were doing an extremely poor job. He took pictures of their work and sent it to me. This was a huge deal because I would never have second guessed the remediation myself since I was unfamiliar with it. I asked them to come back and asked Greg if he would oversee it for me. My basement is beautiful and entirely clear of mold because of his efforts. I highly recommend “If I had a Hammer” for all of your project needs. Greg himself is a man of few words lol so don’t let that throw you off, BUT I can promise you he is trustworthy, hardworking and genuinely loves to doing the work that he does – which is a rarity. You will NOT regret hiring him.

We had our garage floor finished. Pippen removed all of our stuff (there was a lot of stuff) and covered it to protect it from the elements. They cleaned the floor, filled all the cracks and put a great finish on. The were on time, and completed the job exactly as promised. Very clean, very professional, very good work. We will absolutely hire them again for our household maintenance needs.

We hired Crossway to enclose a corner of our basement for a bedroom. Josh was unavailable, and due to the urgency we had for the project to be completed, he sent someone else to quote the project. Due to miscommunication, the quote was much lower than the actual amount of work that needed to be completed. After some bumps with an employee, whom we fired from our project, Josh came through and made it right, and finished our project personally. He completed more work in the two days he spent at our house than the employee who had been working for a week. He was upfront and honest with us about the miscommunication issues, and while we ended paying more than quoted, it wasn't anything we weren't already prepared to pay. Josh rectified the employee situation to our satisfaction, and was more than patient with us and our deadline.

I had ceramic tile installed in my basement Family Room. This was no easy job-due to the fact that the room was 20 X 14 and one end of the floor needed to be leveled. To add to my unusual request....I of course wanted Black Grout!!! Which is not carried by most places. Jake and Shawn took it all in stride and delivered a perfect installation job. The floor was leveled and the tile and grout work looks amazing. They were very professional from Jake's initial quote to his and Shawn's installation. Also, I was very pleased with their daily update on their progress and the fact that each day they clean up the area, leaving it just as that had found it that morning.....I would definitely use and recommend United Building Solutions

I worked with JB Clark Construction on designing and building a carport attached to my house. I could not be more pleased with the results. Jim and his staff helped to design the carport as well as supply me with drawings and a materials list to help me get it approved with the city. With his help, that process went fast and efficient. The actual building of the carport was quick and efficient. The result was a sturdy carport that looks like it was built with the house. At the inspection, the city recommended (optional) additional support — Jim went over and above by coming back and completing this optional request...at no additional charge — and followed up with the city's final approval. I would definately recommend JB Construction and do plan on hiring them for additional work. TF - Kettering, Ohio

Purcahsed a 20 year old home that desparately needed updating. The kitchen, bathrooms, study, closets & pantry, wood & carpeted floors were all renovated and refinished. Interior house painting was also completed. Matt and team are very easy to work with and addressed everyone of my needs when changes invariably occur. I had my fair share of those too. He always said no problem, I'll take care of that at a reasonable price. He also stands by his work, Ive had some issues with plumbing (manufacturer defects 2 years later) which he took care of no questions asked and at no charge. I highly recommend Matt for your home building and/or renovation needs. Dan Drew

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

      What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

      • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
      • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
      • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
      • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
