My daughter had painted some amazing oil paintings! My family and friends all wanted copies. I looked on line as to how to create prints. The only real way is to develop photos of them and prints from the photo's. Thumbtack was great because it gave me 5 professional photographers right in my area. I liked Mike's profile and the amazing work he has done. From there the effort on my part was so easy! Mike picked up the paintings, shot the photos in his professional studio, returned the paintings, and provided the files on line and a link to have prints made. I didn't have to leave the house! I knew the prints had to be made professionally at a high resolution with the proper lighting. I looked at the files on line and they were amazing! I purchased prints, full size matching the size of the paintings and then also several 11" x 14". The prints were awesome! The clarity and detail were almost better than the oil paintings themselves! Mike was so friendly, professional and responsive. It was a great experience! The awe's on Christmas day said it all! I recommend Mike to anyone! Thx! Joe Ross

Matthew Porter is by far one of the best photographers I've ever worked with, and I've worked with many. He's very professional and always creates stunning works of art. He is truly passionate about what he does and it shows in his work. He has just relocated not that long ago and he is already missed. Matthew is an unbelievable visionary and has an incredibly unique way of brining his visions, and those of others, to life. I would recommend anyone to work with thus amazing photographer.

Working with J&J studios for our engagement photos were great! They made my Fiance and I feel very comfortable and relaxed during the shoot. They knew how to place us in all the right places for the photos at the outdoor location we picked. John and Vanessa delivered our photos very fast and they looked amazing! We have decided to hire them for our Wedding and couldn't be more excited. Their prices are very reasonable as well and don't break the budget :)

New Roots Photography (aka Amanda Kleban) is hands down one of the most talented photographers you will EVER work with. She has a passion for photography that shines though each and every picture. We will cherish each and every photo of our Special Day and are extremely blessed to have such beautiful memories put into pictures. She does not treat this as just a business, this is her passion, desire and true gift! She was willing to work with our budget, and was extremely flexible! I can't say enough about Amanda and her photography! We love you Amanda, and can't wait to see the wonderful moments you capture for years and years!

Jill was absolutely amazing. Jill found us on Thumbtack, and from our first encounter through the delivery of our photos, Jill was nothing but professional, friendly, responsive, and accommodating. She offered to photograph our engagement photos and wedding, both in upstate NY, with no extra charge, despite it being quite far for her. She is extremely reasonably priced (our package included an engagement shoot, 6 hours of wedding day photography, plus all of the high res digital images on a jump drive). She was happy to set up a Google Hangout with my fiance and I so that we could "meet" her, even though we lived far away. During our engagement shoot, she took her time and made sure we got photos in all of the locations that were meaningful to us. She was open to suggestions from us and accepted them willingly. She got us our engagement photos in time for us to use them for our save the dates and they came out great! As for our wedding day, Jill arrived on time and made sure to get photos of both myself, the groom, the bridesmaids, and the groomsmen before the ceremony started, and scoped out the grounds, as it was a new venue to her. Again, she was very willing to take suggestions from us about different shots we wanted to get. She captured amazing photos before and during the ceremony, and during the reception. She efficiently took group photos of my husband and I with every guest. She blended into the crowd and left us to enjoy the entire night without pulling us for unnecessary photos (as I know some photographers do). She even reminded us when it was time to cut the cake and that we'd forgotten to arrange for cake decorations (last minute flower display to the rescue)! After the wedding, Jill kept us posted via social media about when our photos would be ready. She mailed us a beautiful package including our jump drive with all of our photos organized into folders. She also designed our thank you notes for free! We are forever grateful that we chose Jill as our wedding photographer!

Joan is a wonderful teacher. You can tell she has a passion for photogrophy and that shows in her teaching. She takes the time to explain your own camer and then takes you out into the field to practice getting shots. I would recommend her to every new photographer like myself. She helped me grasp the concept and I'm able to take good shots after just two lessons!

Our family was looking for a outdoor portrait and we used 2PK for them. We wanted to use the beautiful backdrop of Philadelphia. We discussed our ideas with Paul and he came up with great suggestions and different parts of the city that we hadn't considered. It was wonderful to have a couple different spots downtown and iconic structures and statues too. We were very pleased with the portraits and value for our money. We ended up selecting a lot of pictures because we couldn't decide between them all! Great job and we will use 2PK again!

Tom Friel is a gifted and skilled photographer. My background is in directing and producing television programming. Tom is one of the rare photographers who not only has technical expertise in photography, he is extraordinary in capturing candid moments without drawing attention to himself. In this way, the event participants are often unaware that they are being photographed, and the resulting pictures are natural. I was one of the guests at a reunion that Tom photographed and when Tom shared the resulting pictures, I was delighted to relive the event and to see intimate moments that I had personally missed. And the speed at which he delivered the finished photos was impressive.

Working with Emma was wonderful from the planning stage, through the wedding day, to getting our pictures after the wedding!! Emma asked great questions about what we wanted for our wedding day. She understood both of our personalities so she was able to make suggestions to us and captured the best moments from our day!! We are so grateful to have had her as our photographer and treasure the pictures she took!

I was asked by my wedding photographer to write a review on this site and please be completely honest and express my true feelings. I began by doing the gushing thing about how great he was which seems to be the norm on all these sites with 5 star reviews. I thought is this what anyone really wants to read anymore or do they want real facts and research as to how I came to my decision? My career is engineering and I do not buy anything without completely understanding the product or service. What I wanted to know about my photographer: How many weddings had they already photographed, what type of post-production or editing on the photos they did, can I see several complete wedding shoots, was the pricing fair, how many photos would I actually receive, what type of insurance they carried, would there be a second photographer and a big one for me, what type of equipment is used. I felt I needed someone that had taken at least 50 or more weddings because practice makes perfect and with so much going on, I wanted someone prepared for whatever might happen. They also could bring suggestion with merit having all that experience. 50 was my cut off. And I had to have 2 photographers. I have been in several weddings as a bridesmaid and no matter what anyone might state just needing one, it can’t be done. Cost was a factor, I did not want to pay a fortune for wedding photos but I also realized that many of those wants I list come into play in determining cost. Most of those bad reviews usually funnel down to the adage you get what you pay for. I realized not paying the lowest price, I would spare myself the nightmares many experienced. Being a camera buff, I know the best photographer can photograph a wedding with a cell phone and have good results but a pro with great equipment is critical. Camera bodies and lens are so important and can take good wedding photography to great. You need to ask your photographer what type of equipment they use and then do some research. All that said, I selected Jared and his staff because they met all my needs. They stayed in contact, made some great suggestions based on past experience, have some of the best equipment out there and delivered what they promised. And you will find, he is actually a great guy with a heart to match. His main goal was to make us happy and we could not be happier.

She is super sweet and professional!! She is a young, budding photographer who is much more willing to work with your likes and needs and budget more than the older photographers I've come across. She has a lot of great ideas especially for outdoor shots. She is very willing to use your ideas and suggestions--actually she encourages it! Give her a shot, you won't regret it!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Do you tip a photographer for family photos?

Tipping a photographer for family portraits is not standard etiquette. A great way to recognize a family photographer who goes above and beyond is to write them a glowing review. You probably found your photographer by reading online reviews, so paying it forward by letting everyone know how much you appreciate their work is a great gift. Write your review after they have delivered the final edited photos on time and you’ve confirmed that you’re happy with the terrific portraits they took.

What should you wear for a family photo?

A family photographer captures your family in a series of professionally edited portraits. You can be goofy, you can be formal, you can be exactly how you want to be. To that end, you can wear what makes you feel comfortable and confident — feeling good translates to looking good in photos. However, top family photographers do have some style suggestions that will make your family photos more visually cohesive:

  • Ask the photographer for color suggestions if you’re doing an outdoor photo shoot. Location and time of day can affect which shades will fade in the sunlight and what will stand out in a good way.
  • Stay away from a mix of stripes or plaids on multiple people — the effect is too busy.
  • Steer clear of tiny patterns, which blend together too much.
  • Avoid wearing matching outfits.
  • Do wear outfits that are complementary in color.
  • Choose color over black-and-white outfits.
  • Do choose a theme, such as pastels, fall colors or summer colors.
  • Opt for tonally similar colors.
  • Go easy on makeup for outdoor photo shoots.

How much do photographers charge for family portraits?

Family portraits are a great way to mark the passage of time, create lifelong keepsakes and have gorgeous-looking photos for your annual holiday card. The national average cost for hiring family photographers ranges from $150 to $200. Pricing can range higher depending on where you live, length of the photo shoot, the number of edited photos you request, and the background and reputation of your family photographer. Before hiring, make sure you understand their fees up front. Ask how many finished images are included in the quoted price and whether you will receive all the photos taken (not just edited photos). Ask whether you’ll be able to download digital photos or if you’ll have to print them or purchase digital copies through the photographer. Here are some average examples of family photographer pricing:

  • $175 for a one-hour studio session in Kansas.
  • $200 for a one-hour studio or outdoor session in Georgia. Includes two outfit changes, access to an online gallery, and about 200 high-resolution, edited digital photo files on a DVD, with permission to print.
  • $400 for a one-hour outdoor session in Southern California. Includes 25-30 fully edited photos accessible online or via CD/DVD.
  • $425 or more for a one-hour outdoor or in-home session in Illinois. Includes more than 50 professionally edited images, online access and print release.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
