Kate has been providing math tutoring to our ten-year-old who has missed quite a bit of math instruction at school due to various issues. Kate seems to be very good at figuring out what our daughter does and doesn't know, and helps her understand in a way that is calm and respectful with a little fun added in. Best of all, after the first session our daughter said "I like Kate because she showed me I DO understand a lot of math"--and we have had no complaints from her about adding an hour of math tutoring to her schedule. Kate also knows how to separate what procedures and vocabulary she needs to teach/explain in sessions versus what material our daughter needs to spend time practicing on her own.

My 11-year-old daughter had taken guitar & piano lessons from Michael over the course of 2 years. He was very flexible with times & even locations for the lessons.....a studio in Ypsilanti, a music room at a nearby music store....or your own home. Michael is old school & understands Music at all levels & as such, communicates with young kids very well. Michael is also a very patient instructor, which he had to be with my daughter. I highly recommend Michael as an instructor to any problem.

I mentor people who want to improve their accents in English to make their speech more understandable. Reducing your accent will help you in the workplace and at school. I have lived overseas most of my life and speak five languages, and so I know what it is like to learn another language as an adult. This means that I can understand what you are going through. I also happen to have a PhD in linguistics, which means that I can pinpoint and diagnose where your speech problems lie and what you need to do to improve it. Of course, there are no magic pills. If you want results, you will still need to practice and put out effort, but we can make it fun. The adventure awaits.

Over the years I have made a point of writing some of the material I intend to teach in class. I found this to be particularly useful in my Russia and Easter Europe elective. Eventually this led to write two books on Russian history. The first came out in 2003 and is entitled “Renegades, Rebels and Rogues Under the Tsars. The second is due to come out this March and is entitled “ Enemies of the People Under the Soviets. This experience has helped me to guide many of my students, who often struggle to achieve their potential carrying out research projects and writing term papers.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.
