Subzero was hired to replace the blower and condenser unit of my high efficiency air conditioning system after 4 previous contractors I had look at the system became unresponsive. They were always punctual, communicative, and professional. I only wish I had hired them sooner.

I hired Kevin to help do some wiring, framing, and drywall so I would be able to mount a tv in a difficult location. He was very knowledgeable and was able to find some creative ways to get around a few unexpected problems he encountered once the wall was opened up. Another contractor I had come to look at the project told me it was no possible and left but now the job is done and my tv looks great with no wires showing.

I wish I could give more than five stars! We’ve had several highly-recommended and well-respected handymen and general contractors over the years and, without a doubt, Hill Home Improvement tops them all! I had an area of moisture-damaged drywall with mold that needed replacing, preferably as soon as possible because of the mold. Rob, the owner, responded to my Thumbtack inquiry in less than an hour. We spoke over the phone right away and he offered to come right over to provide an assessment and within 25 minutes of our call he was here! And it was 9:30 at night! - just goes to show Rob’s dedication and commitment to helping his clients. During his assessment, Rob was very professional, courteous, thorough, and knowledgeable of the problem at hand. What I appreciated the most was his unwavering integrity - he walked me through the plan and all costs; he wanted to complete the project properly while being very conscious of the cost for me. His prices were very very fair. He came the following day with one other worker. They were punctual, got right to work and were in and out so quickly - within an hour! The quality of work was exceptional. I couldn’t be happier! Thank you so much, Rob! Looking forward to many more projects together!

The project was a non-typical home addition. As the contractor, Dan Barrett shared his years of experience when recommending project plan alterations that resulted in improving the original design plans. Throughout the entire process, the construction site was cleaned up at the end of each day and materials were kept covered and protected from the weather. The combination of a team of skilled craftsmen, the full use of quality materials and solid attention to detail resulted in a very strong and beautiful finish. Barrett Custom Carpentry, LLC provided professional workmanship, continuous communication with the client and their prompt and polite service provided a pleasurable experience Barrett Custom Carpentry, LLC is an ideal contractor to work with.

Our house had a leak coming in from a rather large crack in the stucco siding which was leaking into one of our bedrooms. Jason had me send in some photos of the affected area and gave a very competitive estimate of the work. We were able to schedule and complete the work in a very short period of time. A waterproof layer was placed under the new stucco to avoid future leakage issues. The masonry work was done so well we almost couldn't tell where he had done the work. Jason and his crew are highly skilled and very friendly and accommodating. I would recommend them to anyone.

The price was excellent and so was the end result. We are extremely happy with the look and quality of the finished stucco and Seamus was a pleasure to work with. The only issues were timeline (took much longer than expected) and clean up. There was a decent mess left behind, including a ton of nails and metal scraps/shards from the stucco framing. Stucco was also splattered onto the siding and ultimately destroyed a decent portion of the yard, which was the staging area for mixing the stucco. Seamus did come back to rake/reseed the grass, but it's still patchy in places and it's taken us a minute to get everything back together.

I submitted a request for quotes last night. Several contractors indicated interest in our tree trimming job. We went with Lee partly because he indicated he was going to be in the area on another job. He and his coworker did a great job cleaning out an old tree that had significant overgrowth and dead branches. They mulched on the spot and did nice job of cleaning up. My wife and I are both pleased with the results. I would highly recommend Leon. Not only did he do a nice job, he was friendly and personable.

We hired Tom to do crown molding in our living room and dining room, which then extended to the kitchen and foyer. Because we discovered a slope in our ceiling we had to do some additional work to level it out. Tom has been great and we have been very pleased with the work he has done and extended the initial scope of the job to include some other projects. While there have been some challenges with scheduling, as expected with most contractors, and some projects took a little longer than expected, Tom has worked hard to complete them to our satisfaction and even made himself available on a weekend. Both my husband and I work from home so that afforded us flexibility with the schedule. We plan on hiring Tom again for future projects.

A few days ago I had a new stove delivered while they delivered it to my kitchen they suddenly said that the connection required a license electrician. Thank God for Thumbtack and Mike. He answered quickly what's Pleasant and efficient with a sense of humor and was here all of 20 minutes. I would recommend his work to anyone who is tired of contractors who take hours to do a simple task or who overcharged I felt that his rate was good and I fully intend to use him again if I have additional electrical needs. He's on the permanent Rolodex

We hired GCI to update our entire house , from the cellar to the third floor. New rugs , floors, paint, new bathroom and kitchen and a total clean up for the entire house. Updates were made to the plumbing and electrical systems. Perry and his crew were excellent. They showed up every day on time, they were respectful and kind to my entire family. They did beautiful work. Perry was always available to talk to with any questions. The crew worked quickly and we trusted them 100 percent. I was reluctant to start such a large project but Perry and his crew were there for us from start to finish. They made our house a home and I will be forever grateful to them. They went above and beyond their duties every day. Our family has a better life and we couldn’t be happier with our new home . Thank You Perry and crew !!!!!

Absolutely 100% recommend this company for all painting and backsplash tiling needs. The guys were extremely clean and protected our new floors and furniture with plenty of covers. Quality of painting was spot on. We asked them to be very careful not to paint hinges and hardware, and they didn’t get a drop of paint on them. We remodeled our entire home, and with all of the different contractors we had do work, Essential Painting was by far the best. Would recommend every time, and reach out to me through Thumbtack if you want a more detailed referral.

Our flooring issue was complicated. Pet damage (urine) had to be addressed and permanently fixed. We moved from expensive carpeting to high-end waterproof vinyl flooring (lumber Liquidators). Removal, replacement of sound/insulation board, installation of new flooring and all trim work was meticulously done to perfection! We could not be happier..highly recommend this contractor.

After interviewing a couple of contractors, we were thrilled to find Chris. He was always prompt, professional, and reasonably priced. Our basement went from a concrete unfinished space, to a beautiful new room for our family to enjoy. Chris is an excellent craftsman, and he made sure that the new renovation fit beautifully with our historic 1700's home. We highly recommend Chris.

We got Joe's name from referral and I can see why. In selling our home, Joe did a great job on stucco repairs/maintenance as well as various other general repairs around the house and did so on a clear timeline without delays. Not only was Joe extremely knowledgeable, his guys were great and he did the job in a timely & professional manner. He answered every question we had, was fair on pricing, did quality work, was dependable, and overall exceeded every expectation we had based off previous experiences with other contractors. We would HIGHLY recommend Joe to anyone looking for a trustworthy Stucco/Stone work and/or a general contractor for other home repairs.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

    What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

    • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
    • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
    • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
    • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
