Anthony had a last minute schedule change on my service day. He called and we both benefited by rearranging the service time. I'm very pleased with the tile floor cleaning & grout sealing which was done within the specified timeline for the project. All ready for the holidays! Thank you!

Great remodel by Desmon and his team. Hired for remodel of kitchen. Painting, tile, backsplash and electrical work for recessed lighting. Demon was very professional, always on time. Came back in the evenings to check everything was ok, cleaned up and going as expected. One of his team, Jeff does the tile work and he is fantastic. We even made some last minute changes and they had no problem with it. Highly recommend and their prices are the best. Do not hesitate to use them.

Working with Groutsmith was an very satisfying experience from start to finish. The estimate was quick and much less than what I expected. Groutsmith showed up on time on the day the work was scheduled and finished in a timely manner. Groutsmith did a fantastic job restoring my tile and grout. My tile looks better than when it was new in 1988. They cleaned up after themselves and left my house looking better than when they came. Cudos to Brad Young and his team at Groutsmith.

I used Floor Coverings Intl of Greater PGH to renovate my commercial building on Liberty Ave in Bloomfield. Floor Coverings handled both the 1400 sq ft commercial space rented to tenants on the first floor as well the 1000 sq ft apartment above the commercial space. I am extremely pleased with the engineered hard wood we chose for the apartment as it has proven extremely resilient for the tenants living there, not to mention its aesthetic... We decided to install slate grey tile (reminiscent of hard wood) for the commercial tenant downstairs and have had very positive feedback from the renovation as it greatly improved the look and feel of the business. I would highly recommend Jeff for not only commercial but residential projects as well, he handled the property of both mixed use residential and commercial extremely well, not to mention he was reliable and answered promptly when I called. Hope this helps to provide some insight, certainly would give Intl Flooring PGH a call to quote against the Molyneaux's and Rusmer's, that is how I got a hold of them and it worked out very well for me, the floors speak for themsevs. -GSL Inc.

Travis and his crew did a super job helping us get our house in tip top shape for resale. Along with some siding and flashing repair/replacement, Travis also replaced an interior door, installed gutter protection, and painted our laundry room floor and walls. Rates were extremely competitive and work was done on time with thorough clean up. I'll definitely use Tri-Capital again in our new home.

I hired CJ for a full kitchen remodel, involving updates to the layout and installation of a large glass tile wall, new cabinets, soapstone counters and oak shelving. I designed the concept and floor plan and CJ and his crew did a great job of executing the plans. CJ showed great attention to detail and quality in selecting materials and the results are beautiful - particularly the tile and stone. I work full-time and was not able to be present during much of the project but CJ and his crew took good care of my house; everything was kept clean and secure throughout the project and I was informed of progress and changes to plans. They were also great about accommodated my requests to secure open walls and work areas in the evenings for the safety of my cat. CJ was great to work with; I’d hire him again.

This job was a residential vinyl tile floor in our basement. The floor was cleaned and multi-coats wax applied - looks awesome compared to what it was like before! Only down side we have is that we just had the baseboards and walls professionally painted and these now have wax on them. It is going to take a bit of work now to remove the wax and possibly repaint those areas. I would suggest that if your job has this scenario that you ask about possibly having the baseboards taped off before the wax is applied.

A few years ago, I bought an old 5 bedroom, 3 bath house that hadn't been maintained for 20 years. The master bathroom, a rare thing for a house built in the 1930's was beyond repair to say the least. With so much other work to do in the house, I decided to hire someone to tackle it and I'm so glad that I did. John did a wonderful job turning my nightmare bathroom into a truly spa like experience! The work included demo of the old bathroom, converting a closet to a tiled walk-in shower, installing a whirlpool bathtub with tile surround, a new toilet, a new sink with vanity and finally a beautiful tile floor. Thank you John! I think it goes without saying that I will be recommending you to all of my family and friends.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How can I get my grout clean?

Dirt, mildew and grime can make your grout lines look downright tragic. If you have the ability, DIY tile and grout cleaning is definitely doable. Your main obstacles are time, project size, availability of the right materials and effort. Your first step in tile and grout cleaning is making sure the surface area is cleaned of basic dirt and buildup and wiped down. Be sure not to use a bleach-based cleaning agent, which could react dangerously with the vinegar used in later steps.

Depending on the delicacy of your tile and grout, it may be wise to start with water and friction before proceeding to a cleaning solution. In the shower you can spray the area while brushing gently, or use a spray bottle filled with warm water on countertops or floors. If water won’t do the trick, try a solution of equal parts warm water and white vinegar, and repeat the gentle brushing motion. This combination should begin to lift dirt and grime from the grout. For additional tile and grout cleaning power, baking soda applied directly to grout lines and sprayed with your water vinegar solution can help suds off sticky grime. If your DIY cleaning solutions aren’t doing the trick, store-bought sprays and pastes may have more cleansing power. Rinse thoroughly after cleaning and enjoy your sparkling clean grout.

Tile and grout cleaning supplies include:

      • Old standard or electric toothbrush
      • Stiff bristle brush
      • Spray bottle
      • White vinegar
      • Commercial grout cleaner

How much does it cost to tile a shower?

The cost of tiling a shower depends on two main factors: the size of the shower and the quality of the tiles. In general, most professional tilers charge an average of $25 per square foot of tiled area and the national average cost for a tile installation project is $490-$750. The tiles themselves are the greatest variable; the cost depends on their size, shape, pattern and manufacturer. For example, tile purchased at a volume discount from a big-box store cost far less than tiles made in small batches by an artisan ceramics shop. Prices can range from as little as $1 to $50 or more per square foot of tile. Other factors that will drive up the total tile installation cost are grout and mortar, speciality tiles like bullnose caps or soap holders, and surface prep materials, especially if drywall needs to be replaced before the tile can be installed. Many tile installers will also remove and haul away any old materials from an existing shower installation.

How much does it cost to install a ceramic tile floor?

Tile installation costs for ceramic floors depend on the type of tile you select. You can purchase tile that sells for under $2 per square foot or tile that costs $50 per square foot — or more for artisanal and hand-painted tiles. The cost of labor to install a tile floor will also depend on the tile you select. It is far less labor-intensive to install a white 12-inch by 12-inch square tile than a 2-inch by 2-inch hexagonal tile with a distinct pattern. That extra time and energy equates to a higher per-square-foot installation cost. For example, a flooring pro may charge approximately $3.50 per square foot for labor to install wood-look tile in an area ranging between 6 feet by 24 feet and 8 feet by 48 feet. That same pro may charge $6 or more per square foot for a more intricate pattern, or a smaller space. Some installers may charge a minimum day rate for ceramic tile floor installation, such as $340 minimum per day, to cover business expenses and employee wages. If you’re looking to reduce costs, removing your existing flooring and handling any repairs needed can help eliminate prep work costs. Prep work may be charged per hour and could cost anywhere from $25 to $80 per hour or more, depending on the region and the type of repair work necessary.

How much does it cost to tile a bathroom?

Tile installation costs are a key part of your bathroom remodel costs. The tile you select (which can range from under $2 per square foot to $50 per square foot or more), the demolition and repair work required prior to installation, and the size of the job will all affect cost. You can install tile in the shower, on the counters, on the wall or on the floor. The national average for tile installation cost ranges between $490 and $750. Bathroom tile is easy to clean and durable for daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom tile installation costs:

      • Tile installation at $25 per square foot of tiled bathroom area.
        • A standard tub and shower combo requires tiles for approximately 60 inches of length. Calculate wall height and add 30 to 36 inches of tub width for the walls at the head and foot of the tub. If the tile walls are 6 feet to 8 feet high, in this example, the tile installation costs would run about $2,000. Price includes materials.
      • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with an 8-foot ceiling: $1,450. Price includes materials.
      • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with a 10-foot ceiling: $1,650. Price includes materials.

How much does it cost to install tile?

Tile installation costs vary widely depending on the tiles you choose, where you want them installed, and what kind of demolition and surface preparation you need to have done. The national average cost for a tile installation project is $490-$750. The more tiles that need to be cut by hand and laid on the surface, the higher the total cost. Tile installation professionals can handle many different types of stone, ceramic and porcelain tiles, applying them in kitchens, bathrooms, hallways and entranceways. They can create anything from artistic mosaic backsplashes in your kitchen to modern shower enclosures to rustic patios in your backyard. Tile installation professions often can remove existing flooring or old tiles and replace drywall. Tile prices range from $1 to more than $50 per square foot — handmade ones are even priced individually — depending on the material. Rustic, handmade or special-use tiles cost more to install because they must be applied to the surface one by one, rather than in a sheet. For most jobs, tile installation costs are based on the square footage of the project. For example, a standard 6-foot by 8-foot shower tile installation can average $1,200-$1,600, depending on whether the tiles go to the top of the shower or to the ceiling. The total cost of a tiling project also includes the grout and mortar, speciality tiles like bullnose caps, and tile mounting materials like backer board.
