BackYard Innovations was professional and completed the work in a timely fashion. I was experiencing water coming in through my basement walls. Luis came and presented several options for waterproofing my home. I'm very satisfied and happy with the work I would recommend them to any home owner or business!

It was a pleasure to work with Leo. Very pleased with his understanding of my unique project (preparing a house to sell w/o going overboard & $ crazy). He was able to address many things from repairing composite deck issues to painting kitchen cabinets, painting and repairing walls of multiple textures, bathroom work, basement cleaning and plumbing, new doors, etc.

I hired Austin to clean out my father's house (the accumulation of ~60 years of "stuff") and from our first interaction to the last, he was highly professional, pleasant, responsive, and punctual. I had to trust the person/company that I hired because I live four hours away. We met and walked through the house, he contacted me that evening with a quote, and came back the next day for a key. Austin and his crew completed the work in two days (including scraping and painting a workshop in the basement). We kept in touch via text, and my realtor checked the work once everything was completed. I would highly recommend Austin for estate clean out work!

We hired Accurate Pro to remove an old utility sink with a leaking drain from the basement and install a new sink. The old sink was concrete and needed to be broken apart/destroyed. They cleaned up after themselves very well, and the new sink looks great.

I know Cliff and use his services for the last 10 years. As a single woman I periodically end up in disaster that needs emergency intervention. I always count on Cliff and I know he will do his possible best and super job. He did electrical job for my basement and garage, fixed plumbing and leakage in the bathroom, fixed number of kitchen and laundry room problems, compose furniture, assemble and put on shelves on the walls, completely replaced outdated and broken light pol on a front yard of my house. Besides great job and high quality to his work, he is an "old school" in his working ethics of discipline and responsibility. Rear quality in our days! I recommend him to my friends, family members and even my employer without any reservations and everybody were very satisfied. Hire Cliff you will get 5 star quality service! Irena C. (Whitehall)

The upper part of backyard had been neglected about 10 years. a maple cut then had brown into 5 trees making too much shade and a danger for electric wires. Eric worked with a good young arborist on the weekend for no extra charge and a very reasonable price. They took precautions to protect a young plant close by and worked efficiently. On Monday he came back with his crew and cleaned the whole backyard and howled the trees to the smallest debris. They even did a thorough leaves cleanup. I was amazed to see how well and fast they worked. Eric was so pleasant, listened, communicated so well that I hired them to clean our basement.

I had water leaking into my basement through the walls and had Keystone come and give me an estimate. I thought the estimate was fair so I hired them to do the job. The crew, Tony, Charlie and Mike came on the specified date and started the job. They ran into problems because of the amount of water they encountered when they started the trench. Since they had so much water to contend with they had to come back the next day to complete. They completed the job, cleaned up, left very little dust. My wife and I hardly knew they were there after they finished with the jackhammering. The job was done during a particularly rainy period, (early Jan., 2017) and I have yet to see any water in my basement. Before they came my basement would be covered with water. I can say, as of this time (1 month in), I have had no problems and so far this has been the best experience I have ever had with a contractor. I can't compliment them enough.

We hired Tri-Capital to complete multiple projects for us on our new home. They replaced the roof on deck, replaced the fascia on house, installed a drop ceiling in basement, and also converted a storage room into a half bath within the basement. I was extremely impressed with the quality of work, communication, and timeliness that Tri-Capital showed. They completed all work ahead of schedule and stayed within budget. I would highly recommend them for any work that you may need done on your home. Thanks again to the Tri-Capital Crew. Go Cowboys!!

He knew what needed to be done to complete the job the way it should be done. Old trailor roof had elastomeric on which cracked and blistered. Dave power washed surface, removed loose elastomeric, patched places that were removed, applied new sealant. Applying second coat today. Would recommend Dave to anyone

Tom was very professional and knowledgeable about flooring; what was done incorrectly by the former contractor and how to best fix it. He is easy to talk to and offered to begin the job within two days. He called when he said he would, showed up when he said he would and finished in a timely manner. His work is excellent. We plan to hire Tom again when we need more flooring done and even to finish our basement ceiling next year.

Jim remodeled my back porch and converted it to an office as well as adding a small deck and stairs, tore out my exterior concrete basement steps, poured a new set and finished them off with double exterior doors. I couldn't be more pleased with the workmanship and finished product. He's my first call for my next project.

Requested a ballpark figure to repair the stairs and railing used to access my basement. Mr. Kirby responded quickly and with an almost perfect approximation of the final material and labor costs. Once he scoped out the project and talked with me about the specifications, I gave him the go-ahead to begin the work. The price, timeframe, and quality of craftsmanship were all to my satisfaction. Mr. Kirby is an excellent carpenter who does good work. I support Mr. Kirby's business by letting others know of the positive experience I had when I hired him to do this job.

I recently hired First Choice Flooring and Installation to put carpet in my new town house. I had them come for an estimate, give me a quote ( which was way better than other companies quoted me) bring their own materials and start the project, all in such a timely manner! Joseph, the owner, stopped by to introduce himself and make sure his guys were running efficiently, but still keeping the top notch quality that they pride themselves on..and I can assure you that they definetly were! I would recommend them to anyone and already have! My own mother hired them for bamboo wood on her whole upstairs and carpet in the basement and absolutly raved about Joseph and First Choice! thanks again!

I was looking for a contractor to parge my basement wall and contacted Keith through thumbtack. I was able to talk to him immediately upon receipt of his email and schedule a next morning appointment for my job. Upon arrival, he went right to work and finished the job quickly. The work was very professional and he cleaned up at the end of the job. I thought that his charge was fair and reasonable for the service that he provided. He also let me know that he will stand behind his work if a problem would develop. I was also pleased to find out that he has others working for him that specialize in work other than just concrete and Keystone Restoration Solutions can offer these other services when I need them. I can highly recommend Keith and his company and look forward to using his services again in the future.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

    What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

    • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
    • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
    • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
    • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
