FAQs
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Absolutely. I am always looking for opportunities to increase my level of professional growth. I always feel that "I want to know more"; so much knowledge to absorb! Not only is it required that therapists maintain a certain level of professional development, the field is always changing and I believe it is my responsibility as a professional to consistently increase my level of professional knowledge about my field. I consistently read professional journals, take advantage of online webinars, and continually take opportunities to network and stay connected with my peers in the field. Finally, I consult, consult, consult!
- How did you get started doing this type of work?
Previously, I was an educator for ten years and worked with students at the elementary and middle school levels who were identified as having learning disabilities. Wanting to engage on a deeper level with families drove me to earn my master's degree in counseling. I have fought hard to learn many of my life lessons through various experiences. I believe that 'having been there, done that' provides me with the ability to put myself in my clients' shoes and provide the empathy that is crucial to the therapeutic relationship. I have a high level of insight I am able to share with clients that benefits them. I can use my life experiences to 'give back', which is incredibly rewarding.
- What types of customers have you worked with?
I am particularly interested in working with individuals, couples, and families who struggle with the impact of trauma in relationships. I believe that it is early attachment and family of origin that lays the foundation for how well individuals are able to navigate their lives. I believe that families are systemic and that within the main family system are 'sub-systems'. I take a 'structural family systems' approach in working with clients in order to help identify what might be keeping them 'stuck', thus, preventing them from functioning at an optimal level. I believe that all individuals have a desire to reach their potential and that often, it is their lack of self understanding, oftentimes rooted in their family of origin, that present obstacles in reaching their full potential. My goal as a marriage and family therapist is to facilitate self understanding, spiritual connection, and the process of reaching one's full potential.
