AJ was unbelievably responsive. He responded to my inquiry within minutes and then guided me through hot water heater selection. He did the install later the same day. His quote was the price - not a nickel different. No surprises! The install went smoothly and was done efficiently and in a tidy manner. We will have AJ back for other plumbing and HVAC needs. And, he'll be my first call for other random home repair/improvement needs. Thanks AJ!

I would highly recommend Dea Electric. Greg was able to come the same day. He had given me a price to repair an outlet and add a smoke detector. When he arrived, it was a simple fix and there was no charge!! Not even a trip charge, who does that anymore! I really appreciate his honesty and good will. Very grateful!!

Jeff worked quickly & efficiently to upgrade a 35 amp fuse box in the basement to a 60 amp breaker box. He installed dedicated lines to the sump, the fridge & the pool pump. He also gave good ideas, discussed options and intalled several lights & outlets. Outside, he upgraded and rewired the garage from what could only be described as a sub-standard set up to much safer and efficient setup. He also ran electric to and wired in a large shed in the back yard. Finally, he did all of the above for a very fair and reasonable price. I deal with more than a few contractors through work and at home. I highly recommend him and he will be my first call for all electrical needs in the future.

This company I would definitely recommend. The initial installer had a glitch with our chandelier. The chandelier was extremely difficult to install, and we didn't have the schematics to reinstall after we moved from one house to another. The owner Tony came out and look at the chandelier's picture when we had it installed in our previous home and put it back together again. It was worst than Humpty Dumpty! He is AMAZING, AND DEDICATED TO HIS COMPANY'S STANDARDS, AND INTEGRITY!! Tony got to our home to repair the chandelier at 7p.m. and stayed until 2:00 a.m. to complete the job. I couldn't believe it! AMAZING COMPANY WOULD RECOMMEND TO ANYONE, GREAT JOB AND A SHOUT OUT TO TONY! I apologize for taking so long to put my review, I've been crazy busy. You guys are the best!

Mr. Hill's passion for the work he does is evident. His attention to detail is refreshing. He's a joy to talk to and always has a smile on his face. He did a thorough assessment of the project and offered helpful advice while explaining what needed to be done. He also did a few minor repairs that he noticed and did not charge me anything extra. Larry Hill will now be our family's repair guy. I was very pleased with the work he did.

Chuck came to my home for routine water heater repair. He arrived early and went straight to work. He brought along his son whom he was training. In no time, the water heater was repaired. He also alerted me to a potentially dangerous situation involving my furnace vent. I was completely unaware. Thanks to Chuck's knowledge and honesty, we will be safe this winter. Highly recommend Chuck. Will definitely call him for my next repair.

My husband and I had a couple rooms painted, a wall repair, a ceiling water damage repair, and a sink installation. Everyone we worked with was so kind and respectful. They were always on time and communicated with my husband and I very step of the way. The job they did was amazing. I added on services midway through with no hassle and quick turn time. I changed paint color for one room with no grief. They did all the little extras to make us thrilled. Even did a few paint touch ups we didn't even request. For the ceiling repair, they went out of their way to match the paint color on our ceiling that was painted in the 1990's - it looks amazing! We've already asked for another estimate for another job. Will be hiring them again. Reasonable price and excellent services!! You won't go wrong!

I had a "big" plumbing company provide a service several years ago, twice; and was again experiencing water leaking around base of toilet. Decided to give Plumber Joe a try this time and he actually installed the flange the other company charged me not only to install but also to come back out and repair.....and he charged far less than the other company had charged to install and fix their invisible flange. Thank you Joe for providing a quality job with actual parts and knowledge.

It was clear that the electrical system and socket had caused a small fire. Mr Winner sorted thru the wires, added new wires, hooked all up in a matter of a few minutes and tested each wire and all the sockets in the room. Thanks. I'll call him next time I need to have a short circuit repaired.

A home inspection revealed some potential electrical issues. I hired Scott to further asses the wiring of the entire house. Scott was able to put me on the schedule quickly. I felt I was able to make an educated decision on whether or not to proceed based on his inspection. Would absolutely hire again.

We hired David for a complicated water restoration project. Due to an improperly installed 1st floor deck door, water penetrated our basement wall, resulting in a complete wall and ceiling demo. David worked with us to fix the deck door the way we wanted it fixed, and repaired our basement so we can’t tell there was ever any damage (drywall, paint, trim, crown). He was incredibly responsive throughout the process , and came back to make everything look right when touch ups were needed. He worked very efficiently. Highly recommend.

I posted a request to re-key the new home we just purchased to include four exterior doors and the mailbox. Within minutes I had a quote and the Flying Locksmiths could come out the same day. They emailed when they were on the way and arrived on time. The technician, Seth, was very nice and, while he was able to re-key the doors, had to take the mailbox lock back to the shop to make a key. I had also asked Flying Locksmiths to tighten the loose original door knobs on our "new" 1928 home. Seth tried his best but was unable to fix them due to age. So, he did not charge me for that task. Overall, was extremely pleased with quality, price and service. Highly recommend!

Michael did a fantastic job installing two faucets, a new vanity and replacing a toilet. He is a true professional who did everything to make our renovations a reality in short order. The highest praise I can offer is to tell you I will be having him return to our home ASAP to do plumbing and carpentry work. Michael is congenial, competent and efficient. Not only that but he also did a wonderful job cleaning up after the project was completed.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
