The job was repairing the grout between the tiles on my back porch and our walk in shower floor. The grout had fallen out.

Jim did a great job with our rental. He installed a new hot water tank, attached new hand rails on the front porch, and installed a new toilet and vinyl flooring in the bathroom. Along with doing great work, Jim was very knowledgable and offered a few suggestions that would save me money in the future. I would highly recommend Jim's Handyman Services.

Steve custom-built the countertops in my home and did a great job. The routered Oak trim on the fact was such a good idea and matches perfectly with the color of my countertops. What a professional you are Steve. Thanks a million!!

We hired Vinnie to replace screens on our back porch and to power wash and stain our deck. It took several days to remove all of the stain and when he finished power washing, he sanded and applied the stain and it looks great! We came up with a few other things that needed to be repaired and he took care of them too. He's such a nice guy and did excellent work. There are always things that need to be done that my husband and I can't handle so we will definitely be calling Vinnie back. Thanks so much!

He designed and built a gorgeous porch over a hot and useless space. I believe he has posted the pictures on his site. He turned a barren patio into a haven! We love it! It is extremely well-built, classic and beautiful! We highly recommend this company for any project.

There is nothing bad to say about the work Aaron and Noah did for me in completely re-doing my front porch. After removing the old tile, we discovered the foundation of the old porch needed fairly extensive prep work, and they got that done well and in a timely way. When Mother Nature finally cooperated, they were able to lay the flagstone. The end result looks really, really nice. I am constantly getting compliments on the work that was done. These guys will do exactly what you want, and do it on schedule if at all possible. And if they do have any minor delays, they are good at communicating why -- and when your job will be completed. The work is excellent, and their prices are very reasonable. Given the level of professionalism they display, and their expertise, you would never know their company is still in its infancy.

Brenda Farley and her assistant Joel washed the aluminum siding on my home on Friday the 13th. Turns out Friday the 13th was my lucky day finding Deck Escapes. Brenda not only met my expectations but far exceeded them. If you're thinking about having your siding powerwashed do yourself a favor and check Brenda out before you make your final decision. They did use a powerwasher on my concrete patio, front porch and deck but used a hose with a trigger gun and the appropriate mix of chemical detergent to remove the dirt and stains. Her process is so much easier on the siding that full blast power washing. The siding was put on in 1972 and it looks like new. They also cleaned the roof to a large degree since our house has a mannered barn type slope. They also cleaned the brick and the whole chimney from the ground on up. The chimney had a lot of soot and they worked very hard to get most of it off. They treated my property as if it were their off, covering everthing that needed to be protected. Thanks again Brenda and Joel, I can't say enough good things about this most pleasant experience. You guys truly epitomize excellent customer service!!!

Mike did a great job power washing our house, painting our exterior trim, repairing some loose siding and staining our new porch and deck. We also had Mike and his crew do some demo work inside as we prepared for some remodeling and decorating. I know he is very experienced in plumbing jobs also.

We had our front stoop leading up to the front cement porch replaced. Joel was very responsive in scheduling the project and completed the job in two days. He completely re-poured the cement stoop with a slight slope to allow for water runoff and successfully sourced matching bricks that were damaged and used as overlay on the stoop. He surmised the original damage to the stoop was due to it having no slope and was very knowledgeable of masonry projects. His quality of work was very apparent. He was very prompt and informative, did a great cleanup job and is highly recommended.

Eagle Exteriors did a wonderful job for us! Our screened in porch was in desperate shape, with rotting wood, uneven ceiling, and sagging screens. Eagle basically rebuilt the porch for us. Not only did they do excellent work, but Keith also had some great design ideas! He suggested using bead board to partially enclose the lower half, (both inside and out) which turned out really pretty. When the project was finished, he painted the whole porch. The result was like adding a whole new room to the house! A beautiful, sturdy, well made room! The whole project finished in about 3 weeks, which is hard to believe. Keith was friendly, helpful, prompt, and clean. He has a true can-do attitude. Do yourself a big favor and hire Eagle Exteriors for your home!

I was introduced to John Corry by Randy Best, one of the top commercial real estate brokers in Columbus, which says a lot about John's dependability. I acquired a 24 unit building in South Columbus and John was there to help me rehab each unit one by one. He also did a great deal of welding work on a series of exterior steel porches that needed extensive repairs. John can pretty much do anything including HVAC, plumbing and electric as well as general handyman work, and he does it well and for a reasonable price. One of his greatest assets is that I can trust him to go in and quote a project, send me before and after pictures, and get it down in a reasonable amount of time, all while I am out of state, which says a lot about his trustworthiness and reliability.

Tim had powerwashed and refinished my porch and deck. I am amazed at how much better they look now. They came out much better than I expected. I previously had used him for some indoor painting and renovations. He was very thorough and completed the projects just as we had discussed. He was friendly and easy to work with. I will use him again on my next projects.

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

        Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
