We had work done on a large wood deck (repair, power wash, and stain) on our house. We reached out to several contractors before deciding to use Michael Madonna and his team. We appreciated that they are a family-run business with 30+ years of experience. It was a pleasure working with Michael Madonna and his team from start to finish. Michael and his team were responsive, professional, and provided an honest assessment of the scope and cost of the project. They delivered on time and on budget without any hiccups. Because of the great work they did, we are planning to use them for other major remodeling/contracting work to be done on our house.

I had a bad circulator pump and 3 cracked radiators at one of my rental properties. This needed to be fixed before the tenants moved in. I was also out of town while this work got done. Benny did an amazing job of getting everything fixed, addressing leaks I didn't know of and keeping me updated throughout the process. I've been dealing with contractors for my rental properties for 6 years and this was one of my best experiences. I highly recommend this company.

I hired Kevin to help do some wiring, framing, and drywall so I would be able to mount a tv in a difficult location. He was very knowledgeable and was able to find some creative ways to get around a few unexpected problems he encountered once the wall was opened up. Another contractor I had come to look at the project told me it was no possible and left but now the job is done and my tv looks great with no wires showing.

I wish I could give more than five stars! We’ve had several highly-recommended and well-respected handymen and general contractors over the years and, without a doubt, Hill Home Improvement tops them all! I had an area of moisture-damaged drywall with mold that needed replacing, preferably as soon as possible because of the mold. Rob, the owner, responded to my Thumbtack inquiry in less than an hour. We spoke over the phone right away and he offered to come right over to provide an assessment and within 25 minutes of our call he was here! And it was 9:30 at night! - just goes to show Rob’s dedication and commitment to helping his clients. During his assessment, Rob was very professional, courteous, thorough, and knowledgeable of the problem at hand. What I appreciated the most was his unwavering integrity - he walked me through the plan and all costs; he wanted to complete the project properly while being very conscious of the cost for me. His prices were very very fair. He came the following day with one other worker. They were punctual, got right to work and were in and out so quickly - within an hour! The quality of work was exceptional. I couldn’t be happier! Thank you so much, Rob! Looking forward to many more projects together!

The project was a non-typical home addition. As the contractor, Dan Barrett shared his years of experience when recommending project plan alterations that resulted in improving the original design plans. Throughout the entire process, the construction site was cleaned up at the end of each day and materials were kept covered and protected from the weather. The combination of a team of skilled craftsmen, the full use of quality materials and solid attention to detail resulted in a very strong and beautiful finish. Barrett Custom Carpentry, LLC provided professional workmanship, continuous communication with the client and their prompt and polite service provided a pleasurable experience Barrett Custom Carpentry, LLC is an ideal contractor to work with.

Firstly, I can't recommend Gary highly enough for any level of remodeling or renovation jobs you may be doing. We recently used Real Deal$ to remodel the kitchen, bathroom and a large portion of the living area in our home and have been delighted with the both the process and the results. Having worked in real estate/property development, I have worked with a number of other contractors and know when I'm working with someone who knows their business and takes genuine pride in the quality of the work they're doing- and that certainly describes Gary and the sub contractors he works with. Although I was pretty sure I wanted to use Real Deal$ based on a friend's recommendation, I wanted to get bids from other renovation contractors for our remodel just to be thorough. When compared with the other bids, I was very impressed with Gary's pricing and the level of detail outlined in his bid. Another big factor for me in choosing the right contractor was the lead time involved for the renovation. Most of the other contractors couldn't work within our time constraints- which was to have all of the remodeling completed in six weeks. We knew it would be tight but Gary absolutely pulled through for us. Both our kitchen and bathroom look amazing, and both are so much more functional than they were before. We were absolutely delighted (and surprised based on experience with other contractors) that the remodel stayed on schedule and within our budget. The remodel took the demolition of the kitchen, bathroom and part of the living space down to the studs and put it all back together again with new plumbing, electrical and heating. Gary helped source all of the new appliances and finishes through his vendors for the entire remodel which can be a handful if you haven't done it before. He provided us with numerous sources for our kitchen cabinetry also. All the work performed throughout the remodel is of the highest standard and we enjoyed working with Gary and all of his sub contractors. I also really appreciated how hard they all worked towards keeping the remodel on schedule and 'WITHIN OUR BUDGET'. Remodeling, or any kind of renovation, (whether big or small) can be very stressful- but having Gary as our contractor really helped alleviate the majority of our concerns and I will definitely be calling him for any future renovation needs we may have. There are so many positive things to say about Randy, I don’t even know where to start! First of all, I’ve never dealt with a contractor who gives you a specific time when he will show up and then ACTUALLY show up at the time he said. This was not a coincidence, it happened 3 times in a row. Randy changed 11 doors by himself in 2 days in that blistering hot heat wave. But you know what Randy doesn’t do? He doesn’t complain, doesn’t intrude, doesn’t leave a mess, doesn’t cut corners, doesn’t nickel and dime you, doesn’t balk when you ask him questions and on top of all that is extreme pleasant and considerate. I watched him sweep the street where he was working so he left no dust behind. I wouldn’t hesitate to hire Randy again. He’s on speed dial...

Richie was really a great contractor! He helped me with the design of my garden tub and the white cararra marble tub came out gorgeous! We couldn't be happier with his vision and execution. He also did both of our floors as well and we had him add on a closet because it looked so nice! Here is the first project completed below. We love it! He's a hard worker and easy to get along with. We will be calling him for our next project for sure.

I submitted a request for quotes last night. Several contractors indicated interest in our tree trimming job. We went with Lee partly because he indicated he was going to be in the area on another job. He and his coworker did a great job cleaning out an old tree that had significant overgrowth and dead branches. They mulched on the spot and did nice job of cleaning up. My wife and I are both pleased with the results. I would highly recommend Leon. Not only did he do a nice job, he was friendly and personable.

We hired Tom to do crown molding in our living room and dining room, which then extended to the kitchen and foyer. Because we discovered a slope in our ceiling we had to do some additional work to level it out. Tom has been great and we have been very pleased with the work he has done and extended the initial scope of the job to include some other projects. While there have been some challenges with scheduling, as expected with most contractors, and some projects took a little longer than expected, Tom has worked hard to complete them to our satisfaction and even made himself available on a weekend. Both my husband and I work from home so that afforded us flexibility with the schedule. We plan on hiring Tom again for future projects.

A few days ago I had a new stove delivered while they delivered it to my kitchen they suddenly said that the connection required a license electrician. Thank God for Thumbtack and Mike. He answered quickly what's Pleasant and efficient with a sense of humor and was here all of 20 minutes. I would recommend his work to anyone who is tired of contractors who take hours to do a simple task or who overcharged I felt that his rate was good and I fully intend to use him again if I have additional electrical needs. He's on the permanent Rolodex

Our flooring issue was complicated. Pet damage (urine) had to be addressed and permanently fixed. We moved from expensive carpeting to high-end waterproof vinyl flooring (lumber Liquidators). Removal, replacement of sound/insulation board, installation of new flooring and all trim work was meticulously done to perfection! We could not be happier..highly recommend this contractor.

After interviewing a couple of contractors, we were thrilled to find Chris. He was always prompt, professional, and reasonably priced. Our basement went from a concrete unfinished space, to a beautiful new room for our family to enjoy. Chris is an excellent craftsman, and he made sure that the new renovation fit beautifully with our historic 1700's home. We highly recommend Chris.

Project: Build an Addition, concrete driveway, stamped pavement!! Hiring Jim Forbes (Forbes Associates, LLC) was one of the best moves my husband John and I ever made. He took our major project of building a stick built garage, built a staircase from the 1st floor to the basement, a stamped concrete driveway, walkway, sidewalks and paving a sidewalk for our new residence in Hamilton Township and he ran with it. We have never been so happy with the outcome of our project. He and his staff were very knowledgeable, professional and a pleasure to work with. He treated my husband and I like he would his own family. Jim kept his timelines as promised, handled all the township paperwork involved, and was very reasonable and honest about the proposals he gave us up front for the entire project. We have had several bad experiences in the past with our project and he cleaned everything up for us. We did the right thing by meeting with Jim and hiring him as our General Contractor. We would highly recommend him, and appreciate his honesty and integrity that he puts into his work. We love the new additions to our beautiful home!!! Thank you Jim and crew!! Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

    What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

    • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
    • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
    • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
    • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.

Be sure to check out our smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
