My wife, my daughter and I have trained with Portland Shotokan for about 3 years. I appreciate both the quality of instruction and the community of students the program has drawn. Everyone is dedicated both to developing their own ability and to ensuring a safe and positive experience for others in the class. It's been a great experience to share as a family. I like the way that Robert sensei and Bettina sensei adjust the level of instruction to ensure that beginners get a good start and more advanced students continue to be challenged.

My daughter started with PSK as an afterschool program at Richmond Elementary a Japanese immersion school 3 years ago. I began taking classes a few months later at the Oregon Buddhist Temple. I believe that it speaks volumes that these two communities allow our group to use their spaces to teach traditional Japanese Karate. Growing up I studied a similar style of karate with my father from white to black belt and now I am getting the opportunity to share that experience with my child. I would never put my child in a dangerous environment, I feel that both of us getting an exceptional level of training in both kata and kumite. Shihan Sensei and Bettina Sensei command respect while maintaining a level of approachability that I truly appreciate.

She and her husband are wonderful people . i am welcomed to sit and watch my husband in class. they are effective and professional teachers who guide my husband's learning at his own rate being sensitive to his limitations. we are both grateful to know them and my husband Todd told me it's truely an honor to be taught by a master sensei. Todd also told me this power couple make karate fun. Susan carr

When I moved to Portland, I searched for the best karate dojo to continue my 20 years journey in Shotokan karate. I made a comparison between six karate dojos in Portland area. At the end, I have chosen Portland Shotokan Karate Do because of the enthusiast and respectful environment. Robert and Bettina Sensei have the capability to tailor training according to your needs. I highly recommend this place to anyone loves the real Karate.

Portland Shotokan is one of the finest and most traditional martial arts schools in the greater Portland area. Bettina Sensei and her husband are both dedicated to teaching the art of Shotokan karate while instilling self-discipline, respect, and honor in each and every student that enters their Dojo. I highly recommend that you visit their school, ask questions and take a class or two. Be ready to enjoy a great workout, learn to defend yourself, and be immersed in one of the finest martial arts culture the world has to offer.
