My husband and I have never ran into contractors so easy to get along with, plus they did not pressure you and when you wanted all the details about using gas versus some other system so we can get the best energy efficient system, they explained a ductless heat pump system that is now installed and we love it. Also, all the workers and Jim Ballman were wonderful and we will recommend them to anyone that needs the services Revival provides. Carolyn and Larry Wence

Matt Bien was the tech that came out to clean/service the wall heaters and place a heat shield on the hot water pipe in the attic. He also installed an access panel for me. He did all of this expertly, professionally and competently! All traits rarely found anymore. He was personable too! I will recommend this company to everyone I know. Great experience and solid work! Call them! Ask for Matt Bien!

I'm a long time customer of Washougal Heating & Cooling. First time I reached out to them was during the snow blizzard in 2008 and they still were able to come out and fix my furnace when other companies said they were snowed it. Elijah who came out was very personal and fixed my furnace. I now use them for my annual maintenaces. Have been recommending them to all my friends and family.

We had no heat and the company I normally use couldn't come for 6 days. My husband is going through chemo therapy and thus the need to have heat sooner. Someone came that day (Saturday) and fixed or furnace to the point we have heat. Great company!

I originally had an appt for 3:00 so made arrangements to leave work early… By 4:30 I had not heard anything so called and got the answering service. Almost ½ hour later I recd a call from the technician to let me know he would be on his way (just finishing another job) and shortly after that, another call from who I assume to be the owner or manager. I completely understand that circumstances force changes in a person’s schedule but had I received a phone call, I would likely have planned my day differently. In the end, the technician arrived and in short order had my furnace back in working condition and informed me that he had been instructed to make an adjustment to my bill. I had been assured that the issue of not being notified would be looked into and indeed I did get an email acknowledging responsibility for the failure to communicate (rare in this day and age). All in all, I would recommend Morrison Heating and Cooling, would use them again, and would recommend them to others. I appreciated the immediate response in providing a quote so quickly once I posted my need on Thumbtack. They treated me fairly and the technician showed me that part that needed to be replaced and had it available on his van. This was my second experience with Thumbtack and I will use it over and over again.

Ben Fish provided our inspection/bid and was dead on the money with what could improve our house's energy efficiency - and make our upstairs bedrooms livable in the summer heat. He was knowledgeable - and both found (and fixed) a natural gas leak he stumbled on (loose nut on the fitting to our furnace) and identified asbestos tape/wrap on some of our ductwork and register boots. While he couldn't be certain - he was confident it was asbestos (it was) and that we should remove it before doing any AC/ductwork with Revival (we did). Revival was not the cheapest bid - but the quality of the work speaks for itself. I am comfortable that we got the best quality work that we could've - and they really surpassed our expectations. When Ben arrived the day of the work due to start - he mentioned that our bathroom fan vent wasn't connected (which we knew) and offered to add a vent into the project for free since they'd be cutting roof sections for the mushroom vents anyway! I installed a new bathroom fan the next weekend - and we're so thrilled they did that for us. They even connected a 4'' duct and left it for me to connect once I had the new fan installed. The crews were both fast, courteous, and skilled. They communicated with me every step of the way - and made judgment calls which were accurate and sensible. The project took longer than anticipated (by a day and a half) - but I'd happily take that over rushing through the work. They sealed every joint - and greatly improved the efficiency of our existing air handler and ductwork - and the new ducts and boots were installed with great precision. The fact they could even install the AC coils is a miracle - we had to drop the whole furnace and redesign the air intake to accommodate it with the 6' 3'' ceilings. We're totally overjoyed with the work that was done - and would recommend revival in a heartbeat.

Mike was very responsive to my RFQ and his telephone follow-up. He arrived to the job site on time and immediately began to diagnose why our AC compressor was not functioning. He switched the common wire on the thermostat and blower controller board and he replaced a blown fuse on the controller board. Although the above repairs were needed to get the controller board functioning, again, the AC compressor was still not kicking in. After some additional probing and running voltage checks at the compressor, Mike concluded that I had a blown circuit breaker. I purchased a new and replaced the circuit breaker myself (Mike is not a licensed electrician) and still nothing. I called Mike to let him know the situation and he said he would swing back by my house to take another look. He arrived shortly after and ran additional voltage tests at the compressor electrical shut-off outside the house. He concluded I had a wiring problem in the house and I needed to call a licensed electrician. The following day, I was successful in getting another HVAC Technician to come out to diagnose why the AC compressor was not kicking on. The second Technician did a more thorough job of probing the wiring to the compressor low and high voltage switch and he discovered one of the two wires to that switch had gotten hot enough to make the insulation on the wire very brittle and in fact, the copper strands of the wire under that brittle area were actually fractured. Therefore, no electrical contact to the compressor low and high voltage switch. After stripping the insulation back on both wires, replacing the connectors, plugging the wires back onto the switch, the compressor kicked right on. I called Mike to let him know what another Technician had done to fix my system - I did not need the new breaker switch nor did I need to hire an electrician. And, I also shared that although Mike looked at the wiring to the low and high voltage switch, if he would have just probed / wiggled those wires, he would have found my problem, just as the second Technician did. I also shared with Mike that I not only paid him for his service call, but I had to pay the second Technician an overtime charge + the cost of the repair. Mike did not offer to provide me with any compensation (e.g. partial refund for his charge; split the cost of the OT charge that I had to pay the second Technician, etc.).

We installed a Mini Split Ductless Heat system and we needed the lines vacuumed out. We called several HVAC companies and got quoted high rates and could be up to 3 weeks before we could get someone out to help us,no one wanted to help us. We found Supermen on Craigslist and sent a message at about 7pm, they responded quickly and gave us a quote. We called the next day when they opened up and they were able to schedule us for the next day after that. The customer service was excellent and the technician (Oscar) was very professional and helpful in making sure we could get our system up and running even though it was not there system. I would recommend this company to my friends and family. We will be calling when we need maintenance work done. Thank You

Stephen installed a new heat pump system, including ducting, plenum & air registers. We had baseboard heating originally. He gave us different system options at the start before we made the decision to go with a heat pump. He did a great job, staying late each day to meet my our desired completion goals. The whole project went exactly how he said, from start to finish. Clean & Courteous throughout & his pricing is very fair. I would absolutely recommend him to friends & family!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much will it cost me to replace my furnace?

The national average for furnace replacement is between $1,800 and $2,500. The cost can range dramatically higher depending on the model of furnace you select, any repair work you require, your location and the cost of installation. Furnace installation costs can be more than the furnace itself due to the cost of doing business and the expertise needed to install the HVAC equipment. Installing a new furnace generally requires technical know-how and the proper tools and licensing. It’s best to hire a pro and budget for furnace installation rather than risk potentially unsafe DIY installation. This will ensure your home’s safety. Check to see if your HVAC contractor has the proper licensing to do the job. If you need duct repair or replacement, expect to pay more for your furnace installation costs. The price for duct repair could be an hourly rate ranging on average anywhere from $85 to $150 per hour, with additional costs for parts.

How much does it cost to replace a gas furnace?

The cost to replace your gas furnace will vary based on the type and size of furnace you select, labor and installation costs, and any repairs your HVAC system may need. Nationally, average HVAC prices for a heating specialist range between $1,800 and $2,500. It’s important to select the right size gas furnace for your heating needs. A furnace that’s too small won’t heat your house properly, while a furnace that’s too large will run inefficiently, cycling on and off and likely breaking down sooner. HVAC specialists calculate your exact heat needs by measuring your home and incorporating variables such as the regional climate and your home’s level of insulation. Retail pricing for gas furnaces can range from $650 up to $3,000 and more. The higher the AFUE (annual fuel utilization efficiency) rating of the furnace, the more efficient it is at turning fuel into heat and the lower your carbon footprint and utility bill will be. HVAC installation costs are often based on an hourly rate and can range from under $50 to over $100 per hour, depending on the company and the furnace being installed. Higher-end furnaces cost more to install because they require added labor and expertise. For a typical installation, it might take two HVAC installation pros one day or less to remove your old furnace and replace it with a new one.

How much does it cost to have your furnace cleaned?

To keep your furnace in good working order it’s important to have it regularly cleaned. The national average furnace cleaning cost ranges from $60 to $80, though prices can vary greatly based on where you live in the country and what your furnace maintenance includes. An HVAC company may have different rates for different levels of furnace maintenance. For example, one company may offer general furnace maintenance for $79 and advanced maintenance for $138. Another company may offer a 38-point maintenance check for $89 and a 64-point maintenance check for $178. According to Energy.gov, a standard furnace cleaning and maintenance visit can include:

    • Checking the vent connection pipe and chimney
    • Checking the physical integrity of the heat exchanger
    • Adjusting the controls to provide optimum air temperatures
    • Checking the combustion chamber for cracks
    • Testing for carbon monoxide (CO)
    • Adjusting the blower control and supply-air temperature
    • Cleaning and oiling the blower
    • Removing soot and corrosion from the furnace
    • Checking the fuel input and flame characteristics
    • Sealing the connections between the furnace and the main ducts

How much will it cost me to replace my air conditioner?

If your AC system is in need of replacement, the national average air conditioner installation costs range from $2,930 to $3,670. Costs can vary greatly depending on whether you are replacing a wall or window unit or a central air system. A central air system is connected to ductwork that runs throughout your house and pumps cooled air into your various rooms via vents and registers. A central air conditioning system is far more costly than wall or window units. Selecting a central AC system that has a high seasonal energy-efficiency ratio (SEER) will likely lower both your carbon footprint and your utility bill. The type of AC system you select, where you live in the country, and the regional costs of HVAC work, duct removal and replacement, and ductwork repairs that are needed are some of the main factors that affect the cost of new air conditioner installation. Here are some examples of average costs for installing forced-air systems.

    • Install Lennox 16 SEER single-stage AC unit: $5,743
      • Removing and disposing of the old furnace, moving and reconnecting the water heater, and installing a 3.5-ton gas furnace. The job took 18 hours of labor.
    • Installation of a new 14 SEER single-range cooling system: $4,000-$6,000
    • Installation of a new 16 SEER two-range cooling system: $6,000-$8,000
    • Installation of a new 20 SEER variable capacity cooling system: $8,000-$12,000
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
