Prompt response, arrived exactly when he said he would. Very nice man and very conscientious about his work. He fixed a leak under my bathroom sink and also did a couple of other bathroom projects. He also replaced the front part of my shed door and put a metal piece (flashing) on the roof extension of my shed. His charge was reasonable and I am glad I hired him. I may use him again sometime.

I asked Chris Wilhelm of Compass Home Repair and Renovation to install a utility sink in my basement. I had recently done a renovation restoring a bedroom, bathroom suite along with adding a washer and dryer for a a tenant. I didn't think about a utility sink, as part of that renovation which is a useful thing to have for larger and dirty clean-up projects. I only had a sink. There was no drain, no spigot or faucets. He dropped by my home to get an idea of the job's specifics and returned a week later. Chris installed the sink with a few hiccups along the way (such as trying to figure out how to turn off the water--not his fault--the recent plumbing was unlike anything he'd ever encountered. The sink works beautifully, and he integrated it next to the washer/dryer without taking up any additional space in this storage area. Best of all is the hose attachment, which insures that hard-to-reach spaces can be reached without effort. I've already hired Chris to do some restoration of my porch steps, which is due to be done this Saturday.

John and the crew were easy to work with and extremely professional! Stayed almost exactly on budget and John was especially conscientious to find additional cost savings when possible without cutting corners. Communicated and problem solved well when the space presented several unexpected challenges. Very pleased with the overall outcome! We absolutely love our new bathroom!! Would definitely work with A&C Innovative Contractors again!

We were nervous about whether our decision to paint old kitchen cabinets would be worth the effort/money but we couldn't afford to get new cabinets. Eric was frank and authentic in giving us his professional feedback while considering our budget. The project turned out better than we could have ever imagined! We ended up having him paint our cabinets inside/out in white, install a quartz counter, sink, faucets, hardware all within our budget. He made a suggestion to raise the backsplash tile to the ceiling and the outcome really raised the "wow!" factor. It has been only 4 days since he finished and I've referred him twice already! Eric was respectful and professional. He is a go-getter and passionate about his work. He can be trusted on when he says he will be there and when a project will begin and end. He always responded to us quickly and tries very hard to please. He knows what he is doing and can give excellent advice on what looks good/not good. I recommend following his advice. We will be hiring him again to do our bathrooms next but I'm a bit worried that this review might make him too busy to be unavailable!

Jose and his team are great. We hired him to drywall our entire bathroom, and an interior bedroom wall including some areas of concrete backer board. He also textured and taped everything, as we weren't ready to try this overselves. Not only was his quick to respond, he was available within a week and completed the job in two days. Would absolutely hire Jose again when we plan on doing our next bathroom. Jose was reasonably priced and gave us a competitive bid. Thank you Jose.

We weren't sure what level of work the hardwood floors in our new house needed, but Viktor gave us a few options, and actually recommended one of the lower-cost options. We were clueless, and would have been willing to pay much more, luckily he was incredibly honest. We're very satisfied with the work that was completed; our floors look great! Also important to note - Viktor was very easy to communicate with via email, which was important to us as we have very busy schedules and can't always take the time to make a call.

I had a MDF kitchen sink door that needed replacing which had to exactly (or nearly so) match the OTHER ONE from the size to the stain itself. In order to reduce the price a bit I had to find the proper handles at a nearby hardware store, ones that would match the other kitchen cabinet handles in the entirety of the room (I ended up choosing ones that closely enough matched the others) and I had my new cabinet door just a week's time. At first I was unable to tell the difference between the two doors (the one he had to match and the one Ed made from scratch) and a carpenter who is building a house next to me was also unable to tell the difference. While I had no prior experience in having this type of project done I was a little surprised at the price of $300, but subsequent research found that this price was/is in the mid-range for this kind of project. I would highly recommend Ed to anyone who needs a smaller project done. Most if not all of the larger cabinet companies either were not interested or said I would have to wait at least a month for completion.

I hired Matt for several jobs around the house, including sheetrocking over old lathe and plaster in the kitchen; installing a new floor in the kitchen; painting walls in two rooms; cutting and installing baseboards in the kitchen; designing and building a large cabinet for the bathroom; and installing thresholds for two rooms. I found Matt to be extremely capable, on time, cleaned up after jobs, totally honest and reliable as well as a very pleasant person to have working in my home. He is creative and skilled. I am glad I found him and will call him back whenever I need help around the house. Highly recommended!!!

We hired John to build cabinets for a complete custom kitchen remodel project and two custom bathrooms. The cabinets are all solid plywood and finished in a beautiful figured walnut. John’s attention to detail is nothing short of stellar! He matched the grain patterns from the top cabinets to the bottom cabinets and all the trim was perfectly cut and installed. Our project was quite extensive and because of the very fine quality of work we even had John finish five custom solid core doors for us. From the doors, to the custom freestanding oven hood, it’s all top quality work! Needless to say, I would highly recommend him to anyone interested in artisan quality work! John is a true craftsman. David Yoo remodeled my kitchen and bathroom for me and finished my basement for rentals. I asked for granite counters and new cabinets installed in the kitchen and it turned out amazing! For my bathroom he took out my old fiberglass shower and I had him install a new stand up shower completely tiled along with a new vanity and built-in's. The basement got a full remodel including an egress window, beams and bathroom and kitchen. Everything turned out beautiful and he is very professional and knows what he is doing. I would recommend him to anyone looking to remodel their place or their rental units.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Do you tip cabinet installers?

In general, home service providers such as electricians, plumbers and contractors are professionals who don’t expect tips. They expect to do a job for you for the specific price they quoted. Of course, they may appreciate a tip for a job particularly well done or for which they’ve gone beyond what’s normally expected, such as completing the project early or under budget. Even better than a tip, it’s always appropriate to leave a positive review online after a good experience.

How much is custom cabinetry?

Custom cabinets can be built for any room, including bedroom closets and built-in armoires. Measured carefully and built precisely, custom cabinetry can increase storage and beautify any room. The national average for building custom cabinets ranges from $500 to $1,200 per linear foot. The cost is highly variable because there are so many styles, colors, glazes and other options. In general, the linear footage of the cabinets, the materials used to build them, and the cost of the labor will determine the cost. Solid wood costs more than plywood and wood veneer, and costs vary among different types of wood; maple and cherry cabinets are more expensive than pine. Glass-front cabinets can cost more, as can decorative hinges, handles and door pulls, which can cost $2-$45 each; choose carefully to stay within your budget and pull off the exact look you’re going for. Some carpenters also charge for installation, on average $100 per cabinet box. Additional molding and trim, such as crown molding at the ceiling, cost an average of $70 per 8-foot section, and adding finished ends to exposed cabinets averages $100-$200.

How much does it cost to have kitchen cabinets installed?

In any kitchen, the cabinets are the main focus, so you want to make sure new or replacement cabinets are installed correctly. A professional carpenter can properly, securely mount new cabinets to the wall; the national average cost for this service is $7,725, although the cost varies widely depending on the type of cabinets, their material and their size, and the accessories you add. A typical fee is $70 per linear foot to remove existing cabinets and assemble and install new ones; the cost is less if you do the demolition and removal yourself. Stock cabinets are the least expensive to have installed, ranging from $75 to $400 each; semi-custom cabinets range from $150 to $900 each; and custom cabinets cost from $500 to $1,400 each. Wood cabinets are more expensive than those made from plywood or medium-density fiberboard (MDF) and finished with a laminate. Wood cabinets range in cost from $80 to $160 per linear foot. Laminate-finished cabinets cost $35 to $75 per linear foot, on average.
