My A/C unit stopped blowing as hard as it used to and wasn't cooling off my house. I got on Thumbtack and got a response from him within minutes. After initial contact, he made it out within several hours the same day. He was very professional and very courteous. After assessing the issue, he actually took the time to explain the interworkings of my A/C unit. He explained how it worked and what he thought the problem was. I really appreciated him taking the time to explain it all to me. The issue ended up not being an easy fix. He spent about four hours trying to fix it the first day. At the end of the day, we ended up having to turn it off to let the huge block of ice that had formed on the coil completely melt. The next day he made it back out by late afternoon. After about 2 hours, he had my A/C working again. I was scared the price was going to be outrageous considering he spent about 7 hours in total working on it. However, the bill was extremely reasonable! I even threw in a little extra. I would highly recommend D&R to my friends and family. I appreciate all his hard work and time he spent fixing our A/C.

They were quickly able to identify the problem and make the necessary fixes, at a super-reasonable price. They were able to complete the work within mere days after the posting of the project on Thumbtack. Very pleased with my experience, will use them again for any HVAC on our new house.

Connecting with Sean and having him do a service call was a wonderful decision. I made contact around noon and he was at my house on the same day at 5:30pm. My air conditioner was fixed by 6:00PM!! He was there on time, worked quickly and then gave me some free advice on how to make the upstairs of my house cooler. Outstanding experience. I will never use anyone other than Home HVAC Services for all of my heating and cooling needs.

I needed heating and cooling to be provided in my basement for my mother in law since she moved in. Brad from Hughes Mechanical contacted me with a more efficient solution of a ductless HVAC system. Price was reasonable and work was completed in a timely fashion. My mother in law is enjoying her unit, especially during these frigid temperatures.

I am extremely satisfied with the work done by Jason of JC Mechanical Heating and Cooling. He is very professional, knowledgeable, and dedicated to his work. He responded to any emails or texts right away. The a/c installation at my house was not easy because the ductwork was in the crawl space. Jason worked very hard every day to get the job done without even taking lunch breaks! Jason also took the time to explain everything he was doing along the way. I appreciate that. I highly recommend J C Mechanical Heating and Cooling.

We had a leak in a copper pipe in our baseboard heating - but it happened on New Years Eve. We called the big names that advertise 24/7 emergency service, Horizon and Roto-Rooter, and neither had anyone to send. So those ads are false. Desparate as we were, we stumbled across Thumbtack, posted our problem, and within minutes received a reply from Phil. He offered to come that night to at least turn off the water and return to fix in the morning. This despite his living 30 minutes from us. We decided to wait (we needed to keep the heat on) and stayed up all night dumping water. Next day, Phil showed up on time, saw the problem and gave us a fixed price for the job before starting. We thought the price was reasonable (because we've used many plumbers before for other leaks) and accepted. Phil did a fantastic job. He was probably at our house for 5 hours. He didn't leave until everything was just so - purging air from our lines so the heat would work better. I can't say enough good things - he was a life saver. I doubt we would have found anyone to come New Year's Day, and if we did, we would have been charged through the roof. Thanks Phil - Happy New Year! Best of Luck.

Kurt was amazing. I met him through thumbtack and he ended up replacing my entire heating unit. He was originally going to put a bandaid on it but that didn’t work. He explained everything to me and there was NO PRESSURE whatsoever. He took time to explain different options and the pros and cons. I would compare the expierkence to if a friend was helping you and really trying to give you the best deal and options. I ended up having to go out of state while he replaced the heating unit. I trusted him in my house and he took care of everything. I had a few others companies come out and all they wanted to do was sell me their most expensive unit. Give him a shot. I recommended him to my mom and will continue to recommend him to anyone else who asks. Don’t use the large companies use Kurt.

This company was great. They were busy and scheduled us a few weeks out but called back with a sooner appointment. They communicated with me throughout and preformed the service quickly and efficiently. I was happy with their customer service and the price paid. They even did extra services: cleaned our dryer vent and serviced our heater. I was very happy!

We've had our air conditioner serviced in the past 20+ years and no one ever fixed the problem we complained about. That is the vent not cooling our bedroom for my husband's COPD problem. Chesapeake Heating & Cooling solved the problem immediately and will surely call them for any future service calls. He was professional, polite and knew what he was doing compared to all the others we had in the past. Thanks and now my husband can sleep better due to the solved problem. Mrs. Myers

I own an 1860 farm house with hot water radiator heat and no ductwork for central air. After interviewing and getting bids by 3 other air conditioning contractors, I called Universal Air LLC in Morgantown, PA. Bill Leone spent 2 hours with me explaining in detail everything the project would entail. He also offered what I felt was a very competitive price for a 16 seer Trane air conditioner which included the air handler, and installation of all duct work. The work crew did a great job, made every effort to be neat and cleaned up before leaving at the end of each day. Took about 6 days to complete. Very satisfied with their work!

About

Our entire company is excited to work in the temperature and air control business, and we look forward to serving you! Priority Rental focuses on 3 things: product, service and relationships. We focus on temporary portable temperature and air control. We carry various models of Spot Coolers, from 1.2 ton and 1.5 ton, that plug into a standard 120V outlet, to 25 tons and above. Remember, air conditioning also acts as a dehumidifier! Our temporary heat offerings include 40,000 BTU to 2.5 million BTU, electric, propane, natural gas, or diesel fired. We also provide negative air machines, dehumidifiers, industrial fans, misters, and evaporative coolers. Evaporative coolers, often referred to as swamp coolers, effectively and efficiently drop the temperature of an open space by up to 20 degrees by pulling the cool air out of water. These units can operate while connected to a water source or without a water source, as some have a built-in reservoir. They operate on 120V and cost very little to operate. These units work great at a warehouse, loading dock, outdoor event, or in a tent. They are not intended to "air condition," but they will drop the temperature by up to 25 degrees in just a few minutes. A great alternative to weekly or monthly rentals is Contracted Seasonal Service (CSS). This service allows you to select the size of an area to be controlled, and we will always keep enough specific equipment on hand for you and your company only. You do not need to take possession of the units, as we store the units for you. We promise to have this equipment available for the length of your CSS. We deliver to and pick up at the location you need them, and we will install if necessary. Our customers have found great success and value in this service. Contact us for more details. Let me know if there is anything else I can provide for you. All of our employees are on call 24/7! If you can't reach us in the office, try our cellphone or the 800 number.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

  • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
  • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
  • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
  • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
    • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
  • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
    • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
  • Your home has humidity problems.
  • Your home has excessive dust.
    • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
  • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
    • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
  • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
    • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.

How much will it cost me to replace my furnace?

The national average for furnace replacement is between $1,800 and $2,500. The cost can range dramatically higher depending on the model of furnace you select, any repair work you require, your location and the cost of installation. Furnace installation costs can be more than the furnace itself due to the cost of doing business and the expertise needed to install the HVAC equipment. Installing a new furnace generally requires technical know-how and the proper tools and licensing. It’s best to hire a pro and budget for furnace installation rather than risk potentially unsafe DIY installation. This will ensure your home’s safety. Check to see if your HVAC contractor has the proper licensing to do the job. If you need duct repair or replacement, expect to pay more for your furnace installation costs. The price for duct repair could be an hourly rate ranging on average anywhere from $85 to $150 per hour, with additional costs for parts.

How much does it cost to get central air?

Prices for central-air HVAC systems will vary. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670 but can run as high as $5,000 or even $12,000 depending on the capacity you need and other factors. Installing central air conditioning requires an entire system that works together to draw hot air out of your home. The system includes an outdoor unit, which houses the condenser and compressor, and the evaporator coils. If you don’t have an existing duct system, ductwork will need to be installed, which will affect labor and material costs. Leaking or damaged ducts will also need to be replaced.
