We hired Frank to paint the exterior of our brick home, add shutters and refinish the existing wood front door. Frank and his team were honest, hard working, very detailed and made our house the best looking on the street! I will definitely use him again for future projects.

My wife and I hired Leo recently to help us demo a kitchen and dining room to move forward with a remodel. He showed up on time to give us a bid, which was quite reasonable, then returned the next day to remove 2 large radiators, remove flooring, and move a built in cabinet. He was communicative and professional and we plan to keep using his services throughout our project.

Love, love, love Jason's work. He turned an entire wall of cabinets into a more useable space including a large refrigerator that would not originally fit. Highly recommended.

Tom recently installed glass wall tiles under my kitchen cabinets. He took great care and made extensive preparations to make sure the tiles lined up properly around the windows and electrical plugs. The job took a little longer than he anticipated due to the complicated nature of the small tiles with pattern that I chose but the results were worth it. I appreciated how he cleaned up after finishing work each day. I would definitely recommend Tom based on this experience with his work.

I was very pleased considering I had not used Thumbtack in the past. Jeff and Stephen completed our two bedroom flooring refinishing very professionally and did a wonderful job. They have the right equipment keeping the dust and dirt to a minimum when you are remodeling floors in a home you are living in. I hope to have our additional living space floors re-finished in the future and will bring them back when and if so. You can count on SEC services for a job well done! Thank you!

We got several bids on refinishing our wood floors. We originally chose another company to the floors. Their price was much lower than or other bids. Our floor turned out awful, ruff and blotchy. So I call A1 to come out and see if they could be fixed. Jason said he could fix the damage done by the other guy at the price he originally quoted us. We decided to to give it one lsst shot. Wow! He did it in half the time it took the other contractor, and they are absoutly smooth with a beautiful even color. I guess when it comes to your floors you really get what you pay for and all flooring companies are not created equal.

Chad was easy to work with. He did a great job of taking up my old carpeting and tack boards. He was careful not to damage the floor underneath. He bundled the carpet for trash pick up, cleaned up the area and replaced the furniture. We discussed two future projects. Highly recommend!

Cliff did every remodel job we had had done to our home since we first hired him in 2001. Some of the projects were: • New kitchen cabinets sink and appliances • Extra bath in the basement • Remodel of the basement and utility room • Move washer and dryer from utility room to the 2nd floor • Installation of hardware floors in all rooms replacing wall to wall carpet • total remodel of the master bath that included installing a skylight • Ceramic tile installation in front foyer and all bathrooms • Countless maintence projects too numerous to mention Cliff's work is is awesome. He has exceeded our expectations with all the work he has done. We won't even consider using anyone else. Cliff is the ultimate professional. He is meticulous, thorough and pays attention to the details.

Disaster evaded. I couldn't be happier. My refurbished deck looks like new and is stronger and safer than new. I had a large deck, approximately 20 years old, that was ill-maintained by the previous owner and was long overdue for a major overhaul. The horizontal surfaces were rotted, pitted, splitting and splintering. I thought I needed to replace the flooring and railing with better material than pressure treated wood. I was shocked when I priced the TREX decking material necessary for what I had in mind. I consulted Ron whom I knew from our mutual interest in a charity. He discussed options and savings opportunities with me. I went with his suggestions which resulted in an extremely reasonable cost for the refurbishment. He reworked, sanded and was able to save about half the pressure treated decking. He replaced the other half with new boards. And he replaced the top surface of the railing with brightly colored TREX that provided a nice highlighting effect once Ron had cleaned and painted the entire deck. It looked like a new deck when he was done. But all that shines is not gold. In doing his due diligence, Ron checked beneath the surface (See example of what he found). The six major posts that support the deck were rotted to the core. It was only a matter of time before the deck, its contents and occupants went tumbling down. Ron provided a deep concrete foundation that extended above ground level for each post and did so at a very reasonable price while giving me the confidence that this deck is now safe and built to last. Due to Ron's diligence and professionalism, my family and I dodged a bullet. He is a highly experienced and proficient workman of exceptional character. I highly recommend him to anyone seeking the contract services he offers.

Erik and his partner did an amazing job with our mosaic tile backsplash. They answered my many questions, helped us understand the process, and stayed true to the scope and length of the project. They were in and out in two days time. They respected our home and kept everything neat and tidy, and most importantly it looks great! Can not recommend them more!

Mike was hired to install Pergo Outlast flooring in my living room and dining room. This gentleman and his assistant arrived timely and were prepared to get busy. No time was wasted. Before they began Mike discussed in detail my expectations and appeared very conscientious and it was obvious he was eager to accommodate my needs. Mike had informed me prior to the installation date that the job would require possibly 6 hours. The job and clean up was actually completed in 5 1/2 hours. The clean up process was fantastic. Both men were very friendly as well as professional. They were highly skilled and the quality of work was simply sensational. I highly recommend Caporali Floors to anyone who is need of any type of wood flooring being installed. I'm confident you will be impressed with the outcome. The overall professionalism, the quality, and the value was simply UNTOUCHABLE. I look forward to using their services in the future. Thank you Caporali Floors for the beautiful craftmanship.

Can't say enough about Crompton Customs and owner Jeep. We were in a bind because we had flooring that needed placed over tile and needed someone to complete the job. Jeep came in with such a good quote and offered to come in that week. He came in on Tuesday to look at the job and completed the 3 day job in 2.5 days. There was furniture that needed moved and he did not charge us for this unforseen work. He not only completed the job that was planned, but he also added trim to areas that did not have it before. His custom work is amazing. He completed laminate flooring placement in 4 rooms, 3 closets and the work was so amazing. And Jeep himself is so kind will make sure that you are satisfied before the job is completed. Just an amazing company and will recommend to anyone.

James is very professional and did an amazing job installing both my hard wood floors and travertine. His charges are very reasonable and he always showed up on time and cleaned up afterwards. He is willing to go the extra mile to help his customers. He works a full time job and yet was willing to give up his weekends to work on any project I needed to get my house ready to sell. The quality of his work is outstanding. I highly recommend hiring James for your flooring project.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

    • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
      • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
    • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
      • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
    • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
      • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
    • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
      • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
    • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
      • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
      • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
      • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
        • Includes removal of the dura rock.
    • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

    • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
      • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
    • 620 square feet of maple floor:
      • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
      • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
        • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
