Tony is magnificent at his profession. He has done what no others has attempted to do. I have an older boiler that basically has two wires and no common wire. There was this wifi thermostat that I have been trying to install for years now. I have inquired about getting it install from a few HVAC personnel and they have not been helpful. Tony is very resourceful, meticulous and studious. He has put all other HVAC pros to shame. He is a consummate pro who never gives up and research issues until they get resolved. I appreciate his service a lot. My wifi thermostat is now working. For this reason, I give the highest recommendation for him.

I would recommend Bill's services for anyone looking for the following traits in a contractor: - Integrity - Experienced and knowledgeable - Reliable (early and always shows up to job site) - Superior communication skills (responds quickly, expectations are understood by both parties through detailed quotes) - Flexible After interviewing numerous contractors who didn't seem trustworthy, lacked experience, or overpriced their quotes, I found Bill. He was a breath of fresh air who helped bring my vision to life for a bathroom renovation. I was so happy with his work and how dedicated his crew was to completing the job in a timely manner that I decided to contract him to do a bigger project- my kitchen. Once again, I was pleased with the work and would recommend A.D.A.D. construction to anyone who wants to bypass the headache that renovations can bring.

I hired Thomas to do a floor to ceiling custom built in with a window seat. I had provided incorrect measurements originally but he did an onsite visit prior to beginning his work and was able to adjust all measurements accordingly and make a gorgeous built in piece of furniture. We realized that he was more adept to handle many of our projects that we had hired other contractors do so we hired him to do additional work and to redo some work that had already been done. He stuck to the schedule that we set forth, was great at communicating, was extremely helpful at assessing situations and providing recommendations. We are very grateful and appreciative for the work that he did on the built in, our cabinet installation our vinyl floor installation, and many other small things around the house! Thanks to Thomas many aspects of our home will be wonderful. If you would like a verbal testimony please feel free to ask Thomas for my number. Once everything is done I hope to come back and add some more photos.

Glenn has seriously turned out to be the absolute best contractor that I have ever worked with! Ive had the opportunity to work with several others, both at my homes and at my businesses. A few contractors have been good, doing nice work for a fair price, but they were either too slow, too unreliable, or just couldn’t come up with creative ways to do things that were needed. Glenn completely remodeled a new salon for me, and built a custom color bar shelf, front desk, reclaimed beam stylist counter, and retail shelves. He worked with my budget, helping me make decisions based on the priorities, and was extremely friendly, professional, and reliable every step of the way. He went above and beyond, even facetiming with me or communicating with my husband when I was under the weather and couldn’t make it to the job site. I highly recommend him for any project, and will be using his services for every future project that I have, both in business and my home.

I hired Kevin to help do some wiring, framing, and drywall so I would be able to mount a tv in a difficult location. He was very knowledgeable and was able to find some creative ways to get around a few unexpected problems he encountered once the wall was opened up. Another contractor I had come to look at the project told me it was no possible and left but now the job is done and my tv looks great with no wires showing.

We were very happy with Tom. He was the only contractor that responded to us after calling 5 contractors. He repaired a crumbled step in 90 degree weather and did a great job. Would highly recommend.

The glowing reviews that Rory Richard has received are no exaggeration. Rory just completed a job painting a double vanity and bathroom cabinet for me and I couldn’t be happier with the result. Rory is fantastic! He is prompt, neat, hard-working, and his pricing is very reasonable. Most importantly, Rory is a perfectionist who does meticulous work. It is rare in today’s world to find somebody this conscientious. I highly recommend this contractor.

Joe was amazing! First of all, he responded to my request right away to replace my kitchen faucet. I was very impressed by his knowledge and professionalism. Then, I was surprised by how quickly he was able to do the work. He would have come later on the same day, but I was not available so we scheduled it for the following day in the morning. He arrived promptly at the time we set up and he came prepared to complete the job with the new kitchen faucet that I selected in hand. He was very courteous and friendly and I was able to tell that he takes great pride in his workmanship. If you want quality work done at a very reasonable price, I highly recommend him and I will utilize his services from now on. It is very rare these days to find a contractor that is responsive and cares about the quality of his work.

Lenny is amazing! He's a total professional. I'm a designer and hired him from Thumbtack. He helped me on installation day with hanging art, putting together furniture... he even fixed a mistake that the electrician made! Both my client and I were so happy with Lenny, his work, and his attention to detail. I hired him again for another client's installation! I highly recommend Lenny from Dream Garage Remodeling!

We needed some trim work done to cover a settlement crack along a tray ceiling that I had not been able to repair. I posted the request on Thumbtack and got a few replies with hourly rates. I contacted a couple of the contractors because I wanted to get more than an hourly cost to do the work. I described the scope of the work to each contractor and said that I wanted to get a more concrete estimate. Joe Valentino of Valentino Construction and Design estimated the job would take about 3 hours to do. I agreed on the hourly rate, and I told him I would get the material and prime and paint the wood to be ready for him. We agreed on a date. Due to circumstances beyond our control that both Joe and I had, the work got delayed by about a month. Finally, a date was set. Joe said he would get the wood and prime it. I agreed. Joe and his helper showed up at the appointed time and got to work. They were meticulous in their work. Furniture was covered or moved and tarps were laid over the carpeting. Four hours later the work was done. Beautifully, I may add. The trim work was done and Joe had even given it a couple of coats of paint to finish it. Both my wife and I loved it. They cleaned up and vacuumed the carpets. Furniture was put back in place. I asked Joe what the cost would be. He told me that we had agreed to the three hours of labor and the cost of materials so that would be it. Fantastic I thought; a man of his word. I would highly recommend Valentino Construction and Design to anyone needing carpentry work. They are friendly, do great work and are reasonable with their pricing. I give them 5 stars!

Unbenonced to me at the time the previous contractors work was less then commendable. Joseph and his crew came into my home treated me with dignity and respect corrected the other contractors mistakes and gave me an awesome price. Now that my drywall is hung I have hired them to comple the painting and put down my new floor I'm sure it will be spectacular. I look forward to sharing the total transformation of my new living area with you thanks to Joseph of STP and Home Decor

Will's Home Remodeling was the general contractor for my major residential renovation at 183Jordan Road in Somers Point NJ. The project took about 4 months to complete where we completely gutted and renovated this badly damaged home that sat vacant for over 5 years. This was a $100k+ renovation for total labor and materials and Will and his team were the glue that kept the project on track and within budget. Will and his team personally completed all new vinyl siding, all new windows, new roofing, new gutters, new insulation, several new walls, stucco and cement repair, new stair steps, bathroom and shower and back splash and accent tile work, kitchen cabinet installation, wall board, spackling, caulking, trim work, door frames, shower doors and many miscellaneous requests. Will partnered well with some challenging subcontractors in the areas of plumbing, electrical, outside concrete, flooring and granite counter top installation. When the other subcontractors dropped the ball, Will was always there with a creative solution and to help get them back on task. I would definitely hire Wills Home Remodeling for my next project.

Not only did I receive a quote quickly, but all the responses to my questions came fast as well. At the end of the job, the last step requires you to go back through the following 7 steps to add something optional that would improve the integrity of my gazebo. Without hesitation, he went back all 7 steps and did the job to perfection. Many contractors would have thrown away the parts, collected their money and left. Not here! I will recommend to Family and friends and hope I can find another project to leverage them. Thanks again!

It was an absolute pleasure working with Peter my wife and I are extremely happy that we hired him. He was on time every day and even stayed late every day till the work was done. He stayed within our timeframe. It was an absolute pleasure working with Peter my wife and I are extremely happy that we hired him. He was on time every day and even stayed late every day till the work was done. He stayed with in our timeframe. We have had a lot of contractors work on our house and not one of them cleaned up after themselves I have to say he left the worksite spotless every day and checked in with us at least every other day to make sure everything looked OK. We will absolutely hire Peter again and we have already recommended him to many people who have already booked him after seeing the work that he has done.

You might have heard of the project management triangle in business school. A simplied version of it which I generally refer to when hiring contractors is the good, fast, cheap triangle - where you can only pick two sides. So if a contractor is good and fast, he’s not going to be cheap - or if he’s fast and cheap, he’s not going to be good, etc. J Federline Construction has proven themselves to be the exception to that rule. They came in and did a great job, quickly and on a very reasonable budget. I couldn’t be happier and plan on using them again for various projects around the house.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do construction project managers do?

Construction project managers help in all stages of your construction project, starting from the very first step. Typically paid a percentage of a total project cost, they are part of the design and planning process and help ensure seamless communication between the design parties and the construction team. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, their scope of work includes preparing cost estimates, budgets and work timetables; interpreting and explaining contracts and technical information to other professionals; reporting work progress and budget to clients; collaborating with architects, engineers and other construction pros; selecting subcontractors and scheduling and coordinating their tasks; responding to work delays, emergencies and other problems; and ensuring compliance with legal requirements, building and safety codes, and other regulations.

The work of construction project managers may seem very similar to that of general contractors, but there are some critical differences. One difference is that, unlike most general contractors, project managers are not engaged in the actual construction — they are onsite overseeing the work of subcontractors. Another key difference is that project managers are hired during the design phase, while general contractors are hired after plans have been made. The project manager is generally paid a percentage of the total project cost, while the general contractor is more typically paid according to the bid they gave to build your project.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

How do I find out if a contractor is licensed?

It’s important to know if your project requires work by a licensed professional, as licensing laws can vary by state, locality, and job details. You can find general licensing information online at the government websites that handle occupational licensing for a given profession in your state or location. Some states designate a project cost over which you have to hire a licensed contractor. To find qualified licensed contractors, search your state’s licensing board. For example, in California, the Department of Consumer Affairs operates a searchable database through the Contractors State License Board. In some states, contracting licenses are provided at a regional level. You can find links to specific databases on BRB Publications’ Occupational Licensing page. Red flags that a contractor may not be licensed or may be providing an expired or false license number are unreasonably low bids or a request for complete payment upfront. How much does a project manager charge per hour?

You may choose to hire a construction project manager for your residential or commercial project. For the hands-on homeowner who wants to be involved in home construction but isn’t comfortable hiring subcontractors, a construction project manager can oversee these relationships and supervise labor. Typically, construction project managers charge a fee that is a flat percentage of the total construction project cost. This may range from 10 percent to 15 percent, depending on the company and the services they provide. This means a $30,000 home remodel project would have a construction project management fee of $3,000-$4,500. Hiring a construction project manager generally precludes the markup on subcontractor labor charged by a general contractor. The drawback to this choice is that, unlike a general contractor, the construction project manager won’t be financially responsible for the work of the subcontractors. For larger projects, you may hire a construction project manager who will also hire a general contractor. This provides the benefits of the general contractor along with the management services of the project manager, who will be on board from the beginning. The construction project manager will be involved in the design phase and work with the architects and the building crew, facilitating a smoother overall process.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
