Introduction: I'm a friendly music teacher with an extensive knowledge of music theory and many styles of music. I've been playing musical instruments for most of my life and have been performing professionally for over 10 years. In 2008, I earned a Bachelor's degree in Jazz Performance from the University of the Arts, where I studied bass and piano. I offer lessons in piano, guitar, and bass. I have a private teaching space in Upper Bucks County and also offer in-home lessons in Philadelphia and the surrounding areas. Learning good technique and practice habits are very important, but I also strive to make lessons enjoyable. Music should be fun! I make sure to take my students' musical preferences into consideration and will often spend extra time in between lessons preparing material that suits the student's taste. I've been playing acoustic guitar for years but have been taking lessons with Lee to have a better understanding and improve my skills playing lead guitar. Lee's a great teacher, patient and great at explaining things. I'm learning a whole lot about music theory that I never knew before and how to apply it. He also has great suggestions about how to make practice fun.

Our son had a great connection with lee; he felt very comfortable with him and lee was very encouraging in a more laid back way. When our son lost a bit of interest practicing at one point, lee asked him about a few of his favorite songs and began to teach him those to draw his attention back- very creative! Very reasonable cost too!

My 8yr old son has been taking piano lessons with Lee for almost 2 yrs. We could not be more pleased! Lee is a very talented musician who shares his enthusiasm with his students. He is very kind and patient while still expecting the most from my son. My son looks forward to his piano lesson each week. He even loves theory! I am amazed with how far my son has come already and it is to the credit of his great teacher. We would recommend Lee Clarke to anyone who has a love for music and would like to become more knowledgable and successful in it!

While I live in the Washington, D.C. area and normally take weekly guitar lessons there, when I'm in the Bucks County area I always try to schedule a guitar lesson with Lee. He is an accomplished musician and a terrific teacher. He is focused on the music and attentive to subtle details. He often offers practical, and sometimes unique, ideas for working on skills and techniques that need improvement. I always feel that my lessons with Lee are very productive!!!

FAQs

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
Usually a phone conversation will determine if it is a good fit and a first lesson is scheduled. The first lesson can vary widely, but we will get to know each other a little bit and I'll get the student to play something to see where they're at. If it's an absolute beginner, we will still play something on the first lesson. I will typically have some suggestions on technique and show the student a song and/or some exercises to work on until the next lesson. Good practice habits are also discussed at the first lesson.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
BA in jazz performance from University of the Arts. I've studied privately with many of Philadelphia's top musicians including Micah Jones, Steve Beskrone, Tony Miceli, Craig Thomas, Neil Podgurski, Dave Hartl.
How did you get started doing this type of work?
I started teaching while still in College and found that I really liked helping others understand how music works. Just as I had earlier become fixated on learning everything I could about playing music, I set out to be the best teacher I could be by immersing myself in ideas and methods for how to teach effectively. Since then I've kept a roster of private students of all ages and skill levels with diverse goals and needs.
