Arron is a highly knowledgeable, non stop, diligent worker who completes every detail of each job to total satisfaction on schedule. His quotes are fairly priced and he is supported by a great team who also does meticulous and high quality work. He truly offers a complete package in painting, electrical, plumbing, installations and repairs of all kinds. I would highly recommend him. He helped me with dry wall repairs, total room closets etc. painting of a condo, detailed calking, installing ceiling fans, new electrical outlets, installing cabinets, plumbing installation of toilets, a faucet and water line for a refrigerator, hanging all new light fixtures through out replacing locks and more.

Kent responded quickly and made arrangements to do the work the day after He first contacted me. He and his daughter, Betsy, finished an hour earlier than he estimated and charged me according to the actual time worked rather than the original bid. They were friendly, prompt, efficient, and effective. I plan to call them again for a remodeling job on a bathroom.

I am very impressed and pleased with the finished product! A few weeks ago, I had them come over and give me an estimate on a bathroom shower/tub remodel as well as some drywall work in my basement. Both projects were priced very well and quite reasonable. I decided to hold off on the bathroom work until later in the year due to trying to save up some money but the basement drywall looks amazing! The job was done quickly and the taping/mudding/sanding/priming was done flawlessly! Bob, as well as his employees are very friendly, attentive to your wants/needs and great at communicating throughout the whole repair process! If you need any remodel or repair work done, then this is the company to call. I am having them powerwash and stain my deck as well here in the next couple of weeks. I look forward to another impeccable job!

Job was to finish a 15 x 26 portion of my basement with insulation, framing, drywall, molding, electrical, suspended ceiling, lighting, hang two doors and floor paint. Strengths included continuous service, responsiveness to most requests, and completing on budget. Weaknesses included poor quality of suspended ceiling installation, doors binding requiring planing by owner, and lack of response to voice mail messages. Also the job was speced at about 10 days, but took about 15 days due to ceiling difficulties. Overall, The company was easy to work with and generally capable. The owners specific work was well done, but some quality issues existed with the support workers. Several phone calls requesting information were not returned, including calls related to work that was not completed. The cost was quite reasonable, however I will have to redo some items primarily the ceiling due to sloppy tile cuts and floor paint that was not adequately prepped. I would consider hiring the company for future work, but would request rework if quality issues existed.

Will has been helping remodel my bathroom which was a mess. Him and and his crew have been very informative and nice. The plumbing is giving them problems, but Will is working hard to get done and keep cost down. I am happy with the work and trust them. Will is the person to do a project if you need one done.

Fusion Contracting did an awesome job on my old kitchen sink area. Plumbing had to be rerouted, a very old counter top w/backspash and old sink had to be replaced in a very limited space. Fusion did a remarkable job in getting the job done and did it well. The contractor made it his business to make sure it was done RighT! They did not just rush in and get it done quickly and recklessly. I am planning to use this contractor for future repairs. Staff was extremely nice and willing to work with you.

J Méndez painted our basement in our last house and not only stuck to the time frame he gave us, he also stuck to the price he quoted us. His work was flawless and professional. We sold that house and every showing we had they loved the basement. He also put up doors and painted trim for us and that was an added boost to our houses appearance. The people that came through the house all stated how nice the house looked, the new doors included! I highly recommend this contractor!!

Shaun was hired to remodel/finish my basement. All work was done in a timely matter, no mess was left behind. As him and his crew left daily, all tools and material left behind were stacked neatly out of the way. This was not the first crew I had on the job, the first crew left things a mess everyday they left. Shaun's crew used plastic to contain the dust, and also covered the vents to prevent dust from blowing back into the furnace. Very polite, did everything he could to keep cost down. Also probably going to hire him back to do all the trim work throughout the house.

Jason did a wonderful job at our home! As clean as a contractor can be after each day, moved our plumbing, updated our wiring (with cool USB ports!) and built the most amazing custom cabinets--with the detail we wanted and installed a modern laminate floor. Would recommend him to anyone!

After hearing so many horror stories from friends about contractors they used, we're so glad we found Toledo Custom Homes. They seem to truly care more about our family and our home than about "getting the next draw". Our basement remodel was completed on time and on budget, and looks just like the 3D drawing they did before they started. We always shop around for everything, but I would at least talk to these guys before you make a decision about your project. It was a good move for us.

Leo's team did painting and on a basement renovation project. They are very professional and were able to fix previous mistakes in the drywall from a previous contractor. Leo is responsive and friendly, and everything was done right on schedule. We are looking forward to working with Leo for future projects.

I hired OC Construction to complete the basement bath remodel that I just couldn't manage to finish on my own. They were able to take my vision and partial work and complete it and turn it into a usable space, within the budget I had and in a timeline that worked for me. They were courteous, prompt and efficient; I will be giving them a call again for future jobs on my properties.

CAS Carpentry remodeled my kitchen and basement. Chuck and his crew were fabulous, friendly and hardworking. CAS has their own line of modern and traditional cabinets in various finishes. I purchased White Shaker cabinets from CAS and I couldn't be happier with the quality. I'm overwhelming happy with completed projects.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

      What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

      • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
      • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
      • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
      • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
