I was able to make an appt within 2 days of my request for work. Zeev showed up on time and completed the work in a timely fashion, which included him taking a trip to the local Home Depot for materials. He repaired a leak/burst pipe above the garage ceiling and fixed my front yard faucet(handle broken off). The total cost for the repairs was more than reasonable, under $200. I would hire again.

Chris helped me assemble an outdoor basketball hoop. This isn’t his normal gig, but he worked in the rain and the cold to help me assemble it before my son’s birthday party. He did it at a minimal cost since he genuinely wanted to help me get it assembled before my son’s birthday party. We worked in the cold and rain past a couple of assembly challenges. I really appreciate Chris’s attitude and help. I would certainly recommend Chris for projects around the house!

My experience with John, and A&C Innovative Contractors, was easy and very satisfying. He was easy to reach by phone and returned all my calls in a reasonable amount of time. He started the job when promised. His ideas on the fence design were helpful and looked very, very good. Many people in the dance club, where he built the fence, have mentioned how much they like it. And, finally, his prices were very fair and he got the cost estimates to me very quickly. I would use him again. Steven B.

Tim is great. He got back to me quickly and was able to patch our drywall and texture and paint within a day. The materials required the cost of the work to raise from his initial quote but he was transparent and professional the whole time. I would hire him again.

I was very pleased with Logans work and time frame. He allowed me to help in order to save cost. Logan had a lot of respect for the purpose of the repair/renew of my sons fence. He also taught me the value and the meaning in building a fence. So, later down the road I xan do the same for myself and others. Thank you for being a good person with a good heart.

This review has been a long time coming. My wife and I bought a dump and slowly remodeled it over a few years. Then, I found out I got my dream job in Austin TX, and we had to sell our house FAST. Only one tiny problem - it wasn't finished! That's where Eric with Fresh Painting and Remodeling came in. Eric gave me a very reasonable estimate for installation/painting of baseboards throughout the entire house and installation/painting of a few interior doors. I'm far too exhausted to post pics, but suffice it to say the baseboards looked fantastic. Our house had 5 offers, all above asking price, within 60 hours of going on the market. I would say others thought Eric's work was good to say the least. In addition to fantastic finish carpentry work at a very reasonable price, Eric was especially courteous considering our 2 month old baby. Several times he went out of his way to help. For example, he completely finished the baseboards in our master bedroom first so that we would have a place to let our baby sleep. At one point, he even took 3 trips to the garage to recharge his air compressor just so that he wouldn't wake up the baby. I can only hope I find a contractor in TX that I trust this much to do good work at a reasonable price!

We just bought our first house and it had a brocade and popcorn ceiling in nearly every room of the house. I sent out a message via Thumbtack for getting the ceiling retextured and Jose was quick to respond. He gave a reasonable price estimate for the work that needed to be done. Jose and his team were so amazing! They did an amazing job on the ceiling and were so quick and efficient. We just painted the ceiling after they fixed it and it looks so good! I have no complaints at all! Also, Jose was really easy to communicate with and very quick to respond and schedule and complete the work with our tight schedule. Thank you!!

Best price out of four local contractors who submitted estimates, efficient crew, and appreciated ethics. Makaia was the only one of the four who recommended support rebar in our exposed aggregate patio extension and included it in his estimate. We chose his company for the job and are glad we did.

Jesus is a great contractor to work with, and I will recommend him to friends. He did everything right, from the estimate to the finished work. The intial contact, the estimate, the communication, the expectation, the delivery, and the final product were all excellent, if there were 6 stars, I'd give him another one.

This team was available last minute when my prior contractor called the day before a job saying he was running behind, which I am super grateful for. There are tiny little spots like a scratched tile which was installed in the middle of a wall and two little spots missing some grout but The overall quality and speed with which they completed the job was well worth the cost.

The contractor did not have a portfolio of past similar projects nor did he provide references I could contact. We finally came to an agreement as to how he would build my fence. His company contract was rather vague so I wrote out a more detailed one that he and I signed. It listed the specific points about the project that I felt were important, i.e. type of wood to use, heights, design, cleanup, etc. The contractor and crew were very cooperative during the construction. Whenever there were questions about how I wanted things to be done, we referred to my contract. I needed to leave town on the last day of their work. Since the work had gone well up to that point, I paid the contractor off and left him to finish up his work. When I returned a week later I was surprised to see that several of the details noted in my contract had not been completed. It has been three weeks since then and he has not returned to complete the small details nor to do a final review of his project. I can only guess that he felt rushed to complete my project and has been too busy to follow up. I will complete the final detail work myself. I have noticed that some of the fence wood has loosened up due to inadequate nailing. This was obviously done to reduce construction expense on the contractor's end. I have gone back and reinforced the wood with heavier screws. The fence is sturdier now. I would rate this contractor as a "good" builder, just not a "master" builder, due to the lack of detail work and lack of followup on the contract.

Joe De Marco landed in my life via Thumbtack, and what an amazing stroke of luck that was! I’d been debating making an offer on a house for sale, but it was going to need extensive remodeling before I could move in. And without knowing what was possible, or what the renovations might cost, I wasn’t sure what to offer on the house itself or if I could even afford everything I had in mind. Though I’ve owned two, I really know almost *nothing* about houses--and less about the actual work that contractors do. I was an easy mark, in other words, and Joe could have taken me right to the cleaners! Instead, at a time when other local contractors can’t even be bothered to answer their phone, Joe De Marco got back to me right away, spent 90 minutes at the house with me explaining every single detail, and had an estimate for me within 24 hours! And I didn’t even own the house, which means Joe did all that work pro bono. He came up with creative and affordable solutions to every problem I threw his way, and taught me an awful lot in the process. Ultimately, I decided not to buy the house, in large part because of what I learned through Joe. He could have lied to me and taken my life’s savings, and I’d have been none the wiser. But instead, he was honest and patient and down-to-earth, the kind of guy I know I can *trust*. And when I do find the right house, you can bet that Joe will be the first person--the only person--I call to help me with whatever work it might need. Diana Schutz Portland, Oregon

Starting out with the basics they showed up on time, did what I asked them and cleaned up afterwards. These are important aspects of a job that makes it much more pleasant. In addition, I needed them to build a cat ramp and they did a great job at designing and building a sturdy ramp that should last for years. I was happy with their work and I would recommend them.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

What do construction project managers do?

Construction project managers help in all stages of your construction project, starting from the very first step. Typically paid a percentage of a total project cost, they are part of the design and planning process and help ensure seamless communication between the design parties and the construction team. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, their scope of work includes preparing cost estimates, budgets and work timetables; interpreting and explaining contracts and technical information to other professionals; reporting work progress and budget to clients; collaborating with architects, engineers and other construction pros; selecting subcontractors and scheduling and coordinating their tasks; responding to work delays, emergencies and other problems; and ensuring compliance with legal requirements, building and safety codes, and other regulations.

The work of construction project managers may seem very similar to that of general contractors, but there are some critical differences. One difference is that, unlike most general contractors, project managers are not engaged in the actual construction — they are onsite overseeing the work of subcontractors. Another key difference is that project managers are hired during the design phase, while general contractors are hired after plans have been made. The project manager is generally paid a percentage of the total project cost, while the general contractor is more typically paid according to the bid they gave to build your project.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

How do I find out if a contractor is licensed?

It’s important to know if your project requires work by a licensed professional, as licensing laws can vary by state, locality, and job details. You can find general licensing information online at the government websites that handle occupational licensing for a given profession in your state or location. Some states designate a project cost over which you have to hire a licensed contractor. To find qualified licensed contractors, search your state’s licensing board. For example, in California, the Department of Consumer Affairs operates a searchable database through the Contractors State License Board. In some states, contracting licenses are provided at a regional level. You can find links to specific databases on BRB Publications’ Occupational Licensing page. Red flags that a contractor may not be licensed or may be providing an expired or false license number are unreasonably low bids or a request for complete payment upfront. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

When should you hire a contractor?

A few home remodeling projects can be done by an ambitious DIY-minded homeowner or local handyman, but many are best completed by a professional home renovation contractor. You should hire a contractor when you’re planning a large project that takes time, machinery or large tools, and several workers; a kitchen remodel, new bathroom or home addition will be most successful with a licensed, expert contractor at the helm. It’s particularly important to have a professional contractor on board for construction, electrical, plumbing and HVAC projects that require inspections to meet local building codes. Of course, you can hire a contractor for smaller projects, too, if you prefer to let an expert handle things like addition or removal of a wall, small framing projects, or anything that requires a permit.

You should hire a contractor when you’re ready to start a remodeling project and you have plans, a budget and a timeline for the work in hand, but before any remodeling work begins.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
