Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

What is considered a local move vs. a long-distance move?

Local moves are among the most common moves. Unlike a long-distance move, a local move is typically less than 50 miles and does not cross state lines. Generally, a local move only takes one day, and movers tend to charge by the hour.

The definition of a long-distance move may vary depending on the moving company. Generally, a long-distance considered to be any move of 400 miles or more. However, some say a long-distance move is over 50-100 miles.

Local Move

A move under 50 miles

Long-Distance Move

A move over 50-100 miles or over 400 miles; may also be called an “interstate move” or “out-of-state move”

Out-of-State Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “interstate move” or “long-distance move”

Interstate Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “out-of-state move” or “long-distance move”

Intrastate Move

A move that begins and ends in the same state, typically beyond 50 miles

Interstate moves require additional legal preparation and will incur additional costs for distance, the amount and weight of your items, the preparation required and various other factors. Moving companies tend to do an initial weighing of the truck, which you should be present for.

A move that crosses state lines is considered an interstate move or an out-of-state move. Contrast this with an intrastate move, which begins and ends in the same state, but is typically above 50 miles.

To determine whether your move is local or long-distance, contact the best movers in your area.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

Can you move furniture by yourself?

You might be able to move smaller items like nightstands, small desks, chairs and small tables by yourself. However, it’s best to get a professional mover near you to move larger items such as couches, dressers, armoires and televisions.

If you do decide to move furniture by yourself, carefully lift and lower items and take your time.

How much does it cost to move a couch?

It costs around $290, on average, to move a couch. However, your actual cost will depend on a variety of factors. Couch movers will often quote the job based on the size of the couch, as well as how far it has to travel. A larger couch, such as a sectional, will likely cost more money to move.

On the other hand, smaller couches typically cost less, as there are fewer sections and fewer people are required to move it. Some couches may be very delicate due to their age, or they may have certain decorative details that complicate the moving process. These may cost more as well.

Casey Movers are the best movers we have ever had. They moved a heavy sleep sofa and took great care in wrapping it and then moving it . They are professionals and we highly recommend them.

All aspects of the move were excellent from set up of moving date to the move. Actually hired them twice since we needed to have things in storage for awhile. Very careful with mom's things! And just nice guys! Hire them - that will make your move less stressful.

Moving is a stressful time, and when things go awry on moving day it can be frustrating. But, when things do go awry the most you can hope for is great customer service and that is what I experienced with PDX Premier College Movers. We had some communication issues compounded by terrible weather the day of the move, but Kathryn was extremely responsive to my feedback and made things right very quickly! All of that aside, the two movers who did the move were great - polite, hardworking and a pleasure to have help us on a stressful day!

It took less than 1/2 hour to do the moving as I had partially moved all items. I was charged full price. They were careful and did a good job but I was charged too much.

Three movers arrived on time for the move and did an outstanding job. I moved five townhouses down and added more stairs which they handled with ease. Instead of using the truck, they walked everything over in the middle of a heavy rain storm. They were personable, professional, and very efficient. The price was good too. I wasn't nickeled and dimed for every little thing either. I would hire them again in a heartbeat.

I can't say enough about my experience with supportive Services moving. The team was professional, hard working, and worth every penny. My family and I had a difficult task of also moving a large sized play structure from our backyard. Randy and his team took apart the structure, moved it to our new property, hiked it up a large hill, and put it back together for us. This is one example of how this team works for their customers. I would use them again in a heart beat.

I can't say enough positive things about these guys! They are great when you have just a few things to move. In our case, we wanted to move items among 5 locations and they were so polite and professional. I will probably hire them again soon as we are cleaning out my mom's house and distributing items to various friends and relatives. They work quickly and got all our items moved within the 2-hour minimum, including a trip to donate items to Good Will.

We needed a piano moved down 5 stairs to another room. Though initial communication with Robert was a bit fragmented because I don't text and don't have a camera on my phone, we finally talked on the phone and got the job lined up within my time frame. Initially, I thought the cost was a bit high for 10 minutes' work ($120), I'm sure the gas, overhead and assistance (1 helper) was fair since I could not do the job myself. In comparing other movers, Robert's price was very reasonable. He and Luis showed up, took care in moving my piano, and it was very quick and easy. I would hire Moving with Ease again. Thank you, LJ

We had heavy, hard to maneuver furniture and they moved it fast. They padded and wrapped the furniture and then strapped it in the truck (which was large) to protect it.

Brent and Brian were AWESOME!!!! They were friendly, fast, hard working and so careful with my things. They outshone the high priced name brand company I used last time and I will be sure to call on PDX Premier College Movers for all future moves. Communication was always quick too as we worked to set up times and my questions were always answered to my satisfaction. The actual cost was within $35 of the bid and under $400. A real bargain compared to my last move. :-) I moved from a 2nd story condo in West Linn to a ground floor smaller condo in Tigard. It took 3.5 hours for them to load the truck, drive here and unload it. That was 2 hours less than the name brand company who moved me 3 miles from a 2nd story apt to a 2nd story condo with 3 men and charged me over $500. You cannot go wrong this company, they are responsive, positive, quality hard workers. I am very, very happy!!!

I am updating the review based on follow-up with the promised Amazon $50 gift card. While the guys who did the moving were great, I'll have to say the advertisement on providing the gift card never came through, and that the price advertised online is not what I was charged. I paid $95 per hour despite the $70 advertised price and was told there was a 3-hour minimum, but the movers were very efficient and finished in 2 hours which I was happy with. However, after 4 weeks the promised $50 Amazon gift card never arrived despite texting and messaging Josh several times. The movers were good, just disappointed in the overall customer service that was promised. In hindsight, I would recommend using a credit card to pay and don't pay with cash as I did because with a card you can dispute the promised services which were advertised and not delivered on. Roy and Quinn were the two movers who helped out, they were prompt and very professional. They were very careful moving our huge dining room hutch out, and also did a great job of placing things in a great space-saving area! They went above and beyond and moved anything else I needed while they were there, really helpful! Really great crew!

Having all “friends” bail on me, Aaron and his buddy, Thomas, were able to help within a few hours notice. I was needing two sofas and two end tables moved to storage. They were friendly, efficient, and very professional. I’m considering hiring them once we move my daughter in the near future. They are well worth your time and money…and a local business.

Oscar and his team did an excellent job of moving some very heavy furniture up some stairs and into a tricky loft space. He reached out immediately and was able to do this very quickly for a fair price.
