David and his team were excellent from start to finish. Scheduling with David was easy, he was able to accommodate my timing issues with closing on my home and moving the same day. Their price was excellent and the movers who came were fantastic. The 4 man team moved quickly and cautiously packing the truck then emptying it into my home. They were very friendly and constantly asked if I needed anything else. I would highly recommend this company to anyone who asks.

With short notice, the team of Rasheed and Raheem were able to help us move from our home and get through the the streets of South Philly with ease. They took great care of the items they were moving and double checked on anything if unsure. Highly recommend them to anyone needing movers.

Promised to show up at 6pm sharp. They showed up at 5:50pm sharp, I can really appreciate people who promise to show up at a certain time then show up a little earlier. I have never moved on my own before with so much stuff so when I stumbled on Thumbtack, it was a great way to find movers who could accomadate my needs. Cruz was the first one to respond to me probably around 45 seconds after I submitted my inquiry, no pressure, a lot of info, a perfect 100% rating thus far. Everytime I messaged Cruz a question, it was a less than 10 minutes to respond. I really appreciate that, all our discussions was full of politeness and respect. When they showed up, Cruz and Keith didn't hesitate to introduce themselves and ask what they could help with and what I needed to move. They offered a lot of good suggestions on what to move first and how. They professionally and quickly took apart my big furnitures and put it together again quickly and easily. I am extremely impressed with their hard work and experience in moving. I felt so bad because the unit I was moving out of and the new one I was moving into had weird turns for the hallways and staircases, yet they completed the move as quickly as possible with zero complaints and smiles on their faces. In terms of their prices, I saw many other people with $105-$150 an hour but I never would have guessed my move would take around 7 hours, so for the price Cruz charges it's MORE than worth it. I would recommend Cruz Moves 110% if you want professional, respectful, prompt, and hardworking movers for all your needs.

I contacted Moyer's with a last-minute request and they were able to accommodate in less than 24 hours notice at an extremely affordable price! I know that we got lucky and they just happened to have people available to help us on such short notice but they could have easily said they were unavailable or quoted us an extremely high rate. We were moving out of a home we lived in for 25 years and believed we could move everything ourselves with a pickup truck and a SUV. As a way to try to encourage them to be our movers, we rented a U-Haul and they did all the heavy lifting. I'm so grateful for the team at Moyer's because without them, we would not have been able to get everything out! I just wish we booked them sooner!! Also, the whole crew was absolutely pleasant to be around; thoughtful, caring, helpful - the exact qualities you're looking for when looking for people to handle even you're most fragile possessions! Would highly recommend Moyer's for all your moving needs!

Two young men showed up on the day of my move and was a little worried. They were young and a little on the smaller side. BUT, they were awesome at what they were doing. They had technique and worked very well together. I had some big bulky items that needed to be moved from the third floor of my home to the first floor. They did it better then the grown burly professional men that moved me into my home. Very professional and efficient. When they show up at your door don't judge a book by its cover. These young men know what they are doing. Not a scratch or dent in my furniture or walls.

My experience with John Carson Relocation was related to a long distance (1000 miles) move of household goods, tools, and yard equipment. Mr. Carson is a friendly and straight forward person. He was always on time, and kept in contact with me throughout the planning, loading, and moving so there were no surprises or worries about the timing of activities. He has integrity with regard to taking care of his customers' goods and their property. In the case where some damage did occur, he was quick to acknowledge it and 100% willing to make things right. He also went the "extra mile" to mail a piece of hardware that, unknown to everyone (including me) at the time of unloading, came off a furniture item and ended up going back to Pennsylvania on the truck. My only criticism of the move would be that I believe more care could have been applied to the moving of large furniture pieces (especially a piano). This includes the physical moving from the house to the truck and the blanketing of the items prior to removal from the house. John was short-handed during the pick-up and unloading due to some people having the flu. Not having enough help made the job more difficult and made protection of the furniture less than it should have been. That said, with roughly 45 moving boxes of items shipped along with the furniture pieces, all the boxed items arrived in good shape with no blemishes or damage of any kind.

Jose and Anthony were extremely courteous, hardworking and efficient! My move was scheduled for the morning, but their truck broke down so they didn’t arrive until 12:45pm. However, they communicated with me the entire morning as to their ETA. The move ended up being longer than expected due to navigating long hallways and bad weather, however they never once stopped to take a break (although I wouldn’t have faulted them for it as it was a 10-hour day!) They are fun people and made me feel at ease as it was my first time moving alone. My belongings were treated with care and nothing was damaged. I wouldn’t hesitate to use their services again or to recommend them to family or friends! - [ ]

Adam and Mike helped me and my wife move our home from Allentown to Bethlehem. They showed up on time, worked extremely hard, and were very professional and courteous. As a bonus, they were very personable and a pleasure to work with. The time that the move took was very close to the estimate Adam and I worked up when we scheduled the move, so the total bill was pretty much what we expected. All of our belongings arrived safely. Although I hope to never move again, if I do need a mover's services in the future I'll call these gentlemen first.

I don't usually write reviews but Robert did a wonderful job and I'm compelled to write a review. Robert did an excellent job in delivering furniture we bought from a local store. It was a heavy piece (solid wood big TV stand with fireplace), and Robert and Carl knew how to handle it well. Robert was very responsive from the time I got in touch with him. Everything was communicated well in advance and I knew what to expect. He was punctual (actually was few minutes early). After setting the TV stand in place, they helped taking the packaging to the garage. They also helped moving my old TV stand and TV two flights of stairs. Very pleased with the overall experience. Would hire him again without any hesitation and would recommend him to friends and family.

Very polite and helpful, punctual, performed work promised. Could have brought appropriate help for piano moving, could have protected drawers instead of just stacking inside each other. They got paint on the washer door that rubbed against something (front load) but it will come off. Overall good reliable service.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much does it cost to move across the country?

The national average cost for hiring cross-country movers is $1,490-$2,220. A number of factors can affect the cost. One factor is the distance you want to move. For example, an East Coast-based moving company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. Another factor is how many belongings you have. Most cross-country movers charge by the cubic foot.

The type of move you want is another consideration in cost. You can have your belongings moved exclusively and delivered on a set day, or you can opt for a consolidated move, which is less expensive. In a consolidated move your belongings are stored and transported with the goods of other customers who are moving to your general vicinity during the same general time frame as you. Your belongings should arrive within a one- to two-week window, rather than on a set day. If you want the cross-country movers to pack your belongings for you, the cost will also increase.
