Zeev was a very nice guy to work with. I had him install a light and dimmer switch in my living room and all turned out good. I'll most likely be bringing him back to the house for future projects.

Tim did a great job repairing a hole in the drywall in our dining area. His pricing was reasonable and he was very accommodating with my schedule. The repair was done quickly and blends in nicely with the rest of the wall. If you're looking for someone professional and reliable, Tim is your guy!

LENO was great. Very professional. Was always on time or if time changed he would communicate ahead. He cleaned up at the end of each day. When he finished the drywall he polished my floor. I will be using him again next month.

Darwin, Tony, and Vicky are wonderful to work with. Tony and Darwin painted my condo and after doing the final walk through, I could not find a single thing to complain about. The color I chose was very light, and they ended up having to do 3 coats instead of 2 which made the project go a bit longer than expected. My only complaint is that I also had drywall repairs that needed to be done, and the person they had doing the drywall work was not professional/clean. I ended up spending several hours after he left cleaning up the mess he made; also, since he cut corners by not removing shelving prior to fixing the drywall, it caused even more work because the painters had to fix the mistakes he made. I would definitely use Diaz painting again, but probably not to fix drywall in the future. THank you Darwin and team!

I truly can't speak highly enough about Jose's work with us on a last minute, high pressure drywalling project this week. I contacted Jose through Thumbtack once I realized we wouldn't be able to finish in time, and Jose truly saved us from closing for another work day and canceling over 20 appointments in the process. He was very quick and clearly an expert in the process of hanging drywall. He's very "let's get to it" about his work and doesn't waste time talking or otherwise fussing around. He saved us big time. Next time, we will just hire Leftcoast to do the drywalling instead of messing around with it ourselves. Thank you Jose!

Paul did a great job patching drywall and painting where a heat pump had been removed, another place where there had been water damage, and a small seam separation in a soffit. He made it all disappear and blend in with the rest of the room. He was very professional and pleasant to work with. He came out the day after Clearview Painting was selected for the job and was finished within two days. We recommend him highly. Some before and after photos attached.

Start to Finish Construction remodeled our daylight basement after a very bad flood situation. They removed and hauled away all the damaged carpet and drywall. All new drywall was installed along with all new wood trim, carpeting and vinyl flooring. We were very happy with the end result and Chad added some very nice touches to the trim work at no extra charge. We had one small issue that was resolved very promptly. I would use them again without hesitation!

Jose gave me a bid in he morning and was able to start work that day. The job was to install drywall around switches, built-in shelves, and a junction box -- it was complex. He did good work. When I asked him questions, I appreciated his thorough, knowledgeable answers.

Ashley and Luis are a great team and working with them was so easy! My husband and I bought a house and were planning on painting a lot of it before we moved in, but a quarter of the way through, I got really sick, so we needed some help. Ashley was so quick to respond and Luis started work the next day and finished within 3 days (we had a lot of painting) and the quality was what I was hoping for! I’m so thrilled with the outcome and with how easy they were to work with! I would hire them again in a second!

Working with Geoff and his guys was a great experience! Our project consisted of finishing 2 bedrooms, including drywall, texturing, painting, flooring, and carpentry work. Geoff was able to take our ideas and make them happen in our allotted timeframe, as well as providing valuable insight that really made our project a success. Communication was great too, we were always in the loop. Overall, cant say enough good things about working with Geoff. Will look to him again for future projects!

John and his son arrived on time and performed the expected work with a nice result. John is a good communicator and a great guy. I am pleased with the results, enough so that I consulted with him on another drywall-related job I have, and hired him to do that as well. I expect it will turn out as good as this job.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

If you have a hole in your wall, don’t despair; drywall repair professionals can patch the hole and repaint the surface and no one will be the wiser. The cost to repair a drywall hole depends on the size of the surface area of the damage, the materials and labor required, and (for a minor repair) any minimum service fee the repair company may charge. The actual labor and drywall prices may be lower than the minimum service fee, but pros must ensure their business overhead costs are met when they go out on minor jobs. To help keep costs low once the pros get there, make sure you have the right paint on hand if you want them to do to a touch up after the repair is complete, so you don’t keep them wait (and charging you for their time) while you search in the garage. Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs:

  • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
  • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

People sometimes use the terms “sheetrock” and “drywall” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Drywall is the industry term for prefabricated sheets of wall, while Sheetrock is the brand name of a type of drywall. Depending on what room is being built, your drywall installation pro will select different thicknesses or grades of drywall. Standard residential drywall is ½-inch thick. Garage walls adjacent to a living space are typically ⅝-inch thick and serve as a firewall. For a garage ceiling, most contractors will use firewall-grade drywall materials to keep your home as safe as possible.

Different types of drywall can be color-coded to indicate their purpose. Purple or green drywall boards are often mold-resistant (MR) and are applied where moisture tends to accumulate, such as in bathrooms and basements or behind tile backsplashes at sinks. These mold-resistant sheets have a fiberglass instead of a paper facing finish to prevent water absorption. Regular drywall is gray or white. The drywall industry is constantly adapting with technology to provide safer and more targeted materials. You can even install soundproofing drywall to help prevent noise transfer through rooms.

How much does it cost to put up drywall?

The national average cost to hire a drywall installation professional ranges $375-$1,500, depending on the job at hand and where you are in the country. Your drywall installation cost will often be lower if the professional is installing the drywall in a new construction with open access as opposed to a remodel. The square footage of the job, the amount of materials, and the labor required also determine drywall prices. According to drywall pros, materials costs can range from 15 percent to 50 percent of your total project cost, depending on the work you’re having done. Request several quotes from drywall installation companies to find the right fit for your construction project. The quotes may be based on the company’s standard cost per square foot or a calculation of the time estimated to complete the job plus the size of the job plus materials and any travel fees. For example, drywall installation for one or two standard-size rooms could cost $900-$1,500. The cost to hang and tape an outbuilding with approximately 40 drywall sheets at 75 cents per square foot could total $1,450, including 3.75 days of labor for the drywall crew.

How much does it cost to repair drywall?

The national average price range to repair drywall is $210-$300. Drywall prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the hole or crack that needs repair, the amount of materials required, and other factors. Cracks can appear at the seams in your drywall due to uncontrollable factors like your house settling or even minor earthquakes. Drywall, although sturdy, will break with enough impact, so if a dresser falls and crashes into a wall or your have a mishap hammering in nails for artwork, you could need drywall repair. Drywall repair professionals may have a minimum service fee of $100-$150 regardless of the size of the job. This ensures that their business expenses are met anytime they send their crew out to a job. Here are some additional examples of average drywall repair prices:

  • Sand and texture five wall patches: $200 (45 minutes of labor and $40 of materials).
  • Repair a 4x8 section of wall: $225 (labor $150 and materials $75).
  • Replace drywall in an entire bedroom: $1,500 (price varies depending on the number of windows, whether there’s metal trim, etc.).
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
