We needed help removing unwanted materials at our home before we moved. Called Ralph in the evening and he was at our house the next day and took everything we needed to dispose of. Could not have asked for better service.

From the start Cliff was very quick to respond and come out to provide me an estimate for my drywall installation and finishing project. His work quality was great, he had to work around some additional items from another contractor who did less than quality work. This created additional work for Cliff, but he was very open to helping and providing me with some relief to ensure it was done as needed. Cliff ended up taking on some additional work while he was here when the same before mentioned contractor didn't complete all the work he had previously agreed to. Cliff graciously gave me an estimate and was willing to step in to assist! This work included installing all of the window/door and base board trim, caulking of the trim and some additional drywall finishing, painting and caulking to my second floor renovation. All was done very quickly and without issue at a very fair cost to me! I was so pleased with his work that I gave him an additional bonus for all his hard work. I would highly recommend Cliff and Davis Handyman Home Improvement Services for any of your needs! I am selling my home but if I buy again in the area will be sure to use Cliff again in the future. Thank you Cliff for a job well done!

We had Frank and his crew work on our home recently. The outside stairwell to our basement was bulging and cracking after 45 years of weathering. He pointed out several cracks in the concrete covering our foundation as well and stated that he would be more concerned about that then the stairwell. They rebuilt the outer wall of the stairwell, parged the foundation blocks and replaced several bricks in the front of our home. They did an excellent job of the work, but what most impressed us just as much as the quality of work was his communications. We experienced a lot of rain and a job that should have taken less than a week stretched out to over two weeks. You can't pour concrete in the rain. Frank sent us daily emails with the potential schedule for the next day. I will highly recommend Frank and FW Masonry for anyone and any project.

Benjamin Rodriguez contacted us immediately, and we were able to set up a consultation within 3 days. He was prompt, knowledgeable, and very friendly during the home visit, and he identified the source of our problem right away. Even though this was just a small job, he treated us with respect and agreed to the job. We will definitely call Rodriguez Construction Services for our home improvement job, and would highly recommend them to others!

Nothing but good things to say about Balco Landscapes! I had just completed two projects with separate big name contractors and the experiences were both horrible. Had I not been on home on several occasions, the work these other contractors did would have been done wrong and not to spec. So I was a bit uneasy when I realized that due to my work schedule, I would not be home for the entirety of the landscaping project with Balco. But, Balco Landscapes showed up every day, on time, and did the work they quoted. The work itself is stunning! The installed 2 flagstone patios over concrete base, a separate stacked stone retaining wall, and landscaped a garden bed horribly overgrown with weeds and planted agreed upon plants. Also planted a dogwood in the very back of the yard. Balco also pulled the necessary permits from Baltimore City (which in itself is no easy task). They quoted 2 weeks to complete the project and they finished in 1 week and 3 days. Harry and his team were nothing but courteous and professional from the moment they showed up in person to discuss design and requirements, through to the project's completion. The morning after the day in which it looked as though everything had been completed, I spoke directly with Harry to make sure they were done so I could finalize payment. Indeed they were... but Harry was already on his way to my house to shore up a joint line in one of the patios that "he wasn't happy with." I didn't ask him to do it... i didn't even recognize what he was talking about... but he came out on his own to take care of it. That is owning your workmanship. And that is respect for the homeowner. This is how working with contractors should always be!! They are already my decided choice for some additional work I'll have done in a few months. If you have landscaping needs, you'll be in good hands with Balco! A+ across the board.

Jeff Stottlemeyer of Jeffhomepro was recommended to me by a home stager/designer, and I am pleased to highly recommend Jeff for your home improvement needs. Jeff was instrumental in preparing my home for sale in 2015. Major projects, included painting the interior of my 3200+ square foot house and refurbishing my large deck. He also did landscaping work in my Asian-themed garden. His work was consistently of the highest quality and reflected close attention to detail. I could always rely on Jeff to show up when he said he would, ready to get to work. Projects were completed in a timely manner. His rates were reasonable and very competitive. My house presented beautifully to potential buyers, and I credit that to Jeff's work. I would definitely use his services again, and have recommended him to friends and family members.

We are very pleased with the work done by them on our patio roof. Even with some additional work we requested that they do, changing out a window to a sliding glass door , it was done professionally and on time. Tom and his crew were very respectful and hard working and cleaned up every day. We will request this company to do some other work for us in the future. I would recommend them to others needing work done on their home.

Nate was very personable and came out to my home promptly to give me an estimate on a new roof. I was impressed on his knowledge on roofing and felt he was someone we could trust to do the job. Although due to my own circumstances I was unable to work with him, he would be the first person id call or recommend to someone who needs a new roof or repairs. He is someone I would trust for the job.

From the first time Brandon contacted me he was very attentive to my needs. Brandon was very honest and upfront about pricing and his turn around time. I wasn’t sure about the way I wanted to go with certain details of the shower install that I needed. Brandon sent me ideas with pictures and was very helpful. Brandon is very personable and easy to work with and his pricing is great. He does very nice work and we are extremely pleased with the quality of work that he has done for us. I would highly recommend Brandon and will keep him in mind the next time I need a home improvement job completed.

It was really great working with Mike! We’ve worked with him on several projects around our home and garage, and each one has ended with huge smiles on the faces of myself, and my wife. He was even really insightful on ways we could save a little money, which was extremely appreciated. When it comes to our next projects, we’ll definitely be calling on him to help!

The contractors arrived on time everyday. They kept me informed of the plan and progress and when more extensive damage was discovered, they explained what would need to be done and estimated costs quickly. I was actually on site when the extensive damage was discovered, but I also reduced a call from Mark with pictures to show what needed to be addressed. He was also ready with an estimate of the additional work. Even texting June late in the evening after the workers left received and immediate reply. I have full confidence that my project was done well and correctly. I was very impressed with the attention to detail and willingness to explain each step of the process. When they left, they cleaned up after themselves completely and it looked like no one had ever been there (except for the beautiful siding and windows). We will definitely be hiring William Penn Renovation again for future projects.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

How much does it cost to remodel a bathroom?

Nationally, the average cost of bathroom remodeling is $14,000. Bathroom remodels can vary widely, from standard makeovers to luxurious master bathroom revamps. The factors that affect your bathroom remodeling cost are the finishes you choose (marble tiles can cost 20 times as much as standard subway tiles), the square footage of the project, regional labor rates in your area and the scope of work. Changing the layout or size of the bathroom will also raise costs. Moving electrical wiring and plumbing lines will also dramatically increase costs, as you’ll need to hire plumbers and electricians to handle the work. What’s happening behind your walls and under your floor will also affect bathroom remodeling cost: Rot, damage or mold can lead to additional work and charges. Overall, bathroom remodeling may offer great return on investment and also improve your daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom remodeling costs:

  • 6-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $3,500, including labor and materials.
  • Standard renovation: $6,500-$10,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased. Labor may include taking out the shower and shower pan, installing new shower pan and shower, and installing new door, new vanity, new mirror, new bathroom fan, and all new fixtures.
    • Price variation depends on the quality of the finishes.
  • 10-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $7,200, including labor and materials.
  • Mid-range renovation: $12,000-$15,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased.
  • Upscale renovation: $35,000 and up. Price includes labor and materials. Items might include digital displays for fixtures, multiple shower heads and custom showers.
