- What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
The most important consideration when looking for a counselor is whether you are comfortable relating to that person. If at all possible it's best to meet face to face so you can get a feel for how the relationship might develop. Do you feel safe? Do you feel listened to? Understood? Is the counselor open about the process of counseling? Is the counselor willing to ask about what works or doesn't work for you? Is the counselor willing and able to be present with you in order to develop a true collaborative and therapeutic relationship? In the end it is the relationship that promotes healing no matter what therapeutic approach is used.
