We used Thumbtack.com to find fence contractors in our area. After going through about eight responses from Thumbtack we narrowed it down to three. After reviewing each of their website reviews and pictures. We then had each contractor come out on different days and give us a free written bid. We wanted a one sided top rail cedar fence 154ft plus two gates. After meeting all contractors and receiving their bids it came down to two contractors that were really close $$$. We choose A&C Innovative Contractors, John Chambers company for our fence job. We just got the best vibs from him and he accepted our input with-out exception. They started on the promised start date and finished in the five work days John had indicated on the contract. They hauled all the discarded materials, old fence, tree branches and shrubs away and left the backyard very clean. We are very happy with our newly installed fence and gates and John and his crews work ethics. Thank You John, Brian, RJ and Ben. Bob & Elise Firth Tualatin

We had them do a partial chain link fence and cedar fence. They did a great job letting us know how the job was going as well as the finished product. Will use them again for our fencing needs and I definitely recommend them five stars.

Daniel Ciobanu provided an excellent finished product for our backyard fence. It turned out much better than we could imagine. The craftmanship was far above what we expected. He communicated well at all times, was prompt in meeting construction schedules, reliable, and provided an excellent and very reasonable cost. We would recommend Daniel highly because of his work quality, professionalism, responsiveness, value, and punctuality. 5 stars are earned.

High marks on construction of the fence, very well built and will last a long time. I did feel like I had to micro-manage a little bit, but maybe I'm just picky. Two complaints: 1) they said they could stain to match my existing fence, but after startling the work said it would be tough... of course I just rolled with it and now I notice it every time I see it. 2) asking to be paid 1/2 up front, then again 3/4 through, then final when done... feel like 1/2 and 1/2 is good enough. Otherwise great!

From start to finish, Fernando and the team were top notch. They not only painted the house, but kindly fit in the deck and fence when I asked last minute. I appreciated the detail walk through Fernando gave before, during, and after the project. The team was very clean and tidy throughout. Very nice people, highly recommend.

Our project request was to install a closet organizer. As Lloyd worked on the project, it was clear it was not that simple. I really appreciated Lloyd's recommendations and initiative to ensure our closet remodel was as complete and finished-looking as possible. It turns out our closet is non-standard in size and he was instrumental in suggesting how we would modify the system to fit, look great and be most functional. He also removed and replaced molding around the opening and stayed until the job was complete. In the spring when we have some fence and pergola projects to tackle, we will reach out to Lloyd first.

I was very pleased with Logans work and time frame. He allowed me to help in order to save cost. Logan had a lot of respect for the purpose of the repair/renew of my sons fence. He also taught me the value and the meaning in building a fence. So, later down the road I xan do the same for myself and others. Thank you for being a good person with a good heart.

We initially called Brad for some basic household repairs and interior paint while getting ready to sell our home. Luckily, we pointed out a small crack in the drywall, and upon closer inspection it was found to be squishy (yikes!) leading us to pull back the baseboard and discover mold running the length of the wall. The roof gutter had been built into the exterior siding and had been leaking into the wall for years. If Brad's team had not discovered this and made it an immediate priority to repair, it could have impacted the sale of the house and possibly led to future lawsuits against us from the eventual buyer. Thanks to A1 acting quickly, our gutter/siding/interior wall problem got all fixed up, the new paint and carpet look great and the house sold within days of the work being completed. What could have delayed the sale for months only took a couple of weeks to remedy. Thank you Brad and team! We recommend A1, and we will be calling them to help us fix up our new house too.

We met with several people about staining our fence, and were very impressed with Duane. He was one of the few people who came out prepared with a measuring wheel to measure the fence himself, he had his license number on the quote, and he seemed to really know what he was talking about. We were so impressed with Duane that we asked him to come out and stain our front porch as well. He seems to have knowledge well beyond painting, so I intend to keep his information on hand. I feel confident that when he agrees to take on a project he won't settle for anything less than doing a phenomenal job.

Travis and his team did a pretty good job on our fence. The staff was respectable and nice. They asked a lot of questions etc around work which I preferred. The fence turned out exactly as I had asked for but required close monitoring via communication. They were timely and affordable...and while the quality of the work might not a 5 star...for what they did, it was a fair price. I would work with this team again. I had quotes for our fence from at least 9 contractors...and only All Backyard Construction and another quoted me this low. You are getting decent quality work for a good price. I would recommend them to friends and family...and I just recommended them to a colleague as we speak.

I'm not sure where to start. You have to wow me to get a five star review, and Pro Fence way more than wowed me. Very prompt, surprisingly efficient, unbelievably quick, and extremely well-built. I am absolutely positive who I'm calling next time I need a fencing contractor, and I would highly recommend Pro Fence to anybody looking to have a fence built.

Mike was the first to respond to a Thumbtack site post and explained that while his business is yard work, he's expanding into fences and decks. He visited to take a look at the work and measure before providing an estimate, which was about the same as an earlier amount I'd received. He's been terrific in communicating throughout. I knew I wanted the entire, decrepit fence replaced but didn't have a grasp of all the details that entailed. Mike made sure to talk through the process and various issues with me, making sure I approved or incorporated my changes. He explained flexibility on post spacing helped - instead of gunning for even spacing, I was fine with offsets from the existing bases so it saved effort to just cut the old ones at ground line. Like any battle plan, there were surprises that led to changes but Mike checked with me as we went along and made sure I was comfortable with what his crew did. The only detail I wasn't completely satisfied with was more my fault for not being clear, on the post foundation concrete top level. But I got the fence I wanted with a contractor who was wonderful to interact with - Mike and his crew did a great deal of work in a short amount of time. And the fence looks great!

Very nice young men who were prompt at getting the job done in two days. We were very happy with the work they did building gates at either side of our house. Nice work matching up with neighbors fence that one side abutted up to.

Julian and Julio (Father and Son) Were very professional and courteous. They delivered quality work and in the time they said they would. They were very clear and thorough explaining our options and each step of the process. They took out our old concrete in our driveway and installed new concrete and looks smoother and better than ever. They also replaced our backyard fence and also delivered exceptional work there. We couldn't be anymore satisfied with the work provided by Cornejo's Concrete & Fencing - I will definitely recommend them to any family and friends! - Pete and Julissa Stevens

We had David trim out some windows on a stucco exterior that had been installed previously. He did a nice job installing them and painted them all to match. In addition David installed interior lights in our house and he also did some work staining the fence out back. Very happy, would recommend him for further projects.

When talking to contractors about our remodel, I was overwhelmed. That is, until I found Surfaces NW. I used them to get a new roof, insulation, fence, deck, paint for interior/exterior, as well as a remodel for both of my bathrooms and kitchen! We are in love with our place, and feel like we have a brand new house!!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much is a redwood fence per foot?

A redwood fence is a long-lasting home investment that can add beauty and major curb appeal to your home. Redwood fence installation costs are higher than those for pressure-treated pine or cedar, due to the relative scarcity of the wood. Pricing can vary for redwood fence installation costs based on regional labor rates, current prices of redwood planks, the height and linear feet of the fence, and any custom designs or features. Redwood fences, in addition to being beautiful, are naturally more resistant against bugs and rot than less hardy or dense woods. Redwood fences also generally fare well in wet or humid climates due to their natural oils — which also make them easier to maintain. Materials costs per linear foot for redwood planks can range anywhere from $6 to $20 or more, depending on grade, quality and height.

How much does it cost to put up a chain-link fence?

Chain-link fence is one of the most affordable options for adding safety and value to your home or business. The national average chain-link fence installation cost is $2,750. Chain-link fences are relatively simple for the pros to install; a fence of less than 150 linear feet can often be put up in under one day. A good rule of thumb is to add an additional workday for each additional 100 linear feet of fence to be installed.

Chain-link fence installation costs are affected by the fluctuating cost of steel, regional labor rates, the height of fence you select, and the features you select, such as a powder-coated finish. The industry standard is galvanized steel, which is rust- and corrosion-resistant. Galvanized chain-link fence installation cost, including labor and materials, is typically $12 per linear foot. For a more contemporary and elegant option, black powder-coated galvanized chain-link fence might cost approximately $15 per linear foot on average, including materials and labor. For industrial sites or businesses, 10-foot-high galvanized chain-link fences may provide additional security, but also have an added cost. A 10-foot-high chain-link fence could cost $17-$18 per linear foot, including labor and materials.

How much does it cost to install a vinyl fence?

A new fence can mean added home value, increased curb appeal, and improved home security. The national average vinyl fence installation cost is $4,600. Vinyl fences have a number of appealing qualities such as their durability, their lasting good looks (they don’t weather like wood does), their versatility, and the fact that they require little to no maintenance such as staining. Fencing companies typically charge per linear foot for vinyl fence installation. They calculate their estimates based on materials to be used, height of fence, linear feet of the proposed fence, and the accessibility of the terrain. If the workers need to level the land before work begins, your vinyl fence installation costs will probably increase. Vinyl fences are typically more expensive than wood or chain-link. For example, one company might charge $19-$22 per linear foot for a basic 6-foot vinyl privacy fence. Another company might charge $25-$35 per linear foot for standard vinyl fencing, while decorative fencing with custom detail could increase that cost to $50 per linear foot. For a 6-foot-high white vinyl privacy fence with two walk-through gates (plus demolition and disposal of the old fence), the cost of the total project could run $8,000. A 4-foot-high, 36-linear-foot white picket vinyl fence with one gate could cost $2,600.

How much does it cost to install a wood fence?

Help define your property line, protect your home and yard, and boost your curb appeal with a new wood fence. The national average for wood fence installation cost is $3,250. Wood fence installation costs will vary based on your geographic location, the type of wood you select, the height and style of wood fence you desire, and the condition of your property. Pressure-treated pine is a common and attractive choice that is usually resilient against rot and bugs. Cedar is another budget-friendly option that, although more expensive than pressure-treated pine, can be more affordable than redwood or teak. A wood fence requires maintenance to ensure its long-term health and beauty, so keep future staining and painting costs in mind when you’re calculating fence installation costs. Here are some examples of how height and material affect the approximate cost of wood fences:

    • 6-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence: $15-$17 per linear foot.
    • 4-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence: $13-$20 per linear foot.
    • Cedar fence: $18-$25 per linear foot.
    • 6-foot-high, double-sided (meaning both sides are uniform), pressure-treated pine fence with 6x6 posts: $25 per linear foot.
    • 12-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence with custom detailing: $75 per linear foot.
    • 6-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence with a custom lattice top: $30-$50 per linear foot.

How much does it cost to install a fence gate?

Adding a gate to your fence can be a practical way to provide access to a yard, work area or outdoor living space while ensuring safety and privacy. Gate installation costs will vary based on the gate material you select, the size of your gate, whether you install a fence at the same time, and any special features you’d like to add. Standard opening size for a single-wide gate is 4 feet; a double-wide gate is 8 feet. A small gate may be for decoration; a double-wide gate can be mounted on a rolling caster system to allow access for cars or wide loads. Here are some examples of average fence gate installation costs:

    • 4-foot, single-swing chain-link gate: $100 for materials and installation costs.
    • 28-foot wheeled chain-link gate on a caster system: $800-$1,000 for materials and installation costs.
    • 4-foot, single-swing wood gate: $75.
    • 8-foot double-wide wood gate: $150.
    • 4-foot white vinyl walk-through gate: $300–$400 for materials and installation costs.
    • 8-foot, double-wide white vinyl gate: about $800 for materials and installation costs.
    • White vinyl gate fence more than 8 feet wide: $1,200-$1,500 for materials and installation.
    • Arched black powder-coated aluminum pool gates: $175-$200 per gate.
