Desmond's services were fantastic. He and his partner were both very professional and polite. I hired them to load a moving truck and they did it swiftly and properly. I wish I could have brought them with me to unload at my destination! If you have any concerns about who you are going to hire I would put those aside and hire Desmond in a heartbeat. Thanks Desmond!

I can not say enough good things about my experience with Andrews Moving company! I planned a last minute move and was just grateful to find movers for the day I needed, but after I looked up reviews for other moving companies, and saw all the horror stories, I realize how lucky I was to have had such a great company help me with my move! The company answered all my questions prior to my move and called the night before and gave me a one hour window they would arrive by, and true to their word, they were there. They packed the truck efficiently and carefully. Once at my new home, they unpacked everything quickly, and made sure I was happy with everything before they left. The moving company office also called me during the move to make sure everything was going smoothly. The movers themselves were friendly and very polite. I recommended this company to friends and family, and would use this company again in a heartbeat. As stressful as a move can be, the moving company made it easy and I am so thankful!

These guys showed up right on time, did a walk through to assess everything we needed moved and loaded. When finished, they double/triple checked with us to see if there was anything else they could help with before leaving. Very professional, nice guys. Did a great job! I would definitely recommend them to others looking for a good moving team. :)

Austin provided cleanout service for an extremely cluttered house that had not been lived in for many years. He was excellent!... professional, prompt, organized, efficient, courteous, friendly, and fairly priced. I also appreciate that he made the extra effort to recycle everything that could possibly be recycled. I highly recommend him, and plan to use his services again in the near future.

Don and his crew did an unbelievable job moving one of our daycare facilities to another location. He arrive promptly to give a quote on the same day that I called and he also was hired on the spot not because of the price but because his professionalism and experience. They arrived 5 minutes ahead of scheduled time and finished 1 and1/2 hrs sooner than projected. You don't see that from hourly moving companies.!! It's usually 2 hrs longer. Best brothers handled our equipment as if it was their own. I know everyone hates moving but with best brothers moving it was a blessing It made our moving transition so smooth and simple... Thanks Don and crew you'll be the only one we call when we have moving needs .

I accessed Thumbtack last week in search of a contractor that could replace the existing tile around my fireplace. My wife and I purchased some marble tiles a few weeks back to replace the existing tile with. We were struggling to find a contractor in our area that could complete the work with any level of confidence. The first few contractors we contacted were concerned about breaking the marble pieces while trying to cut them to fit the space. Thumbtack seemed like our last hope. After filling out the short questionnaire about the type of work that I was requesting, Rodney replied almost instantly. Not only did he reply, but he sent a very personalized response to me, addressing specific concerns about the job and even posing a few questions for me. Of course I replied right away and we were soon on the phone making plans for an in-home visit for an accurate quote. Rodney was very accommodating to my schedule. He offered to visit with me and my wife in the evening to give us his quote for the work. He was very friendly, very knowledgeable, and very polite. Rodney quoted us at a very competitive price - below most other quotes we had received. With a combination of his persone and his competitive price, we knew instantly that we wanted Rodney to complete this work for us. Rodney immediately made room for us in his busy schedule in order to complete the work "as soon as possible" as my original request stated. He quoted us on a Thursday night and started the work the next morning. I'm not sure that this is something that Rodney will always be able to do for his customers, but it was surely appreciated by my wife and I in this case. Rodney did a complete tear out and reinstallation project for my wife and over the course of three days. He completed the tear out and preparation on Friday, cut and placed all of the marble on the fireplace on Saturday, and finished grout and cleanup on Sunday. Rodney worked late into the day on Saturday, ensuring customer satisfaction and job completion by Sunday as originally planned. All the while, Rodney was very polite, very respectful of our time and space, and very tidy and thorough at the completion of the project. He made sure that there were no loose ends before leaving and ensured that my wife and I were happy with his work. He even offered to go above and beyond and complete further small services for us at no cost if we felt they were necessary to make the project more perfect than it already was. I would recommend Rodney to anyone in the Indy area that is looking for an efficient, knowledgeable, polite contractor that will surely get your job done the way YOU want it done. Rodney is not looking to rush through a job - he is working for his customers trust and a lasting relationship. He has certainly earned that with my wife and i. We've got several project ideas that we will be contacting Rodney about in the coming years. Thanks Rodney!

I used R&J Services to help me move. Rich was very helpful in that he did not finish until the job was complete. Also, everything was done much quicker than I had expected.. Especially for moving an entire house full of items in below freezing temps. He did an excellent job and I would definitely use him again or recommend him any friend or family member for services.

I sold my couch a month ago and Denon (D) and his then partner were the movers that the person that bought my couch had hired . They were so professional that when I needed moving help I was sure to call them. Denon (D) had given me a business card before leaving my home that afternoon. My experience was good on the moving my treadmill end of the deal. The movers or myself was not knowledgeable in taking the treadmill apart (electrical) and we couldn't get it back together as it was. Denon (D) is very professional and takes most of the work upon himself. He also does a great job at marketing for your company. He was very happy to give us magnets and business cards to pass out at our place of employment. Keep up the great job! My experience would have been excellent if we would have been able to get the treadmill apart and back together again. But Nordic Track almost made it impossible. Thanks D~~

Overall, I was happy with the work done. My house was a bit of a mess, and the major things I wanted done were taken care of. A couple of cobwebs got left, and some bugs in window sills didn't get vacuumed up, but...my kitchen is no longer nasty and they pulled all the gross lint hair whatever out of the bathroom fan. They were able to work around several dogs without worry, which was nice (dogs were confined, but needed to be moved around the house throughout the day) My only real complaint is cigarette butts. It's fine if you smoke, but leaving used cigarette butts on my property is kinda crappy...especially when there were trash bags outside available to throw them away in.

Moving? Use Great Lakes Premier Property Mgmt. ENORMOUS THANKS AND LOVE to the guys, (Sidney, Kenny, and Jacob) for a job “WELL DONE!” These guys were professional, prompt, polite, friendly, and very efficient. Not only were they very fast, but everything was handled accordingly, within the time frame which I was given. This was the smoothest move, and glad we went with this company. We’ll definitely turn to them again in the future, and HIGHLY recommend these guys for your next move. Respectfully Rachel & Matthew J - (4-21-18)

Steve was very professional and eager to do my work, even though my job was small and not very close to his headquarters. He even moved up the date of the work to accommodate some other construction I had scheduled. His team of 2 men were professional, polite, knowledgeable and helpful. I would recommend White Landscaping and Steve in a heartbeat. 2 (green) thumbs up.

I hired this team to move me. They arrived promptly and worked hard. It rained so they had to go out my back door meaning they had to take my furniture a part. This was done to prevent trashing my wet yard and tracking mud in the house. Price was very reasonable and I would hire them again. Kathy

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
