"I was scary finding an officiant for my daughter's wedding when their "friend" dropped out and couldn't do it. I was impressed with Tom's reviews and took the leap of faith to hire him. I am very pleased to say that the reviews are 100% accurate, Tom is very well spoken, easy to deal with, and helped the kids through their nervousness. I would recommend you hire him!"

"We had the privilege of having Reverend Jon Turino as the officiant for our wedding. Jon was very thorough in trying to find exactly what we wanted in our presentation as Mr. and Mrs. We wanted an elegant professional ceremony and that was exactly what he provided. He was very well dressed also and fit perfectly in our photos which was a big plus for us. Couldn't have asked for a better Officiant. Thank you Jon! - Mr. & Mrs. Eldred"

"Ernie did a fabulous job as officiant at our wedding. He was very considerate during our planning process, added some very good insights, and put together the perfect ceremony! At our wedding ceremony, he spoke clearly, sincerely and loud now for all to hear. I am very grateful that Ernie was our wedding officiant."

"Loretta was my wedding officiant for our wedding at Oaks Park in Sellwood, she was great from the very first impression. She wrote us a kind message, expressing interest in officiating our wedding, we met up for coffee to explain the type of ceremony we wanted and she was friendly, punctual and attentive. The months leading up to the ceremony she was available for communication about the vows and was quick and friendly with each interaction. The day of the wedding she was there early. The ceremony only took ten minutes or less, and she hung around patiently while tears were shed and hugs were given. Very sweet and personable woman, highly recommend Loretta for a fun wedding! "

"Don performed the wedding ceremony for my husband and I nine years ago in Portland, Oregon. At the time, neither of us belonged to a church and we weren't sure who was going to marry us. When my parents reminded me that Don was a pastor it was immediately settled that he would be our officiant! He made our wedding relaxed and fun. I always laugh when remembering that he asked my dad, "who presents this woman to this hunka hunk of burning love?" It was the perfect way to relax a nervous bride and groom. :) We had such a wonderful experience with Don that we would recommend him to anyone!"

"Pam officiated our wedding on 10/23/16 and she was wonderful! She was very easy to communicate with and we even had an in person meeting to help iron out details. They sent us a transcript with multiple options so we could make our ceremony exactly what we wanted. There was a change in the ceremony wording that my husband and I decided on and with all the craziness didn't tell Pam, but she made it work and we still said beautiful vows! Thank you!!"

"We are so happy we chose Reverend Rose as our wedding officiant. She was easy to communicate with and worked with us to create the perfect wedding ceremony. Our friends and family complimented us on choosing her to celebrate our day, and one of our groomsmen even said he wished he had Reverend Rose do his wedding! Could not recommend her more!"

"I was extremely nervous about finding an officiant for our wedding ceremony. Neither my husband or I knew much about the process and we're reluctant to find someone online with fairly short notice. Neither of us have a very religious background, so I was also worried about finding someone who would be able to provide vows that resonated with us as a couple. Cathi did an exceptional job at filing us in on the process as well as listening to what we were wanting. There was some miscommunication on the day we got married regarding the time (we were an hour off), but Cathi showed up on time and prepared (even considering her having a fairly long commute). She was extremely professional and helpful. A very genuine person. We would absolutely recommend Cathi to anyone who is looking into a wedding officiant. "

"Anthony Behrens was the officiant for our wedding. He was amazing! He sent us different types of vows we could go with or on how to create our own and even included a run through of how to perform the ceremony. Which really helped due to we didn't have enough time to do a rehearsal. When we needed to contact him, he was really prompt and returned our messages. He was also very accommodating and flexible with our busy schedule. Thank you for everything and your assistance with filing our marriage certificate. Highly recommend!"

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to officiate a wedding?

The national average cost to hire a wedding officiant is $150-$200. Wedding officiant rates are affected by the date of the ceremony, the time of day, and how far the officiant has to travel. Some officiants may charge extra for additional ceremonies like unity candles or sand ceremonies, as well as the cost of the supplies. Many wedding officiants have higher rates for larger weddings and lower rates for smaller, more intimate ceremonies. Personalizing the ceremony means a lot to some couples. Wedding officiants may have flat rates for standard ceremony templates, perhaps $100-$125, and charge more for a more customized experience, such as $150-$200. This allows the couple to collaborate with the wedding officiant as they are building a unique ceremony script. At the pre-wedding meeting, the officiant will ask whether the couple plans to write their own vows and how much input they have about the rest of the wording and flow of the ceremony. Additional planning meetings and extra communication can add up to a higher overall cost. If your venue has parking or other fees, you may need to pay on behalf of the officiant. Often wedding officiants can rent sound systems and wireless mics if you have an outdoor wedding location or venue that is not wired. These extras will also increase the overall cost.

What does it mean to officiate a wedding?

To officiate a wedding is to oversee the official union of two people in marriage. A wedding officiant is vested with the power to legitimize your union in the eyes of the court. An officiant also sets the tone for your ceremony, leading the couple through their vows and shaping the experience with the words they choose and the pace they set. An officiant may be based in a religious faith, may be an interfaith officiant, may be a secular officiant, or may be a friend or family member who has received ordination online.

You can have a traditional wedding officiated, or you can also have an officiant oversee a commitment ceremony, a vow renewal or an elopement. Once the wedding is complete, the officiant will ask you to sign the wedding certificate, and will then submit the document to the court on your behalf. This makes your marriage legal. Wedding officiants work with you no matter how simple or elaborate you would like your ceremony to be. The more involved wedding officiants are in the planning and customization of the ceremony, the more they will typically charge.

Who performs a wedding ceremony?

Anyone who is authorized by the court or a credible online source has the power to perform a wedding ceremony. Traditionally, wedding officiants were ordained members of a religious organization or civil officiants authorized by the court to legally marry two people. With the increasing customization and personalization of weddings, many couples are asking a friend or family member to become ordained and act as their wedding officiant. Wedding officiants can represent a wide range of backgrounds including Christian, Catholic, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, nondenominational, interfaith or nonreligious. There is no legally required structure for a wedding ceremony, so couples can customize the language of the ceremony and their vows in any way they desire (though members of some religions may have specific requirements). To legally validate the marriage, the couple and the wedding officiant must sign a marriage certificate after the ceremony verifying the date and names of those involved. The wedding officiant should then submit the certificate to the court, which will in turn mail an official marriage certificate to the newly married couple.
