Jerry and his guys did a fantastic job at the wedding. They were on time, they were personable, professional, courteous and the food was fantastic. Keeping in mind that our wedding happened at the peak of catering season, it was, at times, difficult to get on the phone with him, probably because they are a great company and busy almost every day at this time. But that is literally the only thing overall that I could say was less than satisfactory. Every single other component of our interactions with him was simply perfect. Great guy, great food, and a great experience. I HIGHLY recommend recommend hiring That Food Guyfor any catering need that you may have. Well done Jerry! Thanks for making our day amazing!

Sandra was professional and easy to work with. She made good suggestions to round out our wedding catering menu. She set up and had all of her delicious food on the buffet tables just like we wanted.

I would highly recommend Rachel and Bake My Day for any catering and baking needs! We hired Rachel to prepare all meals for a 3 day yoga retreat for 10 people. From the beginning of the process through the weekend itself Rachel was nothing but professional, responsive, and accommodating. She worked with us to develop the menu based on our needs and guest preferences. The food quality and preparation was top notch. Everyone raved about the food, especially the desserts, inquired about the recipes, which she was happy to share, and fought over who got to take her home. She rolled with the punches of a fluid timeline and always had meals ready to go exactly when requested. She fit in great with our group and handled nonstop questions and people in and out of the kitchen with a smile and calm demeanor. Highly recommend!

She was very responsive to all forms of communication, and showed up on time on the day of the wedding and set up the cake and cupcakes which was great! My only issue was the decor of the cake and cupcakes. They were very cute/pretty, just some key details that we discussed for decorations was missed. I wanted a naked style cake with drip icing and my cake was all covered in frosting. And I also wanted some cupcakes with pink frosting, and they were all white. They tasted amazing and she was great, just missed some key details that I wanted for the wedding.

I had the pleasure of having my marriage proposal catered by Divine Catering. I utilized their drop off service for my event. They were prompt on arrival. Courteous during set up and collection. Communication was stellar throughout the full process. The food selection was amazing. All of our left overs were boxed up and placed in the fridge. The cost for service was very reasonable as well. I would absolutely recommend Divine Catering for catering service and will certainly utilize them in the near future!!!

Alison is a true professional! From the first Thumbtack contact to the event, she was extremely easy to work with. Sadly, I was unable to attend the actual event. But I received numerous texts, during the event & after, complimenting Alison & the wonderfully delicious spread that she put out. According to everyone in attendance, the food was FANTASTIC and there was so much of it! You know that things went well when you get asked for contact information for the caterer. Cheers to Alison & Baker's Dozen Catering & Cakes for a job well done!

My Vice Catering is a fantastic company. Their values for locally sourced and sustainable products is in line with what we believe in. They also pay and treat their staff so well. The bartenders we happy, efficient, and fun. The staff did an amazing job of busing and cleaning up. They arrived on time and prepared. Then there is the food.... so yummy. We got soooo many compliments from our guests. The appetizers were beautiful and delicious. They used the charcoal bbq at the venue and it really added to the experience and made the food so fresh. All the sauces, salsas, and attention to detail on the buffet table was great. Tarl was very communicative with us throughout the entire process. They handled all the rentals, we just had to pick what we wanted. So easy! If you are planning an event, hire My Vice Catering. Seriously, just do it. They are awesome!

Rick Browne knows his BBQ and his mastery of the grill has produced some of the best food I have ever tasted. Over the years I have been lucky enough to attend a couple of Rick Browne catered events. Grill-roast prime rib, tangy BBQ sauce, stuffed peppers with BACON!, and an amazing white chocolate orange souffle...just a sample of the goodness that has been prepared by Chef Rick.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

How much should catering cost per person?

Catering prices can range from about $10 per guest on the low end to $150 or more per person on the high end. Catering costs represent the quality of food, presentation, variety, ingredients and service. But catering prices are more than the cost to cook the food that will be at your party; they also include the cost for the company to do business. Here is a simple breakdown of catering prices:

    • Menu: The food you serve your guests will directly affect the price per person. Organic ingredients, complex recipes, elaborate presentations, or high-ticket items like lobster or filet mignon all add to the cost.
    • Service: Buffet, family style, plated dinners — how you serve the food affects the cost per person. For example, a true plated meal can cost about twice the price of a staff-assisted buffet because of staffing costs. Hiring waiters, bartenders and cleanup crew will all be calculated into the per-person catering price.
    • Drinks: Providing beverages and alcoholic drinks for guests greatly increases your catering budget. Hosting an open bar can cost as much per person as the meal.
    • Rentals: Seating, plates, glassware, etc., will all have an effect on the cost per person for catering. For example, a plastic conference table that seats 10 costs about $6 to rent on average, while a wooden farmhouse table is about $80 to rent on average.
    • Business costs: Any catering cost will also include the cost for the company to do business such as insurance, employee wages, commercial kitchen space and more.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
