Kevin built a custom shelf in an existing opening above a gas fireplace as the space would not accommodate our 50 inch TV. The results were much more than expected! Kevin built a beautiful shelf/mantel that looks like it was original to the space. Kevin was friendly, professional, courteous, fairly priced and completed the project in a timely manner. We would recommend him without hesitation.

We feel so fortunate to have found Barrett Custom Carpentry! From the first, very prompt, phone response to our inquiry, it has been an excellent experience. They installed drywall in our basement and also made a custom 10-foot oak counter top bar. Reasonable rates, high quality work, and very personable service! I am happy to recommend them.

Ed finished our garage into a dining room, made a pass through and doorway to the new room, built custom stairs, laid the cork flooring, installed 2 large picture windows and painted the room. It looks fantastic! Ed is very trustworthy and is a hard-worker. We are busy talking about the next home improvement!

Pete Cooper and his team at Spring Creek Design designed and built a "man cave" in our basement. Pete was very collaborative in the design process - offering his very professional opinion that was well balanced with practical construction considerations as well a keen sense of style. Like most projects, there were limitations, (space, budget, etc.) that were handled smoothly and openly. Spring Creek was not the cheapest design contractor that I had quote my project but I strongly doubt that anyone else could have matched the value. Lastly, I was very impressed with the tremendous attention to detail and the significant amount of pride and craftsmanship that Pete and his team poured into the project. One of these days, I plan on adding a porch off my office - any guesses on who I will call to create and execute this project?

EN Enterprises does top quality, long lasting work and Mike is a true craftsman who does the job right the first time, every time. Mike understands construction completely and has the creative ability and perception to see the project start to finish. He does not cut corners and will not do anything in a customer’s home that he wouldn't do in his own. I highly recommend EN Enterprises and can personally vouch as Mike has done many projects in my homes. You owe it to yourself to interview EN Enterprises for your next improvement project.

I hired Mike at MAS construction and he built me a new room on one side of my garage. Mike did a fantastic job and he was not only very reliable but his price was Great. I plan to use Mike in the future for other work in my house and also I highly Recomend Mike for anyone looking for an addition or work done to their house. Mike was also honest and i am a hard guy to please and for sure will use MAS Constuction for all of my Construction needs. MAS also finished my new room ahead of the time he set and also the main reason to use him again in the future is that Mike is EXCELLENT at what he does and he also went above and beyond to give me the service. I am over the moon with the job and the finish that Mike gave me.

What started as a simple roofing job turned into a real project; our back roof needed to be practically rebuilt, so there was an up-charge, but not an unreasonable one. Our house was built in the 1920's or 1930's, (I do not think there were many building codes at that time) so he had to contend with surprises from whatever was done back then. George will talk the problems out with you and arrive at a mutually agreed upon resolution - this is a very good thing with this house. So the 2 day job turned into a month-long affair, with delays due to weather, supplies and other issues. But the end result is so nice and all areas of the contract were fulfilled as requested. I recommend Alamo Home Improvement. I know we will use him again should a need arise (but he needs a new truck.)

Corey Built replaced our deteriorating 200 sq. ft. cement deck with an incredibly beautiful 400 sq ft composite-deck with lights. It's assembled extremely well with all ends finished and lined up. We absolutely love it. Chris the owner of Corey-Built, is very honest and approachable. Chris was on our build at least 90% of the time. Chris provided the initial plan and built it according to the design. Several issues came up during the build and Chris resolved these without a problem. The end product looks expensive as it was in material and labor. The deck was very well bought and assembled by Corey-Built. We're having Chris back to restore our laundry room and powder room. Big job requiring floor replacement, pocket door, lighting and cabinets. Expecting it to look awesome. Can't wait. I recommend Corey-Built for your next home construction build. Just don't use too much of his time. We're planning more jobs for Corey-Built after the laundry-room and powder room are finished. Garage, kitchen and basement are next..............

            Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

            How do architects work?

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

How do architects charge for their services?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.
