Hired them to tear down old fence and porch rails. Then they installed all new and stained them. Tony ensured throughout the process that we were satisfied. His crew showed great attention to detail. We plan to use him for future projects.

R&D renovated my ~250 sq ft deck and added a roof. They did quality work for a reasonable price. Sam was flexible, easy to work with, and helped me work up a design that turned out to be perfect for our desired layout.

I have employed Tom's Building Services for more than 5 years. On my personal home, he trim painted, installed h2o heater, bailed out a roofing contractor that didn't properly flash a chimney, tuck pointed, built hand rails on the deck, installed leaf gutter protection. He has also successfully completed electrical, plumbing, soffit repair, pressure washed and painted gables, on our rental properties. Tom is a talented , honest craftsman.

A little back story- I hired a general contractor that quit because it was "so complicated" & left my patio an absolute mess. I spent weeks getting new quotes & searching for a new contractor after that disaster. Most contractors were hesitant to take this on after seeing the way the old contractor left the patio. Dave was the only contractor that took the time to make sure every single detail was covered & what we wanted. He spent a good amount of time with us mapping out exactly what he was going to do. He also brought up several good points & ideas we hadn't considered before. Dave & his team constructed a PERFECT deck with a covered pergola. Dave went above and beyond our expectations! The team arrived on time each day & finished the project in just a few short days. Dave did exactly what he said he was going to do at a very reasonable price. The space is flawless! We are in love with our new outdoor oasis and will enjoy it for all four seasons! I would 100% recommend this company.

I have been a customer of Mark Webber Landscaping for many years, and have always been pleased with the level of service and communication with Mark and his team. Over the years, Mark’s company has installed a new landscape (still beautiful after many years), new lawn, underground piping and French drains to solve a water issue. My neighbors often comment on how beautiful my lawn and exterior of my home are. That is thanks to Mark Webber. I can heartily recommend his fine services to others who seek to have a perpetual beautiful lawn and landscape. Kathleen S. West Carrollton, OH

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.
