FAQs
- How did you get started doing this type of work?
I pretty much just fell into this line of work. I have had a very large number of jobs in my life from working on nuclear reactors in the navy to working a factory job. I did some odd and end jobs and kept buying tools for them and now I have a large collections of tools and knowledge. I Really took a liking to working for myself and I don't think I could go back. So this looks like what I will be doing for a long, long time.
- What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
You should always check the references that they give you. If they don't volunteer references then be sure to ask. It is important to know that this individual or business has done this type of work before. You should know what the homeowners they have worked for think about them.
- What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?
The only thing I wish people knew was that labor normally cost the same a materials. People call and I go give an estimate. If the materials cost $1500 then the bid will be around $3000. A large percentage of the time they say wow a guy was here _______ and he bid it at $2250. This should scare you away from this contractor, as he is under bidding his work. There is probably a reason for this. The biggest reason is they are not insured. People who are not insured always under bid the insured competition because they do not have the overhead that a business has.
