We hired Everett to install tile that had fallen off our countertop backsplash, and also to haul a junk pile. He did a great job and was affordable. We will definitely use Everett next time we need handyman work done around the house.

Bryan Trent calls himself a "Handyman"--however, while both handy, as well as a man with tremendous integrity and character, he exceeds this label. Bryan came to us on the heels of four different construction-remodelers, providing an excellent comparison pool. In short, Bryan Trent has now been finishing our 1200 square foot remodel, and we have hired him as our permanent Handyman. More specifically, allow me to describe his particular skills and abilities for others considering his employment. 1) His construction skills are outstanding--we have been most impressed with the mantel, completion of our deck, mirror trimout, and hardware mounting on decorative wooden panels he made; 2) He can and will do most anything asked of him. If he is not heavily skilled in an area, he finds resources that prep him to complete special projects, such as the installation of a screen door on double panel patio doors, raising our treadmill to proper height with a wooden block design, and trimming the kitchen with retro moulding, to name a few; 3) While not a licensed plumber, he has skills in this area as well. As stated, he can fix most anything; 4) He took his time to insure high caliber work, respected our property (and we are extremely particular about this!...e.g., he wears "booties" over his shoes when walking on our new carpet)--and our time. 5) He offers a very fair price. After numerous contractors and construction personnel, we would, and have, hired Bryan Trent as our "Handyman," but he is really a contractor, carpenter, plumber, and whatever meets your needs. While working for you, he will afford you respect, listen to your needs, communicate with you concerning your wants, and give you his very best effort. We could not be more pleased to have found and hired, Mr. Bryan Trent via Thumbtack. If you do the same, he will not dissapoint.

Gabe doesn't promise anything he can't deliver. He takes pride in his work and it is reflected in the quality and craftsmanship of everything he does. His first project for us was building a pergola to add to our deck. We get harsh west sun and wanted something open, but also something that added some shelter. We use all the time. It's better than we ever expected. Our next project was a major remodel of our master bathroom. I smile every time I walk in. Everything from the tile to the shower to the tub to the sink. He did a fantastic job. Gabe hires great subs, when necessary, and they are equally as professional. He helped us find a reliable painting contractor that did an excellent job painting our house, and found another crew to refinish our kitchen cabinets. We are very pleased and will definitely hire R Shields Construction for our next project(s)! --Dana Box and Lucy Dolman, Sand Springs, Oklahoma

Clere Enterprise Group did several jobs for us that have improved our home considerably. Years ago they put vinyl siding on my house which improved the look and my savings on utility bills. Recently they installed new windows which vastly increased the quietness from outdoor noise and also helped to level out cost of my utilities. They did such a good job on the windows, I had them install a new front door and storm door. The windows and doors were ordered from All American Building Products. I also had them install pull out drawers in my kitchen to replace kitchen shelves making it easier for me to get to my pots and pans. Each job was done in the time that was stated and done very efficiently. Clere Enterprise Group is a stellar company and all their work has been professional, and of excellent quality, they are very friendly and answer every question that I ever had. I am very happy with the work that they did, their prices were very reasonable and I would hire them again in the future. I would highly recommend them to any and all who ask.

Big Box Hardware's installer told me that my countertops would have to be cut, or my tile floor would have to be taken up, in order to get my old dishwasher out and the new one in. Chance came in and accomplished the task with no damage to my kitchen at all. I was so pleased with his perseverance and focus on getting the job done.

I hired Chris Whitestone (Two Feathers Construction, LLC) to repair a number of things around my house and to build shelves for my file boxes. He did everything from remodeling my kitchen to exterminating the carpenter bees that has taken up residence in my house's eaves. While restoring a section of my fence, he encountered a significant amount of water that had pooled under the house. He tackled the job professionally. He pumped out a huge amount of water until the hole was dry, then poured cement around the fence post and back-filled the hole. After three years, there is no sign of water in the area. He also put up a number of shelves of all sizes and shapes in my garage, utilizing all of the available wall space. In my kitchen, he rebuilt some of the cabinets, refinished all of the cabinet doors and walls, and installed a new cabinet, a vent hood, and a dishwasher. Additionally, he designed and built 4 five-shelf units on coasters which hold 15 file boxes each. The boxes weigh about forty pounds apiece. Although the shelves are built for strength, they are also very attractive. I found that he could design and build or install just about anything I needed. I was quite impressed with the quality of his work.

I would highly recommend Reed's Remodel & Repair for your home improvement projects. They have recently completed several projects for my Mom, including renovating the kitchen - they repainted the room and installed new cabinets, backsplash, counter tops, flooring, lighting, blinds, ceiling fan and put in a new kitchen sink. In the living room, they installed new flooring, a new front door and took out the sliding glass door to the patio and replaced it with beautiful french doors. Finally, they installed new a toilet fixture in the bathroom. They performed the renovations in a highly efficient, professional manner at a very reasonable rate. Great job and I will definitely use them again and refer them to friends/family!!!

Jerry and his crew do great work. They are always on time and never leave a mess behind. They tiled our two showers, did subway tile backsplash in kitchen, hung interior doors, and put shiplap on our ceilings. Amazing quality and they know how to get the job done whatever you may be needing at an affordable price.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to tile a shower?

The cost of tiling a shower depends on two main factors: the size of the shower and the quality of the tiles. In general, most professional tilers charge an average of $25 per square foot of tiled area and the national average cost for a tile installation project is $490-$750. The tiles themselves are the greatest variable; the cost depends on their size, shape, pattern and manufacturer. For example, tile purchased at a volume discount from a big-box store cost far less than tiles made in small batches by an artisan ceramics shop. Prices can range from as little as $1 to $50 or more per square foot of tile. Other factors that will drive up the total tile installation cost are grout and mortar, speciality tiles like bullnose caps or soap holders, and surface prep materials, especially if drywall needs to be replaced before the tile can be installed. Many tile installers will also remove and haul away any old materials from an existing shower installation.

How much does it cost to tile a bathroom?

Tile installation costs are a key part of your bathroom remodel costs. The tile you select (which can range from under $2 per square foot to $50 per square foot or more), the demolition and repair work required prior to installation, and the size of the job will all affect cost. You can install tile in the shower, on the counters, on the wall or on the floor. The national average for tile installation cost ranges between $490 and $750. Bathroom tile is easy to clean and durable for daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom tile installation costs:

    • Tile installation at $25 per square foot of tiled bathroom area.
      • A standard tub and shower combo requires tiles for approximately 60 inches of length. Calculate wall height and add 30 to 36 inches of tub width for the walls at the head and foot of the tub. If the tile walls are 6 feet to 8 feet high, in this example, the tile installation costs would run about $2,000. Price includes materials.
    • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with an 8-foot ceiling: $1,450. Price includes materials.
    • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with a 10-foot ceiling: $1,650. Price includes materials.

How much does it cost to install a ceramic tile floor?

Tile installation costs for ceramic floors depend on the type of tile you select. You can purchase tile that sells for under $2 per square foot or tile that costs $50 per square foot — or more for artisanal and hand-painted tiles. The cost of labor to install a tile floor will also depend on the tile you select. It is far less labor-intensive to install a white 12-inch by 12-inch square tile than a 2-inch by 2-inch hexagonal tile with a distinct pattern. That extra time and energy equates to a higher per-square-foot installation cost. For example, a flooring pro may charge approximately $3.50 per square foot for labor to install wood-look tile in an area ranging between 6 feet by 24 feet and 8 feet by 48 feet. That same pro may charge $6 or more per square foot for a more intricate pattern, or a smaller space. Some installers may charge a minimum day rate for ceramic tile floor installation, such as $340 minimum per day, to cover business expenses and employee wages. If you’re looking to reduce costs, removing your existing flooring and handling any repairs needed can help eliminate prep work costs. Prep work may be charged per hour and could cost anywhere from $25 to $80 per hour or more, depending on the region and the type of repair work necessary.

How much does it cost to get tiling done?

You can install tiling on your floors, walls, counters, kitchen backsplash, outdoor patio and shower — to name a few places. Tile is beautiful, easy to clean, durable, and resilient against kids and pets. The national average for tile installation cost ranges between $490 and $750. Often, tile installation specialists quote a price per square foot for installation. Costs can increase if you want the pro to supply the tile instead of ordering it yourself. Other factors that can increase cost include specialized installation with a unique design that will require more labor to install.

Prep work will also affect tile installation costs. Demolition of the existing floor, counter or backsplash takes time and energy that will be reflected in the price. Necessary repairs, such as a sub-floor that needs bolstering before tile flooring can be installed, will also increase costs. For tile showers, one example of tile installation cost may be approximately $25 per square foot including all materials and labor. Average tile installation costs for backsplashes may run anywhere from $10 to $40, depending on the materials selected and the amount of labor required. The larger the area where tile is being installed, the lower the price per square foot will likely be. For example, a flooring pro may charge approximately $3.50 per square foot for wood-look tile installation in an area ranging between 6 feet by 24 feet and 8 feet by 48 feet.

How much does it cost to install tiles in a kitchen?

One of the most common kitchen upgrades is installing decorative backsplash tiles in the space between the counters and cabinets. It’s a chance for homeowners to get creative while also protecting the kitchen walls from splashes and stains. Like all tiling projects, kitchen tile project costs depend on the tiles you choose, installation materials such as grout and mortar, and any surface materials, like replacement backer board. The national average for a tiled kitchen backsplash is $490-$750. In general, pricing averages $10-$40 per square foot for installation, not including tile. Some professional tile installers have a minimum day rate for small projects, which averages $350.
