Mr. Peterson did everything a contractor a contractor should do to rate 5 stars. He showed up on time. He didn't ask to borrow any equipment from me. His quality of work is that of an artist not a master craftsmen. He cleaned up after himself. This is the 2nd most important thing to me next to quality of work. Lastly, there were no cost overruns. I would highly recommend Mr Peterson and will myself be using him exclusively from now on.

Shaun Spitulski did a good job repairing my two electrical problems. One required installing a new wire around a corner by making a groove in drywall and then repairing the drywall after the new wire was set into the groove. The other problem turned out to be a simple rewiring of a switch box in the garage but the problem box needed to be located before it could be fixed. I am completely satisfied with the work Shaun did for me. He took the time needed between drywall patch layers to allow the patch to dry, sanding between layers. His attention to detail gave me a quality end product with no visible groove in the wall after the room was painted (something I did soon after the repair was completed.) I would recommend Shaun to anyone for electrical work and would call on him again in the future if needed.

Costa Pro LLC is a top notch company. The wind storm in march did a number on my roof, not only did they strip the old roof off, they replaced my fascia and replaced the roof, all in one day. I got quotes from other companies, but Costa Pro had the most affordable prices and a warranty that lasts double everyone else's. The exterior of my home was in need of repair as well, and Costa Pro LLC was up for the task. They put in new vinyl soffits, and the opening around my garage door. Costa Pro also painted the exterior and trim of my house, and replaced my leaking gutters. My house went from the worst on my street, to the best. I have gotten nothing but compliments from all my neighbors. I can't thank Will and everyone else at Costa Pro LLC enough for everything they did for me and my family. I strongly recommend Costa Pro LLC.

Fusion Contracting did an awesome job on my old kitchen sink area. Plumbing had to be rerouted, a very old counter top w/backspash and old sink had to be replaced in a very limited space. Fusion did a remarkable job in getting the job done and did it well. The contractor made it his business to make sure it was done RighT! They did not just rush in and get it done quickly and recklessly. I am planning to use this contractor for future repairs. Staff was extremely nice and willing to work with you.

I placed an ad on thumbtack because all of these other companies I called said they did not do roof repair work, just new roof installations. So I placed my ad and Michael responded immediately. He gave me a very reasonable price! Very punctual and polite person. We had two spots on our roof that needed to be redone. One was an issue where an old satellite was that was leaking water into our dining room. The other problem was our chimney area. He fixed both areas and we haven't had any water come into our home since. He has a great work ethic and he works long hours. Both times at our home he worked even after the sun went down. He's quick to respond to phone calls and text messages. I have passed his information on to someone else that is in need of a roofer - he's that good. I have nothing negative to say about him. You will not be disappointed with this individual.

I live in NC and my Mother lives in Monroe,MI. My Mother lives in an old house and desperately needed porch repair work done. I had tried to find someone to do the work to no avail. I found J&M Construction through Thumbtack. I got a quick response to my initial inquiry. He went to my Mother's and gave me a free and very reasonable estimate. As I live out of state I sent a deposit and once they received it he started wok. They kept me informed of progress all along the way. They were punctual and finished the job ahead of schedule. Everything was done very professionally and my Mother loves her new porches! They even sent me a picture for the finished job. I would highly recommend this company and if I could give them 10 stars they deserve it!!!

We recently had J Mendez assist us in getting our house ready to be put on the market. He helped us get each room ready by painting, repairing broken things and installing laminate flooring. He is very detailed and works to make things look their best and in good working condition. He also assisted us with preparing the outside of our home with installing cleaning out our gutters, installing gutter gards and power washing the house. He does excellent work and is professional in his interactions. Would recommend him to anyone..

Was very prompt about getting the work done. We had him take out our porch columns and replace them. Ron worked around not only our schedules but work great with the other contractor doing the concrete on our front porch. Very knowledgeable and precise with making sure our roofline was straight as well as supported for years to come. We also appreciate his honesty and patience with any questions we had.

Mr Fischer was very professional and responsive. Unlike many contractors he kept his word as well as his timeline on deliver of the project. My project came out better than expected and my family is truly happy with the results. I will be hiring Mr Fischer again soon.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

    What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

    • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
    • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
    • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
    • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
