Alex has been tutoring my 9th Grade daughter since the beginning of the year. He has complete familiarity with the High School syllabus, and is happy to liaise with her math teacher, I find him always very professional. He has built up a great rapport with her, and she certainly enjoys his relaxed, positive approach.

I'm so glad I reached out to Guide on the Side for help with my two teens! I'll admit up front that I'm a rather "picky" mom--I have high expectations and I'm careful about who I allow my kids to spend time with. Ms. Karmiller did not disappoint!  All of our interactions were professional and so, so supportive. Ms. Karmiller is a compassionate, patient teacher, Her developmental and educational expertise is evident. After spending a little time with each child, she seemed to have an intuitive feel for how to best tackle each child's unique needs.  She clearly has a knack for developing supportive and instructional relationships with children. Both of my children felt cared for and respected. Their time with her was "fun" and did not seem like work, even though they got a lot done. One teen was struggling with a high school AP class, and over a period of several months, Ms. Karmiller provided direct tutoring as well as instruction on specific study strategies tailored to my child's learning style. That child raised her class grade by two letter grades! It is such a joy to see her feeling more independent and confident now. I think she's even got the courage to try other AP classes in the future.  My other child needed assistance during the transition between high school and college. Ms. Karmiller provided life skills training (guidance on financial budgeting and developing routines) and job search assistance (resume building, job applications, and networking/interview coaching). These are things I'd normally try to help my child with myself, but as is typical of this age, the child wanted to be independent and do these things by himself. It was a great comfort to me as a parent to know that he had another trusted, knowledgeable adult to turn to with questions. He got to feel independent, and I got the security of knowing my child was adapting well during the transition. In addition to meeting with him as scheduled, Ms. Karmiller went above and beyond, checking in with him regularly to inquire about his progress. She also updated me so I stayed "in the loop." I highly recommend Guide on the Side to other parents who want to help their children with school or emerging adult skills.

Terri is a fantastic tutor. My son was struggling in math. He had a D. Within two weeks his grade drastically improved. My son feels more confident and rather than reviewing math, he is able to get a head start on his lessons and be prepared. She has been a God sent.

She helped my daughter with algebra 2, well she was home bound, with all the material she was missing from not being at school. She was always very responsive when we needed her and was very flexible with us on meeting times. Would use her again if ever needed in the future.

Dr. Judkins is an excellent teacher. Only after a few lessons with him, my son had a significant improvement in ACT reading, from 19 questions wrong to 2 questions wrong in official practice tests. We are looking forward to seeing other big improvements in his future college level lessons with Dr. Judkins.

Beth has been my English tutor last 4.5yrs, and I got nothing but praise for her. Beth is dedicated, punctual and hardworking. She tailors materials for each student and never had a moment I felt like I was not learning. I have moved to East Coast a half year ago but I continued getting her lessons via video chat, and can’t be happier to have not just a tutor who’s always there for me but also a great dear friend. If you need the best tutor to learn English, I think you found one here.

Impact has been tutoring my daughter for 3 years now. My daughter has struggled with multiple subjects. Impact has had tutors who have helped her gain confidence, increase her organization, self esteem, and last but not least, her grades. Impact has been in constant contact with her teachers to make sure they knew where she was at and have lessons ready for her when she comes with no homework. They pin point trouble areas and make sure she has all the basic concepts before moving on. Yes she has moved through tutors, but it has been 3 years. She has loved each of her tutors and we both love that she can have tutors that grow with her. They teach basic reading through advanced history, calculus, and sciences. I have had three of my children go here and my next will be there too. Best investment for my children's education and their future. -Suxueling

Elissa is excellent with my 14-year-old granddaughter who had become discouraged with her online high school French class. Elissa is encouraging, tells interesting stories, is very attentive, is firm and helps move along with the lessons. I see the excitement in my granddaughter, she looks forward to going to the tutoring sessions.

Anne immediately responded to all my inquiries and was the only math tutor, out of dozens that could accommodate my sons needs for an emergency tutoring session, that was urgently needed for his circumstances. She was able to commit 2 hours a day for 4 consecutive mornings within a day's notice! She was on time each and everytime, and my son went from totally being behind and lost in math to finally telling me, "mom!!! I love Anne! She helped me so much and is such an awesome teacher!" With my sons feedback and proof that Anne had helped my son finally pass all his assignments online, I knew I found the perfect tutor, and decided to hire Anne for ongoing tutoring twice a week! What set Anne apart from all my other inquires was her prompt responses to my questions, willingness to work with my schedule, reasonable hourly rate, ability to help my son in the level of math he was struggling with. I highly recommend any parent who is looking for a professional, kind, knowledgeable, prompt and committed math tutor for their high school child to first contact Anne with your tutoring needs cuz you will not need to look any further and can save hours in emailing, calling and messaging around for an available math tutor! I am happy to say that after 4 consecutive days of having Anne come to our home for tutoring and the feedback I received From my son, that our family has decided to permanently hire Anne for ongoing tutoring for the remainder of my sons time in high school! Thank you so much Anne for your commitment in helping my son and for being such a wonderfully kind and patient person and for successfully following through with our urgent 6 day deadline of catching my son up in his behind work! You did exactly what you promised you could do and even more! I want you to know that if it were not for your help that my sons high school golf career would of been over! Sincerely Grateful!!! Jennifer in Happy Valley,AND FAMILY!!!

After our one on one interview with Joey, we knew right away Joey would be a perfect fit to work with my son on SAT prep. We found Joey to be very professional, trustworthy, persistence, caring, smart, and very pleasant to talk to and work with. The system/program that Joey used to work with my son worked well and very thorough, it is tailored to my son’s needs. By the end of the program, my son picked up so many helpful skills working with Joey, for examples, reading comprehension which my son really struggled with for the longest time and strategies on tests taking that he can applied in school. My son’s SAT score has improved significantly by over 130 points working with Joey over a short period, that put him in the 90 percentiles. Additionally, not only Joey worked with my son on SAT prep, he was also a good mentor and really motivated my son to do well and recognized my son’s potentials. More importantly, my son gained more confidence and less anxiety going into the real test. On that note, I highly recommended Joey to any parents who is looking for someone to work with their child with SAT help or simply want to boost SAT scores to attracts those Ivy League schools and more scholarships! I was very pleased with Joey. Andrea

I am Robert Reiss, a current 8th grade student taking Russian tutoring lessons with Elena Gregerson, and have been taking lessons since the 6th grade. Before that, she was my 5th grade teacher, at Clinton Kelly Elementary School. For the three years that I have been taking Russian tutoring lessons with her, I have made much progress in several areas I was struggling in such as grammatics, pronunciation and spelling. Every time we have a lesson, she always has a plan or goal about what we are going to work on, and we always accomplish what we plan.

I’ve known Tyler more than 13 years; we were colleagues at Centennial Park School, and I had the privilege of observing and collaborating with him as he provided outstanding services to students of all ages, abilities and temperaments. When I left to start my own business last year, I invited Tyler to join me, even on a part-time basis, and the response from the mother of a student he tutored in AP Physics says it all. She texted after their first meeting, “Tyler is PERFECT.” The student, who had been failing the class, went on to get a B on the final exam, and attributes his success entirely to the work they did together. Tyler has a particular gift for making math and science accessible, and for allaying the fear that often accompanies these subjects. I recommend him most highly.

I decided to go back to school recently and she has helped me with math. I'm okay at math but never bothered with it much after high school, however she was able to make it fun and teachable. She also helped me with my resume and I went from maybe getting call backs, to getting more emails than I can really handle. It's awesome!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

      • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
      • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
      • National average cost for a geometry home tutor: $50-$60 per hour.
      • National average cost for a math home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
      • National average cost for reading and writing home tutor: $40-$60 per hour.
      • National average cost for an SAT home tutor: $70 per hour.
      • National average cost for an ACT home tutor: $70-$100 per hour.
