We brought our 1yr old lab/border collie to Cynthia for obedience training. It didn't take long to see that she definitely has skills when it comes to K9 training, after only two sessions with Cynthia working with us and Bowie, we already see a new side to our dog that were pretty stoked about. No regrets in going with Cynthia, and looking forward to upcoming sessions...

We have seen great improvement with our puppy thanks to Molly, our Great Dane has been leash reactive and would not listen to us when there were other dogs around. she has shown huge improvement and we are very happy with the training that both we and our dog received. We were amazed how fast Rebecca had our wild little sheltie eating out of her hand. She left us with some ideas to redirect her and we are so pleased with the success. We are going to have her come back a few more times to help with her training and reinforce the skills she had use work on. We definitely recommend her!!!

Our experience working with Jamie to help train our dogs has been excellent. She involves the entire family and worked very well helping our kids work with the dogs. Her approach and techniques have been very effective with our dogs, especially our rescue. We highly recommend Jamie for any dog training assistance and will continue to have her work with our family for future dog training.

Nicole was amazing! We only had a few days with her and she taught us everything she possibly could. She was assertive with our pup and help us do the same. My husband did the sessions with me and while he practiced with our dog, I practiced with Flynn, Nicole's well trained Australian Shepherd. That proved to best way for us to learn as we were both able to be active. Watching her with her dog provided a great example to us if what we were training our dog to do. Nicole was patient and very helpful. He repeated herself often and encouraged us to take notes to ensure that we grasped every concept she taught us. Our 6 month old puppy is doing great! He walks well on a leash and obeys commands like come, sit, down, stay, and heel. We are now practicing of leash training and with Nicole's help he is doing great! I would recommend her to anyone who has adopted a dog of any age.

We worked with Brenda when our Papillons were puppies. We had man issues with the dogs barking and marking in our house to a point we were frustrated. Brenda was quick to settle the dogs down and work with them one on one. She has the ability to talk to the dogs and they know they have to mind and do so. It is amazing and I believe she is the female dog whisperer! I would recommend her to anyone seeking help in dog training.

Kymber began working with our dog Otis a couple months ago. Before meeting Kymber, Otis was extremely timid and lacked much confidence around other dogs. These personality traits definitely impacted his obedience in the house as well. Throughout our training, we worked on creating environments that would allow Otis to gain confidence and let his true personality shine. The result has been a much more confident, obedient, and happy dog. We could not be happier with the progress Otis has made and would recommend Kymber to any dog owner who needs some training help.

Debbie has been training my dog after I spoiled her and taught her a few ban habits. Debbie has always been very patient with both my dog and me. I feel that my dog has come a long way with the training Debbie gave to both of us. I have a new puppy that I intend to have her train as well - I trust her abilities and she is very caring with the animals. I often recommend her to friends that have pets. Jojo loves her.

Dulce comes daily to take our dog for a walk mid-day. She is very responsible, noticed when our dog was limping and texted me right away, and gives me regular updates. We are working on proper leash walking and she is open to be consistent with our training approach. I feel quite comfortable having my puppy in her care.

Our family adores Ashley and so does our little dog, Bowie. We are so glad she came into our lives! We thought we were just getting a dog walker, but we got that and someone who is invested in our dog's training and success. Ashley is working with Bowie to make sure his transition from being a stray to being a beloved family pet is smooth and healthy for everyone. I can't recommend her highly enough!

My wife and I found Jeff at the sportsmen show earlier this year. We carefully explained to Jeff that I have had many dogs in the past but had always wanted a proffesionaly trained retiever. I explained I was adamant about the limited use of shock collar and a dog focused on hunting from a boat. Jeff said he focused on my concerns and the type of hunting I wanted a partner for. Jeff took my 90 lb over weight dog and returned to me a 70 lb dog that was all about hunting. After working her for two months I asked Jeff for some help with advanced tactics that I was struggling with, he provided me with advice that I found invaluable in completing my dogs training. After this season I intend to use Jeff's facility for another week of his proffesional training help to give closure to any new tactics I may want to add to my dogs abilities. Both Heather (Jeff's wife) and Jeff provide a environment that was easy for my dog to acclimate too and quickly be ready to meet the challenge given her.

Bringing our Shiba inu to Holly was the best thing we ever did. We were at our wits end and didn't know what to do with her aggression. Holly took her in and treated her like her own with love and she has never been better! She listens, places, sits, comes, everything. We can have her around company and finally a real part of our family. Wouldn't have made it without Holly. She kept is updated and assured that she was greatly cared for when we did to want to let her go, well my boyfriend. :) best trainer out there! Do what's best for your family!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
