Marvin was great! He gave me a very competitive quote for a full home paint job (wallpaper removal in 3 rooms) and was able to come the very next day for an estimate. I looked at about 4 painters and Marvin definitely is the best deal. He will be starting on my home at the end of the month- I can't wait!

Joe has done various work for us throughout a 14 year period. He has worked on 2 different homes for us and has painted the exterior of one and the entire interiors of both houses. In both homes Joe removed tons of old wallpaper, including wallpaper from ceilings and painted the entire interiors. He has also removed popcorn ceiling finish for us. The most recent project Joe finished for us was this Spring where he removed wallpaper and did all the interior painting of the second home we had recently purchased. There was some construction being done on the home while Joe was working and he coordinated with them so the work got done and everyone could keep working. Joe is honest, reliable and knows what he is doing. He checks his work against various light to make sure nothing is missed. He is neat so I don't find a bunch of little paints spots to clean up later. He also pointed out that there were window frames that were leaking and the frames were soft, the house inspector didn't even find that, so we were glad Joe found it and let us know before we had a much bigger problem. Next year when we paint the exterior of this house I'm calling Joe!

Hired them to remove wallpaper, prep and paint about 1500 square feet of my new home. They worked very fast (which was much appreciated!) and their work was high quality. They stuck exactly to their original estimate and cleaned up thoroughly before they left.

AR Papering & Painting (Tony) was fantastic! He was extremely contentious and detailed with the wallpapering and painting project he did in our home. Everything looks even more beautiful than we imagined it to be. Tony is completely trustworthy, and we highly recommend him!

Joseph painted my family room, a bedroom and small hallway. Took less than 3 days working alone which I thought was good time. He was thorough and suggestedsome items to make the job more professional. He was right. He was courteous to all in the house, and I would recommend him to any of my friends. He even started the job on a Saturday so I could get the job done before having my floor installed. He's a good guy. Hire him if you can.

Donna completed a huge interior paint project to prep For Sale our 30+ year family home. Her price was quite reasonable. The QUALITY of her work was outstanding, including difficult wallpaper removal and wall resurfacing. We were delighted by her use of premium materials and strong attention to detail. Best Decision we made pertaining to our Move was hiring Donna.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is the best way to remove wallpaper?

There are several proven methods for wallpaper removal; each has its pros and cons, but some are definitely easier. Peeling is usually the least painful, followed by soaking and stripping. Dry-stripping is the next most time-consuming, and steaming the most work. The average wallpaper removal job costs between $360 and $560. The method of removal can affect the cost, as steaming takes longer than peeling and will therefore typically cost more. Peeling wallpaper off is usually the quickest method. To see if your wallpaper can be peeled off, try gently edging up a corner and carefully peeling the paper off the wall in strips. If you can’t peel, then you’ll have to score and strip it, either by dry-stripping or by soaking and then stripping. Plaster walls can withstand moisture and can stand up to soaking and stripping, but drywall should not be soaked. For very stubborn wallpaper, steaming may be necessary, which is time-consuming but effective. If you prefer not to attempt these methods yourself, wallpaper removal pros have the proper tools and experience to quickly take down wallpaper and also repair any damage to your walls.

How much does it cost to remove wallpaper in a room?

The national wallpaper removal cost averages $360-$560, which will typically include multiple rooms. Pros often charge by the square foot to remove egregious wallpaper that is long past its prime. Wallpaper removal cost may range anywhere from 60 cents to $1.50 or more per square foot. A pro may estimate removal costs ranging between $160 and $300 for a medium-sized room. Costs can vary due to ceiling height, and some pros add a skim coat to make repainting or re-papering smoother. Here are some examples of average costs to remove wallpaper:

  • Foyer: 36-120 square feet, $21.60-$180.
  • Powder room: 16-36 square feet, $9.60-$54.
  • Living or dining room: 120-252 square feet, $72-$378.
  • Family room: 192-384 square feet, $115.20-$576.
  • Bedroom: 100-224 square feet, $60-$336.
  • Guest bath: 45-84 square feet, $27-$126.
  • Master bedroom: 168-384 square feet, $100.80-$576.
  • Master bath: 54-160 square feet, $32.40-$240.

Once the old wallpaper is gone, the average cost to install new wallpaper is $240-$350.
