What is a good age to start vocal lessons?

If you’re thinking about signing up your child for voice lessons, keep in mind that some instructors recommend waiting until their voice settles after puberty. Talk to voice coaches near you to find out if now's the time for you (or your child) to start taking lessons.

What are singing lessons like?

Every voice coach may have a different style of teaching, but here are a few things you'll likely experience during a singing lesson:

  • Explaining to the instructor what you want to improve on.
  • Going through a few breathing and riff exercises.
  • Receiving constructive feedback and criticism from the instructor.

Before your first voice lesson, you can ask your instructor what you should expect and how to prepare.

Where can you get singing lessons?

You can receive singing lessons from a vocal instructor or voice coach on Thumbtack. Some instructors offer virtual lessons, while others may require you to come into a studio for instruction.

How many singing lessons do I need?

To anyone looking for a voice teacher you need to try a lesson with Dan! He is fun and easy to get along with, and his quality of work is obvious after my first lesson. I’m always looking forward to my next lesson!

We bought voice lessons for our son-in-law who has never sung before. He loves his lessons! We heard Jesse in concert. He sang an hour-long series of broadway hits (one of his many genres). He has a wonderful voice and range and is a great pianist. Really relates well to audiences and students

I’ve been taking voice lessons through Vocal Lab with Annie Pichan for a few months now, and I couldn’t be more grateful for my experience. I not only feel improvement and strength in my voice, but I am more knowledgeable about singing related anatomy, proper placements, artistry, and really the “why’s” behind why we do everything in lessons. My lessons and instructor have given me above and beyond support and mentoring through my beginning journey as an artist, and really could not be a better place for any singer looking to start lessons. Highly highly recommend.

Ed has a great understanding of the voice. We had several informative discussions during my lessons about the anatomy and mechanics involved in creating a pleasing sound, the difficulties involved, and exercises to improve upon it.

Denise is WONDERFUL! She's fun, kind, and understanding. Her work ethic is responsive and flexible, and she makes even the most novice vocalist (me) look forward to the lessons. We do creative exercises, and even after the first lesson, I felt like my ear was more trained, and I could more readily make out the notes. If you're thinking of taking voice lessons, I highly recommend Denise!

I have been in choirs and in various other musical settings for 12 years and have experienced many different teaching styles. When I initially started individual voice lessons, I was with an instructor who had a "one teaching method, fits all" approach to teaching. After about 4 months of lessons, I gave up and began looking for a new instructor... someone who would identify my weak points and help me develop a stronger, more balanced voice. After many, many initial interviews, I was very discouraged... until I met Emily. Emily invests in her students. She came up with a daily vocal routine specifically tailored to me and remained in constant communication with me about any questions I had. Not only is she continuously helping me identify my struggles and build technique but she also has taken the time to show me that I have many options of making it as a serious musician. Because of her, I am in the process of re-evaluating my whole academic plan. I am so grateful to have found such an amazing, talented, and skilled instructor! I am learning so much from her continuously!

I want to preface this by saying that I wish I could pick all 5 items instead of 3 in regards to what I like about working with Saki. She is extremely knowledgeable about her craft and knows a variety of methods how to help me overcome my personal habits that inhibit my voice. She is also very considerate and encouraging. I've been working with Saki for a few months now and while there will always be much to learn, I'm happy to have grown as much as I have. I didn't have much hope for myself going in, but I'm glad I dared because I found myself a wonderful teacher. The lessons are the highlight of my week.
