Despite a couple set backs with our pup where he wasn't able to attend his lesson Jeff was more than willing to work with us and reschedule those lessons. Jeff is very caring and loves every animal he works with.

I recently took my 7 month old Anatolian shepherd to Advance K-9 due to issues I was having with her in house breaking her, and the normal puppy behaviors that were getting out of control with me trying to train her. My puppy stayed with Advance K-9 for two weeks. Now that I have her back it is like having a new dog. She is focused, obedient and is now thriving on taking commands from me. I am definitely on the track I need to be with my dog. And could not have done so without Advance K-9. My family would gladly bring in future dogs to them and would recommend others to his company.

Melissa did a wonderful job with my timid and shy Boxer pup. He had no obedience training to speak of when she got him. When we got him back after the 2 week board and train he is a completely different dog. The behavior changes were noticed instantly. He is now a well behaved and is truly a part of our family. I can't thank Melissa enough for what she has done for Hero.

Wow! What a great experience working with the Bohannons. They helped us understand our role in our fur babies life. Our Cayta is a much happier and better behaved dog. Between Stephanie's training 'know how' and Brett's understanding of animal behaviors they've changed how we respond and deal with Cayta, making us a much happier family. I would definitely recommend them for any of your dog training needs.

Alicia, thank you so much for helping our newly adopted dog Jesse adapt to her new surroundings! We were afraid we would have to return her to the shelter because of her agressive behavior toward us and our other dog. But on the recommendation of a friend, we called you, and learned how to better control our dogs. We have no intention of giving Jesse up now! Thanks for your help!

Brandon from NKY pet sit took care of our dog and cat while we were on vacation. We were anxious about leaving our animals home but he calmed our nerves. We knew that they were all in good hands with Brandon. Our animals loved him and they were well cared for. Brandon also brought in our mail and took out our garbage. We will definitely use him again!!

Elissa is a thorough, skilled and caring trainer. She listened to my concerns/needs. After meeting me and my dog, she developed a workable plan that met my rewards-based method preference. I rescued an 11-month German Shorthaired Pointer who had a very high prey drive and absolutely no recall. My GSP is now a reliable trail and beach dog who responds to a code word and/or whistle. ("Come" no longer worked when we met Elissa.) Elissa worked with us 4-5 times, but mostly she gave me the understanding, skills and followup exercises to work with my dog myself. She explained behavior theory behind the exercises, showed me how to properly carry them out. She followed each training session with detailed notes and other resources. Success wasn't instant, but steady. With Elissa's help, I have a trustworthy companion whom I feel comfortable letting off leash.

My dog is easier to control now. The trainer suggested a harness to prevent pulling which works well. He socialized her more and she listens to basic commands. He taught me how to read my dog's behavior in a more positive manner with an understanding of how you speak and react to her will correlate with the response you seek from her. Trainer took her in for 2 weeks and it was well worth it. Trainer wants owner to be satisfied with services and has gone up and beyond to achieve that. Highly Recommended

I work with Alecia and All Good Paws, once a week. I recently adopted a puppy and have been working with Alecia for about 4 months now. My dog get compliments from my friends and clients all the time for her behavior as well as some compliments for fun tricks she is learning. I wouldn't have a clue how to train my dog without Alecia's help and guidance. Dog training is truly very valuable and in my mind, a necessity when owning a dog. Alecia is great and particularly loved by my dog.

I have tried several groomers in the past for my two goldendoodles... mobile ones that would come to my home, small independent pended, as well as large well-known companies. None ever seemed to be the right fit for different reasons. Then we came across Beth at K & M. We have FINALLY found a great groomer!!! She is always friendly with both myself and my pups, very professional, and always does a great job. You can really tell she enjoys her job and has a passion for animals. I would highly recommend Beth to anyone!!!

He has been very informative and knowledgeable on the behavior of dogs. We are very encouraged to complete the training.

Bob Marcus trained my Boston Terrier and did an excellent job! He taught him obedience, manners and numerous tricks. When he first started working with my Boston Terrier, the dog had a major problem with aggression toward other dogs after he had been attacked at a dog park. Well those days are over! My Bostie is now a model of good behavior and gets along with other dogs very well. Not only that, but he knows a zillion tricks now-- he can do paddy cake, weave poles, jump through hoops, he will lie down and stay for as long as you want! Bob is patient, easy going and a pleasure to work with. I would recommend him highly.

As a ...ahem...somewhat overprotective pet mom, I am very particular about entrusting my pets to anyone. Danielle has cared for my five cats several times, and I could not be happier with her or with the care she gives. Each time I return home, they are happy and content. The food and water bowls are clean and full and the litterboxes are empty. She keeps me updated with daily texts, so I never have to worry. Initially, I would not have thought it was necessary to visit twice a day for cats, but I have to say, I'm really glad she does and it's well worth it. She is such a pleasure to deal with, and has such a nice, gentle way with the animals. I highly recommend her!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

    • What type of training methods do you use?
    • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
    • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
