  • Relational Therapy

    (10 reviews)

The area of our lives in which we can learn the most about ourselves, and also the area which can be most problematic, is relationships. Relationships can be our greatest source of joy, and at the same time, our greatest source of pain. While most of us have a good deal of experience with relationships, we have very little education or knowledge about what comprises a healthy relationship. We've learned what we know about relationships on the fly, from our parents, peers, and trial and error, often unconscious of the forces which motivate us to choose our relationships or behave in certain ways in those relationships. Raised consciousness allows us to make conscious choices within our relationships and not be solely motivated by unconscious emotions, thoughts, and behavior. My master's degree in marital and family therapy, with its strong emphasis on addressing each client's unique problems within a relational context, gives me the tools needed to address whatever difficult issues you are facing. I would be more than happy to sit down and have a free first-time consultation with you to determine whether my services would best serve your needs. I take a very holistic approach to wellness, addressing my clients' physical, mental and emotional needs. We will address those emotional and relational issues which are holding you back from becoming the greatest manifestation of who you really are. My ultimate goal is for you to not need me anymore. Relational Therapy has been awarded a Thumbtack Best of 2015 Award for Counselors in Portland.

  • Sarah Ellenwood Counseling

    (2 reviews)

Counseling can be cool. You don't have to go through difficult times alone. By seeking help, you have already taken the first step toward making positive life changes. The next step is finding the right person to guide, motivate, and support you. I am a counselor with a healthy dose of optimism and realism. I love to work with my clients on problem solving, new skill building, processing emotions, and developing a greater understanding of themselves and the world around us. If you are looking for something "different" from your counselor, I may be a good fit. I work with clients on a variety of issues, including trauma, anxiety, depression, relationships, sexual issues, and life transitions. I offer a safe, non-judgmental counseling style, so you can always feel comfortable sharing your stories and struggles. I am trained in EFT (Emotionally Focused Therapy), which is a highly effective couples therapy technique based on attachment research. I also use psychodynamic, CBT, and marriage and family therapy treatment approaches. I also offer Walk the Talk Therapy (walking sessions), which you can learn more about via my website. I do counseling, mental health therapy, and psychotherapy. A note to GLBTQ (gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered, trans, queer, or questioning) clients: I am not only a GLBTQ-friendly therapist, but I am also GLBTQ-informed. If this is a component of treatment for you or part of who you are, get yourself a qualified help.

  • The Art of Balance, LLC

    (4 reviews)

The Art of Balance combines my passion for counseling and teaching yoga. I provide counseling in an office or outdoor setting, whichever you may be more comfortable with. Some people prefer the enclosed space and confidentiality of an office while others prefer to talk while they walk and enjoy the benefits of being outside in a natural setting. While I enjoy working with people of all ages, I specialize in working with youth and young adults, providing counseling to address a range of challenges: depression, anxiety, identity development, grief/loss, trauma symptoms, maintaining healthy relationships, difficult life transitions, etc. The counseling process can be challenging at times, and it can also be an enjoyable and creative experience. My role as a counselor is to provide a safe, comfortable, and accepting space that supports you in identifying your strengths and addressing the challenges life throws at you. I work with people through an integrative, humanistic, person-centered, and strengths-based approach; in other words, I draw from various philosophies to create an individualized plan that's customized to your unique needs. I am also a registered yoga teacher (RYT), which allows me to combine my counseling and yoga training to provide trauma-informed mindfulness-based support. I know from experience taking the first step to get support can be the most difficult. I offer a free 30-minute consultation by phone or in person, so you can decide if we are a good fit.

  • Relationship Gardening

    (4 reviews)

Do you wish you could stop the way your marriage is behaving when it makes you feel like disappearing? Do you hate the way your arguments trigger your claws to come out? Marriage repair for Oregonians and Californians is easy for me. With the best research in the world on couples (lesbian, gay or straight, engaged, or already married), I can show you tools to have the friendship and conversations you need to have with each other to better handle your conflict or regrettable incidents. Feel free to call me, or visit my website to see what kind of help for marriage I offer. Much good counseling information is here for you, but if you want to cut to the chase and check on openings, e-mail or call anytime. I am licensed in both Oregon as a licensed professional counselor (C2379), and California as a licensed marriage and family therapist (MFC34477). This means that Washington residents cannot use my services unless you are hiring me for a presentation. I say this here because every day, WA residents ask about this. Counselors are licensed for residents of the state the license is in. I do pretty fun presentations though, so you could get a group together at work or church for example, and hire me to show you the tools and answer your questions. Why get counseling for my marriage? Relationships (with mates, friends, and family) need specific kinds of nurturing, much like gardens. You wouldn't walk by a patch of soil in your yard, watch it grow wild without any tending, and expect an abundant vegetable garden. The same goes for the most precious people in your life; those connections wilt or grow based mostly on your communication habits, both the conflict and everyday variety. Remaining passive is not an option for a long-lasting love. Lack of daily positive action will get you divorced. Couples often visit me to get unstuck and revived, and find some relief in the very first session and then learn ways to keep on with the happily-ever-after. The habits of long-term, happy couples can be learned and can, with high probability, save you the misery of the breakdown of your relationship which frees you to focus on the purpose and dreams of your lives, and pursue the gift you were given to express in your own life. If you are suffering in your marriage now, grappling with betrayals, affairs or porn addiction, for example, there are steps we can take to get your relationship on a healing path. Why hire a specialist for your marriage in Portland, Oregon? Surveys of counselors show that nearly all do not know even the basics of helping couples, nor what is required to assist couples picking up the pieces after cheating. Get yourself to a couples' specialist! Likewise, for couples with mixed gender identity (where one spouse is coming out), you want to get the support of someone who can assist both of you in getting a grip. Fees and Schedule: How long does it take? What are the fees? Couples get every other week, nearly double sessions (so, expect about 1 and 1/2 hour appointments) and pay $40.00 per quarter hour. Discounts are available for those who need it. Couples get a thorough, private online assessment from the Gottman Institute at the start, so we can nail down specifically what you need to make your marriage the place you want to be, and also show you what it is exactly that you are doing to add to your marriage success. You will not need the old-school style of endless therapy that leads to divorce. When you use a Gottman Institute's (a.k.a. Relationship Research Institute) trained and licensed professional for your couples counseling, marriage counseling, or couples coaching in Portland, Oregon, you can get the tools you need in about six sessions for 3 months (sometimes less, sometimes more). Couples with infidelity (affairs) will likely need to go beyond the 6-session basics to get through the three phases of repairing trust at your own pace. Results: Results are not guaranteed; however, from the first session, you will learn new tools to practice in session and out on building your foundation of respect and friendship that allows conflict to draw you close, not drive you away. A lot of it from that point on will depend on whether or not you are motivated to spend time daily with your partner, using the tools and topics learned in counseling to grow the connection you dream of. You won't have to beat your head against the wall with this level of relationship coaching. You should feel results right away, that is, if you put the tools into practice out of the sessions. If you are not making the shifts you need to, then I will ask you to get individual therapy to address your unique challenges in support of the marriage repair. Conflict Strategies: Are you stuck in conflict or conflict avoiding? Learn to have the conflict conversation to bring you close instead of leaving you snarky. Couples can easily fall into a pattern of getting into a gridlock disagreement and not feeling like you are ever really understood. Later divorce path couples stuff and avoid their regrettable incidents and then say later they just "grew apart." I can help you move from the blame game, or avoidance into getting better at expressing what you need to and then understanding each other's vulnerabilities that make those easy triggers possible. I believe that we are each capable of living free, fulfilling and joyous lives. I also believe that human beings have an inherent tendency to seek balance, wholeness, love and health. I believe that the defining aspect of our lives is the quality of experience that we have, and that with understanding and mindfulness we can increase the quality of our experiences and the meaning we find therein. I believe that our lives are embedded within systems, and that there are fundamental patterns at play in our individual and collective lives. I provide individual and couples therapy, serving clients from 11 to 65. I'm classically trained in the usual client-centered, humanistic, cognitive-behavioral theories, and I'm quite skilled in them. 1. #1 Break Free Counseling

    (20 reviews)

    Shabnam R.

I was going through a rough time because of a recent break up with someone that I truly loved. I am an immigrant so had no close family here. It was really getting out of control and I decided to seek for some help. Dave helped me a lot to understand what is really bothering me. He provided a calm and relaxing environment that I could easily talk through my issues. I was feeling really terrible before the counseling but now I am feeling much better, I am a lot more stable and I know that I can go through this phase of my life.
