Ricky was a true professional. On time and well versed in his craft. We had a ceiling fan issue where the light would not come on, but the fan worked. The previous guy we hired told us to get a new fan (so we did), but Ricky was able to diagnose the problem and the lighting issue. The best part about it is he identified the problem in less than 10 minutes. He's good and I will definitely be asking him back for other work around the house. I highly recommend him for your projects. In my experience with contractors you often don't get a good turnout, but Ricky was personable, nice and respectful. Trust him with your future project. It will be worth it.

Really good job, easy to work with. Expanded project to include getting another property ready to sell and Brian just rolled with it. Great price and work AND if you ask, a sweet little furry helper will come with. Very happy with this company. Will definitely use again.

Our home was flooded with water and the damage was tremendous. It happened from a pipe blowing off its cap from a very poor plumber's work who forgot to cinch the sleeve against the cap and stem in our upstairs bathroom wall's water pipe. We were lucky one of us was home to turn off the major water valve in the house. Kaphar came out immediately at an extremely late hour as soon as they heard about our incident. They came the same night it happened and were at our house within 20 minutes. They found the problem in the wall in about 5 minutes! The Kaphar professional that came that night was Chase Holmes. From that point forward our home was in great hands with the owner Charles, Chase and many wonderful team members doing quick demolition and water mitigation with sophisticated moisture review and analysis until everything was dry and ready for repair. The damage was extensive from several upstairs rooms to major portions of the downstairs. We even had structural issues caused from water soaking an area upstairs which made the heavily weighed section of our home sag down about 6 to 8 inches! The whole section had to be torn down and rebuilt. It's perfect! The repairs are impeccable, the team members experts in their field of construction work and all of them were very polite, considerate and professional. Kaphar was quick to take care of our home, and they also made sure to contact us and visit our home at least once a day if not two or more times a day. Their communication was clear, next steps were explained and planned WITH US throughout the whole process and the ATTENTION TO DETAIL made our home look brand new - it's 1,000 times better than when we bought it new! And the best part is they SHOWED UP WHEN they said they would, did EXACTLY what they said they would, worked above and beyond taking EXTRA STEPS to fix what needed to be fixed including correcting a different contractors poor workmanship from repairs made when our home was damaged from the 2013 tornado. They hauled off the damaged, unused materials, cleaned up everyday, and hired a professional cleaner several times throughout the process to keep our home clean and tidy while under construction. They worked with our insurance company on our behalf ensuring that all parties were treated FAIRLY AND EQUITABLY and satisfactorily. It was very comforting to have Kaphar by our side during this disaster. They gave us advice, offered options and kept us informed, and all along the way they educated us about what they were doing and why they were doing it. They provided an exceptional customer service experience, gave us quick responses to our questions or concerns, included us in decisions in every step and we TRUSTED them implicitly. We cannot express our GRATITUDE enough. We had someone care for our home, treating it as if it was their own in Kaphar. We highly recommend Kaphar, they are a very dependable and reputable firm. Their work is superior to ANY other contractor we have worked with - and unfortunately for us we've needed major repairs much too often. No one else will EVER touch our home again, Kaphar has us as life-long customers! Trust us, when you need help fixing your property after a major incident call Kaphar. You will be ecstatic about their service and so pleased with the exquisite end results from their work. We are expressing our gratefulness for them and giving them the highest praise and scores possible. We would give them 10 stars if that was an option. We hope you never have a disaster like this in your home but if you do choose to hire Kaphar. We are so happy! Kaphar is a top-notch company.

Several years ago I hired this group to do the impossible. I say impossible because this was the third company I had working on my project. I wanted my ground level patio screened in and in order to do so the deck above the patio had to be sealed in order to protect the patio from rain. This team understood exactly what I wanted and managed to make the deck a lovely place for my daughters to rest and sunbathe, while my husband and I enjoyed the comfort of a rain free patio. They did a lovely job on this project. Since they had been so knowledgeable on this project I hired them for a second project. I had purchased a Victorian house which was built in 1907. It was a mess. Bad floor plan. Brick chimney right in the center. No stairs to the upstairs portion of the house. This team did all the removal of walls, restored walls, and repaired everything in sight. When they were through, we had a $25,000.00 property that appraised for $104,000.00. Fantastic job. Extremely happy with them. Beverly White, Luther, Oklahoma.

As a DIYer who started a large remodeling project, I was hesitant to hire a contractor, because I wanted the satisfaction of finishing it myself, I was worried about the cost, and I was nervous about letting someone in my home while I was at the office. From my first meeting with Chris, I had a good feeling about him. He was prompt, professional, and knowledgeable about the work that needed to be performed. Based on these factors and his quoted price, I decided to trust him to finish the work I started. Chris and his crew continued to be prompt, professional, and reliable. He saved me from months of slow DIY progress. I hope to hire him for future projects and would recommend him to others.

David's work was extremely good and I could not more happy with the outcome. David took his time and paid great attention to detail while working on the project. I am extremely happy with David, his work, and the out come of the project. I'd hire him all over again if I had to and I would reccomend to others needing work like the type of work he did in my house if necessary.

I have referred Robbie Carnes/Banah Ltd to multiple clients and friends and have heard nothing but compliments regarding the quality of his work, timeliness and demeanor of his crew. I know I can count on him to contact our clients directly and treat them as we would. We have been very pleased with the work we've ordered on behalf of out-of-town or out-of-state clients. He treats small "handy man" type repairs with the same attention to detail and respect as larger remodel type projects. I have never had a problem reaching him or getting a return call and he always updates me on the status of the job and his comunication with our client. I am extremely pleased with his company and will continue to refer him.

Kenny recently contracted a BIG REMODEL project for me. Doing much of the work himself too. But he knew exactly what to do. Who to bring in. Help with such a creative mind. TRUST was a big thing for me. My wife would be here along with our kids as contractors were in and out. Kenny respected my wishes and made sure he was here frequently to insure quality and most important for my wife and kids, SAFETY. The quality of work from McMullen Construction and Design is second to none! Matter of fact, we are considering building a custom home and he will be the ONLY PERSON we do business with. HIGHLY RECOMMEND. (***KENNY HAS PICS OF THE WORK HE DID FOR OUR HOME, PLEASE FEEL FREE TO LOOK AT THEM ON INSTAGRAM OR FACEBOOK. ALSO WELCOME TO REACH OUT TO ME AS A REFERENCE, GET WITH KENNY****)

The experience was amazing! We had family in town and something was knocked into the window which caused it to shatter. Jumpquick Construction Services was at our house within the hour to seal up the window. They then went and purchased a new window for us and had it installed the same evening! With the weather being so cold we were so happy with the timeline which this was completed and our family time never skipped a beat. I would highly recommend this company to all friends and family.

We hired Jason to put a powder room and utility/indoor laundry room in our house. He did this by building into our (deep) garage, and then cutting a passage way through an interior wall to connect it all together. Throughout the entire process, he was honest, reliable, and often went above and beyond what anyone would expect from a contractor. Whether it was personally going to pick up materials ordered by us for the project, building something I had envisioned (but didn't necessarily want to drop thousands of dollars on purchasing), or going the extra mile like ensuring our garage was cleaned up and our car tire inflated (!!!) before he left on his last day, it was much more like having a good friend helping us out throughout the process instead of just a hired professional. In fact, my husband and I were just joking about how Jason was so great that it almost made us want to just come up with more projects just to keep him around. He is that good, that fair, and we are that happy with the outcome of his work. Having someone in your home when you're not around can be really anxiety inducing, but I never had any doubts about Jason's integrity. He never made us question or regret the trust we put in him, and I wouldn't think twice to bring him into our home again. We absolutely love the finished product, and I truly believe that it would have cost much more to accomplish had we hired anyone else -- not to mention the various "priceless" things he brought to the table. I highly recommend Jason for any project you might need help with, and we look forward to hiring him again in the future.

H-5 showed up on time, installed a new heat and air unit at a better price than most. They also Installed new quality windows and did a great job. My only regret is that I wished I had used them for all the projects that I have going.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

What do construction project managers do?

Construction project managers help in all stages of your construction project, starting from the very first step. Typically paid a percentage of a total project cost, they are part of the design and planning process and help ensure seamless communication between the design parties and the construction team. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, their scope of work includes preparing cost estimates, budgets and work timetables; interpreting and explaining contracts and technical information to other professionals; reporting work progress and budget to clients; collaborating with architects, engineers and other construction pros; selecting subcontractors and scheduling and coordinating their tasks; responding to work delays, emergencies and other problems; and ensuring compliance with legal requirements, building and safety codes, and other regulations.

The work of construction project managers may seem very similar to that of general contractors, but there are some critical differences. One difference is that, unlike most general contractors, project managers are not engaged in the actual construction — they are onsite overseeing the work of subcontractors. Another key difference is that project managers are hired during the design phase, while general contractors are hired after plans have been made. The project manager is generally paid a percentage of the total project cost, while the general contractor is more typically paid according to the bid they gave to build your project.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do I find out if a contractor is licensed?

It’s important to know if your project requires work by a licensed professional, as licensing laws can vary by state, locality, and job details. You can find general licensing information online at the government websites that handle occupational licensing for a given profession in your state or location. Some states designate a project cost over which you have to hire a licensed contractor. To find qualified licensed contractors, search your state’s licensing board. For example, in California, the Department of Consumer Affairs operates a searchable database through the Contractors State License Board. In some states, contracting licenses are provided at a regional level. You can find links to specific databases on BRB Publications’ Occupational Licensing page. Red flags that a contractor may not be licensed or may be providing an expired or false license number are unreasonably low bids or a request for complete payment upfront. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.
