I had a 6ft high wooden fence on its way down. Wood was rotting. Mike came and took a look at it. Thought of multiple different ways to handle the situation. He did some research on his own and gave me some feedback. He was very personable and honest about what he could and couldn't do and there were no surprises. I especially liked his willingness to talk things through with no pressure attached. I would most definitely hire Mike again.

Michael was prompt with his estimate. The price was very competitive. The work was amazing. He is very professional, yet very friendly. He understood exactly what I wanted and it was done precisely. I had a child's wood table and chairs refinished, but asked him to keep the labels and the "history" dings if possible and he did. I put those dings there when I was a child. The set looks great! I expect that it will be handed down in my family for another 70 years, or maybe more. Thank you Michael Boc.

Rod was chosen from five bidders, all of whom were close in their estimates. Unlike the others, he initially mentioned renovation options ( both interior and exterior ) that had not been considered in the planning. No one else "thought outside the box". This was a complete renovation of a house to prepare it for sale: new flooring throughout, new padding and carpeting throughout, much repair work of damaged wood and walls, a wood-burning fireplace rehab; installation of new vanities, sinks, mirrors, med. cabinets and accessories, 5 new ceiling fans, power washing, painting shutters and repair and painting of storage shed, caulking around foundation, installation of all new interior and exterior doors. You can see that the job was all-encompassing and Rod was up to the task and did some unique repairs along the way. The only two detours included four dead electrical outlets that still need to be repaired by an electrician and the time frame ran more than 3 and 1/2 months. If you are willing to be patient, Rod will do a bang-up job for you. He would text pictures of items for my approval before he would make a purchase. He provided me with a receipt for everything that was required for the job. This was an $11,000+ investment, but the new owner is not going to have any headaches once they move in. I hope to hire Rod again for work at my own residence and would comfortably make a referral to anyone in need of his services.

Tobias and his guys were great! I had about 700 sq. feet of carpeting ripped up and replaced with vinyl wood planking. They always came on time and worked efficiently. What meant a lot to me was being able to trust them at my home alone while I was away at work with no issues. Thanks, Tobias! My floor looks beautiful.

I hired Brian to repair some exterior trim moulding around my front door. What we thought would be a minor job turned onto a major total door replacement as Brian and his partner, Brad found much rotted wood. These two gentlemen did outstanding work. I could not have asked for two better workers. I highly recommend Brian and Brad. I will definitely use them again.

Our white oak living and dining room floors were original to our house that was built in 1971 and were very worn and scratched. Gawaun is a true craftsman. The floors look brand new. I highly recommend this young man to anyone looking to have wood floors refinished. I am amazed how beautiful the floors look. Thank you Gawaun!

I would definitely recommend them. Very helpful in the selection process and loved that they brought all of the options to the house for us to compare with the wood of our cabinets. Everyone I spoke with on the phone or in person was very nice and professional. You can tell they take pride in their work. They got all of the work done while we were out of town and met us on a Saturday for a walk through to make sure we were happy with the floors. We got laminate hardwoods on the entire first floor. An issue was a small hole in our cabinet, which they are coming to repair tomorrow. Also, a small section of quarter round was not nailed down and stains were found on our upstairs carpet from workers walking up there to use the restroom.

Ryan answered all my questions about the process of refinishing my floors. When he discovered the gorgeous wood under the old layer, he immediately sent pictures & explained that I didn't need to use a stain. Going natural was my best option. I almost changed my mind about scaling my house. I know the new buyers will love this these beautiful floors.

Danny hung a kitchen cabinet in my apartment last year. It seemed like a challenge because the building was very old (built in the early 1900's) with concrete walls. But Danny overcame that challenge and put a 1 x 20 inch strip of wood onto the studs to help brace the cabinet, (because the walls were curved) before installation. So on the inside, he put screws that reinforced the cabinet , which worked very well. When finished, it looked great. It was solid. I was relieved to have a place for my dishes, and even my landlord said it was a great job. So if you're considering any new additions for your place of living, call Danny Stephens. Great quality work, because he cares.

LAWRENCE construction & Remodeling is the best!  2 years ago I used this company to remodel my 1927 home.  James Lawrence, and his team of professionals did a phenomenal job on doing a complete remodel of the house including new/refinishing hard wood floors, new electrical, new plumbing, bedrooms, bath, load bearing wall removal and a custom made kitchen. This work included obtaining city permits and regular inspections - this was all handled by LAWRENCE Construction & Remodeling. They were extremely professional and efficient and the project was finished on time and on budget.   Fast forward to the present.  When I had some plumbing issues, LAWRENCE Construction & Remodeling responded promptly and were extremely helpful. They back up their work and their customer service is exceptionally excellent.  They sent out a certified plumber and electrician within days of my request and fixed the issue immediately. The quality of their work and their customer service is first rate!  I will definitely be using them again for any remodeling jobs in the future.   I highly recommend this company and will be making referrals to friends, family, and co-workers.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.
