Tom and Kathleen have done a great job helping my wife and I train our 6 month old puppy. The training techniques are fully explained and they walk you through each step with your dog so that you fully understand what you need to do. You can tell the trainers love dogs and have a good connection with them. Highly recommended.

Suzie was great! She came to our home and just observed for a few minutes how our dog was behaving and gave us some tips and training that have completely corrected some very negative things we were seeing. We had already taken him for some basic puppy training at 8 months, however he was exhibiting some behaviors like jumping, barking uncharitably, snapping and chewing we couldn't seem to correct. With her guidance and with some work on our side, he has done a 180! She also helped identify some things that are just puppy behaviors and taught us how to correct. Best money we've spent! Suzie is very straight forward with how much time of hers is needed to alter the dogs behavior, and it's much less than we expected (one, 1-hour session in our home)! While our meeting/training want what my wife and I expected it to be, it was the perfect approach I've already recommend her to my brother and would recommend to anyone looking to improve their relationship with their dog and correct some bad behavior. As always, it's usually teaching the humans lol Cannot recommend Suzie enough! Chris

My husband and I got our Border Collie (Isis) when he was 8 weeks old. We started training classes with Cindy soon after. Isis is almost 10 years old now.over those nine plus years we went through basic, Intermediate, clicker, canine good citizen, agility, o-gility...pretty much everything Cindy offers. The classes are fun and informative, a great bonding experience for you and your dog. Once we ran out of classes we just kept going back. Cindy is an excellent teacher and trainer. You will learn just as much as your dog if not more. Isis loves going to "school" as we call it. Just saying the word "school" to him makes his ears perk up then he dashes to the back door ready to go. Cindy makes dog training (school) something to look forward to every week. Thanks Cindy.

Dog Logic is the logical choice in dog training; from puppies to older adult dogs. The training of my Dachshund was amazing and he can really be a part of the family with his good manners that he learned. Check it out and I recommend a private session to have your animal assessed to his/her own abilities. Well worth my money!

Dianne did an exceptional job grooming our Goldendoodle Winnie. Winnie looks beautiful! We felt extremely comfortable leaving our puppy with Dianne. She was warm and welcoming, treating Winnie as if she was one of her own. In the past when we would pick Winnie up from the groomer, she was bolting for the door as if to say "let's get out of this place!". However, when we picked her up from Dianne, she was roaming the house and playing with Dianne's dog. We could tell she was very comfortable and not anxious at all! Dianne has earned our business going forward and we highly recommended her services to any pet owner. Thank you, Dianne!

I am a first time dog owner and the classes were fun, informative and easy to understand for both me and my puppy. You will learn how to train your dog and get lots of practice and feedback in the class. The written materials were helpful.

We took our wild and crazy, chocolate lab puppy Lakota to Gina's puppy training classes. It was our last hope. When we finished the classes we had a well behaved, well-mannered, little lady. all of which we owe to Gina Dias. She is also a sitter and we have used her many times. Lakota loves her and her dog Lady. We highly recommend her in all aspects of training and care. Tom and Janet Delahanty, North Royalton, Ohio

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

    • What type of training methods do you use?
    • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
    • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
