What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
When I establish a new client relationship I inform them at the outset what the workflow will be like, and I keep the lines of communication open throughout the process. My goal is to never make a client feel like I've dropped off the radar.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have advanced degrees in graphic design and writing/book publishing. My graphic design education was built on a fine arts foundation, and included some marketing basics. The writing/book publishing program included design, editing, marketing, and project management.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your service? If so, please share the details here.
Most of my services are rendered at $20-$35 per hour. These include: design, copy writing, marketing, web content strategy, manipulation of digital photography, etc.
There are a few things that are not necessarily my area of expertise that run between $45 and $55 per hour to cover any potential consultancy costs I might incur. These include: hand drawn illustration, web coding, ghost writing.
How did you get started doing this type of work?
I've been an 'arts and letters nerd' as long as I can remember, starting with making paint-by-numbers messes on my grandmother's kitchen table when I was eight. Graphic design seemed to be a clear path for me in the 90s, and book publishing was a no-brainer as a graduate field of study a decade later. I just love the work—plain and simple.
What types of customers have you worked with?
I've worked with entrepreneurs, print brokers, former employers in the printing industry, self-published authors, friends and family, even a frenemy or two. :)
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
I'm obligated to say that a potential client should try to look past the 'perception of value' when thinking about hiring me in particular. I know my rate is surprisingly low for someone with my experience, but it's only because I have low overhead. After over a decade of working and learning, I've gotten my operating costs down to a manageable level and can pass the savings on to my clients. I'm confident that anyone who works with me will find a very good value in my service.
